Working Title:
When the sun Goes Down by Arctic Monkeys
Audience:
My target age range is young adults and teens. This is because the song highly relates to them, as
the message conveyed is a very youth based idea as it happens to many different young adults
and teens all over the country. Although the idea portrayed in the song does happen to older
generations, it is not as common with them as it is in the newer generations. My audience will also
include both genders as both genders can be mistreated by their opposite partner whilst in a
relationship. This is relevant as the songs message is all about being mistreated by the opposite
sex. The story conveyed in the song relates to all classes, as any relationship in any social class
can be abusive therefore; the videos social status audience will be anyone. However,
stereotypically abuse in lower class relationships occurs more than higher-class relationships
meaning that the song may appeal to the lower class more. As well as that, the way the music
video will be shot and editing will make it look quite low class and not as professional as other
music videos with a high budget and positive message. This is because I want the video to look
relatable and realistic whereas if it was made very professionally it would look fake and people
wouldnât believe the message as much. The song will appeal to people who have experienced
abusive relationships, as they will be able to relate to the song and get another perspective on
what they have experienced.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
Over the course so far, I have acquired and picked up many different skills. Firstly, I have
massively improved my editing skills. This has happened through using better editing software as
we have used premier pro and I have learnt more complex effects and editing techniques I can use
whilst in the software. This will help me out during the course as most of the different projects that
we do involve some sort of editing and my newly acquired skills will highly benefit me. I have also
improved my Photoshop skills, as before the course they were very weak. I can do all the basics in
Photoshop effectively and can use some complex effects and tools to a decent standard. This will
benefit me in all future projects, as Photoshop is a very useful tool in any role in media as it allows
you to edit images how you want. This can be used in adverts, videos and print. As well as that,
my knowledge and camera skills have improved through using cameras for my irn bru and music
video projects. During these projects, I have had to set up and effectively use professional
cameras and various different types of kit. This has allowed me to get a good understanding of
cameras and how to shoot different shots to portray different themes and tones. This will benefit
me in the far future as directing and filmmaking is a possible career path for me therefore all these
little skills and techniques I am picking up will benefit me at point.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
I am making a music video for the When the Sun Goes Down by the Arctic Monkeys. In the video I
am going to tell the story of the song by portraying the lyrics on screen. I am going to film in public
places. This is so the music video looks realistic and so that the audience can relate to it as the
message of the song occurs regularly around the world especially in average working class areas
hence why I am going to film there. As well as that, I am going to try and film in a sort eerie lighting
as the message being portrayed is not positive one therefore I want what the audience see to
reflect that. Whilst editing post filming I will also add many effects and editing techniques to the
video to make it convey the tone of the song as effectively as possible. The effects and editing
techniques will also add an element of professionalism to the music video therefore making it look
more cinematic and appealing to the eye. In my video, I am going to include many different types
of shots including close shots. I am going to include close shots when the lyrics stare about the
characters involved in the song. This is so the audience know exactly who the lyrics are talking
about and so they get a good understanding of the video. For research on my music video, I went
on YouTube on watched multiple different music videos. I decided to use YouTube as my research
tool as it is the easiest and most effective way to find and watch different types of music videos.

After watching a few different ones, I choose the videos that included similar features to what I
wanted include. This included songs like Pompeii by Bastille and Cocoon by catfish. I chose
Pompeii as research material as it included an errie tone which was similar to what I wanted to
include in mine. It also included very middle class places, which was similar to what location
wanted to film in. From this, I have collected different techniques I can use to create the tone to
want to convey in my video. I used cocoon as research material as it included different close shots
of the main characters. This is going to be similar to mine. The music video also tells the story of
the song, which is exactly what Iâm doing in my video.
Production Techniques (approx. 150 words)
I am going to include a range of post production effects. I am going to do this by importing my
shots into premier pro and add different effects to the footage. I will use the effect Kodak 5205 Fuji
3510. This is because it looks negative and depressing however, it adds a level of professionalism
to the video therefore making it look more cinematic. I will also change the saturation and colour
tones to make the music video look more negative. This is to try and portray the tone of the song
as best as possible.
I have decided not to use a green screen, as I want my music video to look as real as possible.
This is because the songs message is a very real and serious problem therefore I want my video
to symbolize this. As well as that, greens screen in music videos would be mainly used for lip-
syncing purposes and I am not including any lip syncing in my video. This is because I am
concentration on displaying the message of the song and I donât believe that lip-syncing is needed
for this purpose.
I have decided to use handheld shots throughout the music video. This means no steadicam will
be included. I have decided to this as I want the video to seem real and a slight movement of the
camera will convey this theme very effectively.
