Heathers – The Musical arrives in Canada!
“My teenage angst bullshit now has a body count.”
The 1989 revenge comedy about a socially awkward girl and loner new kid who decide to take down the beautiful
but cruel totalitarian high school clique, is now a darkly funny musical.
Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe adapted the Michael Lehmann’s cult classic film (written by Daniel Waters),
which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater into a musical that is equal parts social commentary and psycho
thriller, and its guilt free mayhem.
Director David C. Jones has assembled an exciting array of established talent and fresh new voices.
Jessie Winner Christine Quintana plays Veronica Sawyer, our misfit heroine who gets in with the wrong crowd,
while recent Studio 58 graduate Kamyar Pazandeh plays the brooding JD. The trio of terrorizing Heathers are
realized by Synthia Yusuf, Devon Busswood and Nhi Do.
Playing against type – Colin Sheen (last seen in Red Rock Diner) and Hal Wesley Rogers (Jesus in Jesus Christ Super
Star) play the brutish and dumb football bullies, while Stephanie Davis (seen in Best Laid Plans) plays one of their
victims, Martha Dunnstock.
The adults are played by producer Lori Watt (Liza in Lascivious Something) Ken Overbey (Donkey in Shrek at TUTS)
and Nelson Wong (last seen on stage in Falling In Time and making his first appearance in a musical).
The rest of the cast is: Quinn Cartwright, Daren Dyhengco, Vivian Full, Brent Hirose, Matt Montgomery and
recording artists, Deanna Rayne.
Musical director is Stephen Bulat and the design team includes Sacha Pichard (costume designer) Michael Methot
(Technical Director and Lighting Designer) and Moe Curtin (set design).
The original Mean Girls, Heathers The Musical is murderously funny with well-crafted songs and inspired comic
lyrics. Numbers range from raunchy (a doo-wop number about blue balls) to a plangent ode to fading youth
(“Seventeen”). It also deftly captures the pain and ecstasy of being a teen.
Heathers The Musical runs January 8th to 17th at The York Theatre on Commercial Drive.
Heathers is an Equity Artists Collective.
