“Throw another shrimp on the barbie,” says the famous Australian actor,
Paul Hogan. What is he talking about? It sounds like English, but why can’t
we understand it? The reason is that it’s an example of Strine.
The colourful Australian slang developed from the English spoken in
England and Ireland more than 200 years ago. In 1788, the English sent
English and Irish prisoners to Australia because the prisons in Britain were
full. Australia was far away and the conditions were difficult, so the British
thought it was a suitable punishment for the prisoners. The prisoners came
from different social backgrounds and brought diverse accents and
vocabulary to the English language. When their children grew up, they
spoke a street slang unique to Australia and it became the Australian slang
we know today.
So if an Aussie says, “I’m bushed!” You don’t want to act like a “drongo” (a
“fool”). Just put a smile on your face and answer, “Ace mate, I’m bushed
too!” Or in other words, “Great, my friend, I’m also tired.”
