Dominican Starfish Foundation Overview
1.
2.
3. We created a Home Building Club where people donate monthly to help our on-going projects.
You can join for as little as $10 per month on our website. It’s making a huge difference!
4.
5. Included here are before-and-after photos of the 22 homes
built by Dominican Starfish Foundation in 2021.
In addition to these homes:
• We helped 16 families to remodel or finish the homes
that they had started.
• We helped 2 families save their homes from foreclosure
to creditors.
• We purchased 5 homes for families.
• We are currently building 4 homes.
• We are raising funds for an additional 3 homes.
This makes a total of 50 homes we have assisted with in
2021.

8. Lisette’s home was started in
December 2020 and presented to
her, her husband and son on
February 18, 2021. Her old home
was a disaster waiting to happen.
At any day it could have fallen.
Thank you to all our donors and
to our construction workers for
making this project happen.
9. Margarito and Maribel and their three children
lived in a challenging situation in the Dominican
Republic. They saved for many years to buy a little
home, but it was a disaster. It wasn't built
properly, and the land was slipping away making
the home badly tilted. It was scary to walk inside
the home.
March 25, the Rodriguez family were able to move
into their beautiful new home! Thank you to the
Fackrell family for this blessing!
10. Early in February we met Glenys. She has 2 children, had been
living in an abusive situation and was being evicted because she
couldn’t pay the rent. The situation was extreme and urgent.
On Valentine’s Day we posted a fundraiser and thanks to
generous donors were able in just 2 days to raise most of the
funds needed for a home. The excavation starting the very next
day. The beautiful little home was completed in March of 2021.
Thanks to everyone who helped so quickly!!
11.
12. Yrna had a job as a housekeeper at a resort before the pandemic. She is in ill health. Last
December she had a heart attack. Despite the challenges, she still keeps a smile on her face.
During the pandemic, Dominican Starfish Foundation helped her with medication and food until
she started work again.
Yrna, her husband, their son, and her father lived in a falling-down shack in the Dominican
Republic. We thought we could repair to the home but when we took the engineer and master
carpenter there, they informed us that we would be wasting our money to try to repair a home
with a bad foundation.
We started raising money in December of 2020 to rebuild. Sadly, her father died on Christmas
day. We had to remove a huge hill and build a giant retaining wall. The construction was very
complicated, but she was finally able to move into the home in June 2021.
13. Thank you to Hope Humanitarian who partnered with
Dominican Starfish Foundation to build a much-needed new
home for the Agramonte family. Dominga had a small job at a
flea market to help feed her family, but Covid shut down many
things leaving her unemployed. She cares for an aging mother.
The home is definitely a blessing!! They received their new
home in June 2021.
14. Lislibeth is a very young single
mother with 3 small children. Her
living conditions were so sad.
Thanks to generous donors, we
were able to build her a new
home. She moved in during June
of 2021.
15. This tiny 350 sq. ft. home was built for a family who lived in great poverty
with their two children. Though it is small, it is a great blessing. It has 2
bedrooms, a kitchen/living room and a bathroom. Thanks for the donors
who made this possible!! They received their home in July of 2021.
16. Rigo has worked for our
foundation since we
started building homes in
2013. He is one of our
most conscientious and
dedicated employees. He
didn’t own a home of his
own but lived in a rental
that was being sold.
In July he was able to
move into his very own
beautiful home with his
wife and children. Thank
you to the donors who
made this possible.
17. When we met Angelina and
Jeyson, they were living in a
small rented home. They had
been working for months
toward building a home of
their own, but Covid had left
them without jobs.
We were able to raise the
funds through generous
donors and help them to have
a new home.
18. The Cruz family was presented with their new home in July 2021. The Mayor of
Imbert as well as two local foundations presented plaques and expressed
appreciation for the work of our foundation!
2 sisters with 5 children between them lived
in this falling-down shack. Jack and Louise
ZoBell raised ½ of the funds for this for their
50th wedding anniversary. The Perenik
family from Massachusetts donated the
other ½ of the funds. Thanks to every
donor. The family is truly blessed!!
19. This is the home we raised money for, for Mother's Day. The Jimenez
family received their new home August 28th . Thanks to all our generous
donors and our amazing team of construction workers!
The Jimenez family lived in a shack no taller than their heads. It was
about 120 sq feet. They have 3 children. Two have special needs. The
oldest is deaf and mute and the baby has mental and physical
limitations. Caring for their family is definitely a challenge.
20. Alberto and his two children all have brittle bone disease.
Medications and treatments are expensive. The family
saved for a long time to purchase land to build a home.
Then they were faced with the medical problems of their
children and have never been able to do this. To
compound the problem, the pandemic has left the family
with no income and rent payments have become
impossible. Thanks to many kind donors we were able to
provide them with a beautiful new home!!
September 2021
21. When we met Yubelkes, her husband and six
children, they were living in deplorable conditions.
They are now enjoying a beautiful new home with
3 bedrooms. It is hard to get a good photo
because it is tucked into a small space. Thanks to
generous donors!!!
22. Miguel and Elizabeth have 6
children. They live in dire
circumstance. Miguel has a small
job as a fisherman but was unable
to pay the rent and feed the
family as well. They were all
sleeping in one bedroom in their
rented place. They moved into
their new beautiful 3-bedroom
home in November of 2021.
23. Benito and his sister’s family were both
trying to make their homes from sticks.
Thanks to a generous donor, we were able
to build them a beautiful new duplex.
They moved in on November 27, 2021.
26. This is an example
of a home make
over. This home
wasn’t completely
demolished but
rebuilt. This is for a
little family with
mom and dad and
two daughters.
27. We have 25 families sponsored who receive food 2-4 times each month.
These families are in San Rafael de Yuma, Llanos de Perez, Imbert, Javillar,
Maggiolo and more. Thanks to our donors for blessing lives!
FOOD AND CLOTHING
28. Thank you to our donors who support
families to have food every month. It is
so needed. We continue distributing
food in San Rafael de Yuma, Llanos de
Perez, Baraguana, Javillar and more.
29. 15 volunteers from Hope Humanitarian of
Utah joined with Dominican Starfish
Foundation to deliver 100 food packs in the
impoverished community of La Chocolatera.
They also delivered 150 hand made dolls
from the organization “Dolls of Hope”.
30. Food—World Hunger Day
On May 28, for World Hunger Day, we reached
out requesting funds to help feed the hungry.
Thanks to generous donors, we were able to raise
$4000 for immediate and future hunger issues.
31. The Fackrell and Sala families donated and delivered 75 large food packs to hungry
families in the community of Javillar. Even the little 2-year-old passed out candy.
32. The group from Inspire Music donated
and delivered 170 food packs to
hungry families in the community of
Maggiolo and beyond.
33.
34. Because of generous donations, we were able to distribute 100 food packs to hungry
families in the community of Munoz with funds we raised for World Food Day.
35. On October 21st 8 families lost their homes to fire in Puerto Plata. Dominican Starfish
Foundation immediately went into action. We sent $1000 and then started a fundraiser to
raise it. (A little backward but a crisis situation). Gratefully we raised that and much more.
36. Our team volunteer, Clarens went immediately to the area and purchased food for the
families. With out donations,
purchased school
supplies and uniforms
so that the children
could return to school.
We found 8 sponsors for
the 8 families affected so
that they could pay rent
for 2 months in a new
place. We helped people
replace small businesses.
We also bought beds and
stoves as people lost
everything!!
37. We delivered hundreds of pounds of household items to the 8
families who lost their homes in the October fire in Padre de Granero.
38. Chad and Tonya Greiner also took
clothing to some of the Haitian
communities as well as provided
food for every family in the
community of Baraguana.
39. We also delivered
food packs to the
whole community
of La Chocolatera.
There are 72 +
families living
there in the
framework of an
old chocolate
factory.
41. Amarilis hosted our
annual senior’s Christmas
party, complete with
delicious food, prizes,
gifts, dancing and more.
There were 120 people in
attendance at our
beautiful Starfish Center
in Javillar.
42. In the community of
Baraguana, Clarens
hosted a Christmas
party for 60
children. They had
food, activities and
gifts. Everyone
loved it!!
43. Christmas gifts
and hampers
were delivered
to families in
the community
of Llanos de
Perez and
beyond.
Thank you to
Alise and Raul
44. Donations of clothing,
shoes, hygiene kits, school
supplies, sheets, toys,
household items and more
finally arrived again with
travelers from Canada.
45. The Fackrell family
brought and
delivered hundreds
of pounds of clothing
donations in the
community of
Javillar.
46. HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
As part of our mandate, we continued to assist many who needed emergency
and continuing medical assistance. This year we helped raise funds for a spinal
surgery, a hernia surgery, broken limb repairs, cancer treatments, diabetic
complications, COVID-19 hospitalizations and medications and several other
medical procedures and treatments.
47. With donations through our foundation, we
were able to raise funds to help two young
people have surgeries. The young man in the
photo had surgery to reconnect some
intestinal problems. He was wearing diapers.
Jovanna (pictured below) is having surgery to
correct scoliosis problems with her spine.
48. We would like to give a big shout out to Dr Twede (Dermatologist) and
Dr. Davis (ENT) from Colorado for donating some amazing professional
service in our Starfish Center on March 22-23. Over 200 people came
for appointments. Thanks to so many volunteers who helped make this
event a success! The doctors and their wives and teenage children also
purchased and delivered food packs in the community.
49. We hosted our
first-ever
humanitarian
Chiropractic clinic
at our Starfish
Center in Javillar.
We had Dr. Eric
McEntire and his
wife Tagen (who
helped people
with doTerra
essential oils)
from Utah, Dr.
Allison Bremner
from Colorado,
and Kevin
Castroreyes, Luca
O’Brien and
Granger Brown,
chiropractic
students from
Florida.
50. We are pleased and happy
that Clarens, one of our
volunteers who has received
help from the foundation with
his medical schooling and
home is paying it forward in
his community. He organized
a medical operative to help
the people in Baraguana. He
is doing great work!
51. Clarens who is one of our main volunteers living in Baraguana hosted 10 Dominican dentists
from Santo Domingo. They slept on the floor of his home. I was so impressed that
Dominican dentists were serving in a Haitian community!! It was great that Clarens could
host in the home that we built for him last year.
52. In December, we were able to raise
funds for baby Mya (left) to have a
much-needed hernia surgery.
Amy (right) is 5. She was
diagnosed with Leukemia at age 3.
She has fought a valiant battle.
We recently helped the family
again with medical treatments.
This young single mom has 5
children. She was in a terrible
motor-bike accident on her
way home from work
recently. We have helped
with food and medication.
We really hope her leg will
heal and that she won’t have
to have it amputated.
53. In January, one of our dedicated
crews was able to complete the
security wall around the school we
purchased for Youth Upliftment
International. This will be a blessing
for the children and help keep them
safe.
54. Thanks to gracious
donors, in addition to
English classes, we were
able to start a pedicure
and manicure course to
help the women of
Baraguana become
more self-sufficient.
55. As we expand our mandate to
help others to help themselves,
through sponsorship from our
donors, 15 women in Baraguana
are finishing a pedicure and
manicure course. A hairdressing
course has now been sponsored
and added to the program.
Some of the participants are
already earning income in the
community.
56. Our first group graduated from the
Manicure/Pedicure Course and the
Hairdressing Course that was held in
Baraguana. Some graduates have already
found limited income opportunities.
57. We hosted a graduation
ceremony for the graduates of
the hair-dressing and nail
courses that were sponsored
and taught in the community of
Baraguana. It was amazing to
see them dressed up in their
very best when they live in such
squalor. It was a very special
day for them.
58. June 1-30, Jake and Tamara Fackrell and their
family from Utah spent an entire month dedicated
to humanitarian work in the Dominican Republic
They arrived with 14 suitcases filled with
humanitarian items that they had collected.
Tamara and her mother, Mary Ashworth wrote a
beginning piano book and got it translated into
Spanish. They made 100 copies to take with them.
59. We are thrilled to announce the opening
of the new Flamingo English School in
Llanos de Perez sponsored by Dominican
Starfish Foundation. Our teacher is Alise.
She is so excited about this program.
There are 16 students initially! We would
like to thank the donors who have made
this school possible--helping to change
lives one at a time!!
60. In November, we visited the
Flamingo English School and
delivered gifts from the children in
the Warner, Alberta School. The
children were so excited!!
Thanks to
our teacher,
Alise, our
sponsors of
this program
and the
Warner
School!!
61. Thanks to Candice
Hiers, Clarens was able
to purchase $600 worth
of school supplies for
the community of
Baraguana. This is a
huge help to these
families.
62. This cute photo of one of our worker’s
children who we provided with a school
uniform, started a flood of requests for help.
Children in the Dominican aren’t allowed to
attend school without a uniform and many
families can’t afford to buy them.
Fortunately, it also started a flood of donors,
eager to help with the cause of education!
63. Our school uniform campaign
was very well supported. We
were able to help in the
communities of Javillar,
Baraguana, Munoz, Loma
Blanca, La Grua, Perez, Barrio
Angela, La Seiba and more.
Over 200 children were blessed
to be able to attend school
because of this!
64. A group of our supporters donated school
supplies for 100 children at our center in
Javillar! Thank you to Tamara Fackrell, Nancy
Gutierrez and all involved!!
66. We have more than 50 students
sponsored in the Youth Upliftment
School and are currently helping to
raise funds so that they can start their
hot lunch program in the school for the
hungry children who attend there.
68. Without our amazing team, we would
be nothing!! Again in 2021, Amarilis
and Fernando hosted a Christmas
party for our workers complete with
delicious food, prizes, Christmas
bonuses and more. Over 60 people
were in attendance. THANKS TO ALL!!
EMPLOYMENT
70. September our crews
finished the
construction on our
Starfish Center. Thanks
to all the workers who
have made this possible.
Thank you to the
donors.
Especially thanks to
doTerra Healing Hands
who matched $15000
US from what we raised
at our auction last year.
Also thank you to Gay
Lee Foundation for
donating $10000 to help
with this.

71. The Fackrell family made a major donation to
our ongoing playground project. Finally, we
have the first equipment with more to come!
They also did an amazing job of painting the
fence around the property. The paint and so
many hours were donated to this project! A
special thanks also to Lease and Mya Sala for
the many hours they spent painting the
playground, helping with homes and more.
72.
73. The Inspire Music group helped clean the playground and pour the cement for the
swings and teeter totters. They also left donations to add a gazebo to our park.
74. By November we saw many advancements at our playground in Javillar.
78. To many young men in the
Dominican Republic, baseball is
their life and their dream to
leave their poverty behind in
the future! The Dominican
Republic has more players in
the major leagues than any
other country.
Many times, when we have
visited, we have brought
donations of uniforms and
baseball equipment for the
children's leagues here.
Amarilis received a message
from Jose Tatis who is the
director of one of the Little
League baseball teams here.
We have supplied donations of
uniforms and baseball
equipment to his teams many
times in the past.
One of the young people
who grew up playing in his
league, Erik Gonzalez who
plays for the Pittsburg
Pirates flew his former
Little League coach, Jose to
the USA to watch one of his
games. Jose sent pictures
and asked for our
continued help for his
teams.
79. 150 baseball hats, lots of uniforms, baseballs,
bats and gloves were delivered to teams in
Puerto Plata. Thanks to Eric Allen for collecting
these donations and for Wade Payne and Mike
Christensen for hauling them on the plane to
the Dominican Republic. Thanks also to
Fernando and Jose for assisting with the
distribution. There were many, many happy
children!!!
80. Our foundation slogan is:
“Made a Difference to That One”
(from the famous Starfish Story)
In 2021, with the help of hundreds of volunteers
and donors, we have been able to make a
difference to thousands of Dominican people
who suffer in poverty.
These pages only contain a portion of the activities
of the foundation during the past year. THANK YOU!
