The state of the art research in the last decade shows that it is beneficial for institutions to provide their datasets as Linked Data in order to achieve easy cross-referencing, interlinking and integration. In this paper, we present the Rijksmuseum linked dataset (accessible at http://datahub.io/dataset/rijksmuseum), along with collection and vocabulary statistics, as well as lessons learned from the process of converting the collection to Linked Data. The version of March 2016 contains over 350,000 objects, including detailed descriptions and high-quality images released under a public domain license.

The maintenance of waterways is expensive. Optimization of reconstruction projects can save money and limit hindrance for the public. In this presentation I show how the implementation of Spatial OLAP can give better insight in the quality of the construction of waterway banks. By spatially overlaying inspection results with construction records, a better estimation can be made about the overall quality, potential danger and repair costs. Spatial OLAP is an excellent way to provide insight into the different variables involved in the planning proces of maintenance.

Big data visualization frameworks and applications at Kitware Marcus Hanwell, Technical Leader at Kitware, Inc. March 27th 2014 Kitware develops permissively licensed open source frameworks and applications for scientific data applications, and related areas. Some of the frameworks developed by our High Performance Computing and Visualization group address current challenges in big data visualization and analysis in a number of application domains including geospatial visualization, social media, finance, chemistry, biological (phylogenetics), and climate. The frameworks used to develop solutions in these areas will be described, along with the applications and the nature of the underlying data. These solutions focus on shared frameworks providing data storage, indexing, retrieval, client-server delivery models, server-side serial and parallel data reduction, analysis, and diagnostics. Additionally, they provide mechanisms that enable server-side or client-side rendering based on the capabilities and configuration of the system. Jo Lambert Jisc Paul Needham University of Cranfield The success of COUNTER in supporting adoption of a standard to measure e-resource usage over the past 15 years is apparent. The prevalence of global OA policies and mandates, and the role of institutional repositories within this context prompts demand for more granular metrics. It also raises the profile of data sharing of item level usage and research data metrics. The need for reliable and authoritative measures is key. This burgeoning interest is complemented by a number of initiatives to explore the measurement and tracking of usage of a broad range of objects outside traditional publisher platforms. Drawing on examples such as OpenAIRE, IRUSdata-UK, Crossref’s distributed usage logging and DOI event tracker projects, COAR Next Generation Repositories and IRUS-UK, this session will provide an update on progress in this area, discuss some challenges and current approaches to tackling them

Cloud based Smart City hubs are an attractive approach to addressing some of the complex issues faced when deploying PaaS infrastructure for Smart Cities. In this paper we introduce the general notion of IoT hubs and then discusses our work to generalize our IoT hub as a Smart City PaaS. Two key issues are identified, support for hybrid public/private cloud and interoperability. We briefly describe our approach to these issues and discuss our experiences deploying two cloud-based Smart City hubs, one in the UK and the other in Canada.

Tutorial presented at Mini Gateways 2022. Demonstrates how to build data portals and science gateways with the Django Globus Portal Framework. The broad scope of a typical science gateway—to simplify access to shared data, computing and other resources—makes building such a gateway from scratch a daunting task. Investigators must be able to stage data from instruments (or other sources), submit compute jobs to analyze data, move data to more persistent storage, describe data products, and provide a means for collaborators to search, discover, reuse and augment these data products. Myriad tools are available to enable all these tasks but integrating them in a way that hides the complexity from users, is a challenge. In this tutorial we will describe an approach that bootstraps science gateway development based on the Modern Research Data Portal[1] design pattern. The solution uses a set of open source tools that build on the established Django web framework, the ubiquitous OAuth2/OpenID connect standards for authentication/authorization, the widely deployed Globus service for research data management, and the nascent funcX functions-as-a-service platform. Attendees will learn how to rapidly deploy a science gateway that enables both automated computation at scale and data enhanced discovery of resulting data products. The emphasis will be on automating many of the required tasks so that gateway developers can focus on building differentiated, discipline-specific functionality rather than low-value—yet critical—supporting infrastructure. We will use the ALCF Community Data Co-Op as an exemplar to illustrate how these tools have been used to support large-scale collaborative research. We will describe the overall solution architecture and introduce attendees to the individual tools. Attendees will then use these tools to deploy and configure their own science gateway to support image analysis, description, indexing and search. The tutorial will comprise a mix of lectures, demonstration and hands-on exercises. Virtual machines will be provided for computation and for hosting the science gateway. The objective is for attendees to develop a high-level understanding of the various components and leave with working code that can serve as the starting point for their own science gateway implementation.
