Emergency Preparedness
Effective emergency planning requires that everyone at

 Be informed of what to do in case of an emergency
 Be prepared to fulfill roles & responsibilities
Today’s session provides you with information about
 What to do in an emergency building evacuation
 Where you can find more information
Types of Emergencies
Your building may be required to evacuate for:
 Fire
 Hazardous Material Spill or Release
 Bomb Threat
 Facility or Utility Failure
Evacuation Staff
Building Emergency Coordinator
 Acts as the liaison with the responding emergency service, EHS,
and others, coordinates with building/department administrators
responsible for employee, student, and visitor health and safety
Evacuation Warden
 Walks through assigned areas and assists in evacuation, reports to
the evacuation assembly point
Classroom Instructors
 Responsible for their students and following evacuation procedures
Emergency Evacuation Plan
 Know the location of your primary and secondary
exits
 Know the location of the nearest fire alarm pull
station and fire extinguisher
 Read and understand the emergency evacuation plan and
procedures
 Know the location of the common meeting area
 Practice the emergency procedures
Emergency Evacuation Procedures
IN THE EVENT OF a Fire, Bomb Threat,
Hazardous Material Spill, etc….
ACTIVATE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
LOCATED ALONG EXIT ROUTES IF THE
ALARM IS NOT SOUNDING.
Emergency Evacuation Procedures
 IF THE ALARM IS ACTIVATED EVACUATE THE BUILDING
USING THE NEAREST EXIT OR EXIT STAIRWAY. DO NOT USE
ELEVATORS.
Individuals requiring assistance should proceed to the designated
area of rescue and seek assistance from other evacuees to notify
emergency personnel of their location.
 CALL 3300 FROM A SAFE AREA and provide name, location, and
nature of emergency.
 REMAIN AT A SAFE LOCATION AT LEAST 100 FT FROM THE
BUILDING until you are told to re-enter.
Do not impede access of emergency personnel to the area.
If You Are Trapped By Fire Inside a
Building…
 Stay low if there is smoke in the area.
 Feel doors before opening - if hot to the touch, find another
avenue.
 Close doors behind you upon leaving.
 If trapped in an area, close the door, use available material
to pack under the threshold openings, and call or signal for
help.
Emergency Reporting
 Report all emergencies to the UMES Police
Department at EXT 3300
and
 Notify EHS of a fire or hazardous material spill:
Preston Cottman, EHS Manager EXT 6652
Danna Maloney, ASST. EHS Manager EXT 3040
