November 2022 Update Dominican Starfish Foundation

4. We personally invited friends all over North
America to join us on Giving Tuesday by doing
small fundraising projects with their families,
co-workers and friends.
We set a big goal to raise $15000 USD for
Patrick, Vana and family to have a home.
They have been on our waiting list for 8
years. Recently members of their church
congregation bought them land.
We launched the fundraising site on
November 7th so that people could work
toward giving Tuesday on November 29th.
5. Bob has 56 years of
experience in marketing and
joined our marketing team
as a volunteer to help us.
After we each sent out
personal invitations to
friends, he helped us launch
an email campaign to our
large list that we had
collected of previous
donors!!
One person who received an email
sent a donation for $7000. In trying
to discover who she was, we learned
that she had met some of us at
church in the Dominican Republic in
2020 just before Covid. She went
with us that afternoon to help
distribute food packs and had never
forgotten the impact!!
6. As November 29th Giving Tuesday drew near, we realized
that because of the tremendous support of our donors, we
were going to surpass our goal of raising funds for Patrick
and Vana to have their home! On November 28th, with
only one day to go, we launched the fundraiser for a
second home for Jackson and Dinora and family.
5 years ago, the family traveled to
the South of the Dominican Republic
(about 7 hours away) to visit
relatives. They found the children
had been abandoned and alone for
about a week. They brought them
back to Puerto Plata with them and
have cared for them ever since as
their own. The youngest was just a
baby at the time.
7. With matching funds from generous donors, a successful
email campaign, small fundraisers around the country
and a very successful Facebook auction in Southern
Alberta, we were able to raise money for both homes to
be built!! (Money for Jackson and Dinoraâs family was
raised in 24 hours).
8. So many donors and bidders in our auction help to make it phenomenal!!
Our biggest item donated, was a trip to Hawaii from Show Home Furniture in
Calgary. That alone, brought in $2500. A big shout out to everyone who
donated items and services and to all the bidders!!
9. Because of all the support, we were also able to match the
Giving Tuesday donations for the Youth Upliftment Schoolâs
funding drive for their hot lunch program. In collaboration with
their efforts and ours, $5500 was raised that day to help feed
the hungry students each day in their school!
10. Our Master of Construction, Miguel Gonell who works with
Fernando built a beautiful giant counter for the kitchen at the
school.
11. We received photos of a few of the fundraisers done around the country.
Savanna Chan,
supported by
her whole
family from
Magrath
Alberta, made
and sold
donuts on
Giving Tuesday!
Katherine Tanner, skilled artist from Snowflake,
Arizona created these gorgeous pieces of art,
auctioned them and donated the proceeds to
Dominican Starfish Foundation for our Giving
Tuesday projects!!
Maurine Laing is renowned in Cardston
Alberta for her delicious baking! She spent
countless hours over the oven and online to
raise funds to help with our projects!
THANKS TO THESE AND MANY MORE!!
12. One of the five mandates in our charity is Health and Wellness.
One way that we serve is with emergency medical assistance.
We were able to help the Miese family pay medical expenses to
provide treatment for their little 3-year-old who was burned.
Thanks to all the generous donors who helped with this.
13. While in the Dominican we met Lan,
Rocio and family. Funds for their home
were donated through Dominican
Starfish Foundation by Save the World
Foundation directed by Tamara
Fackrell. Construction on their home
began in October. The family will be
moving in next week.

14. While in the Dominican Republic in October, Valora
Palmer from Maryland met Angelo Santana at church
on Sunday. After learning about the living conditions
of his family, the next morning at breakfast she asked
if she could go home and raise funds for the family to
have a home. âOf Course!â The home was started on
November 11. It will be finished during the month of
December. We love our home sponsors!!
15. It is truly a blessing when we find someone to
sponsor a home for a family. This was the case
with Roxane and Walt Quaranta from North
Carolina. After attending the opening of one
of our homes, they spoke with Amarilis about
our home-building projects. They offered to
help this family with 4 little children to have a
home. Their middle children are twins. The 6
of them share one bedroom. The home was
started on November 19th.
16. Adonis works at the Lifestyle
Resort as a security guard. He
makes less than $200 a month.
They have a little girl and just had
a new baby girl November 5.
They live in a very difficult
situation. They are so poor. His
wife lives with her mother, and
he lives with his mother because
neither place has room for both
of them.
The house is in a very
tight spot, but it is all
the land that they
own.
Construction started
November 5. The family
should be in their home
by about December 10.
17.
18. Thanks to Tracey Messick and her friends and family from Maryland for
taking time out of their vacation to deliver food packs in the community
of Javillar. Their donation of food and time is so appreciated!
19. Jose Vasquez is an invaluable addition to our team in the
Dominican Republic. In these photos he was delivering shoes
and baby packs in a community beyond our distribution center.
20. At this point, we donât
have any extraordinary
plans for December. We
will be feeding families
for Christmas and
sponsor a toy drive for
the children. But you
never know what
miracle may lie around
the corner.
THANKS TO OUR
AMAZING
SUPPORTERS!!
