2. RISK AND PREVENTION I
Risk ≠ hazard!!!
Different factors can increase the risk of accidents:
Human factor: Information, training and experience, behaviour,
attitude at work, clear communication between employees, line
managers and their team.
Organisation: General atmosphere. Clear job descriptions and an
efficient and safe method of working are required.
Working environment: maintenance of machinery, temperature,
humidity.
Technical elements: substances, machinery, tools.
3. RISK AND PREVENTION II
Steps to eliminate or limit risk at the workplace :
Eliminate risks
If elimination is not possible: replacement measures.
If not possible, eliminate the risk at the source.
When several people are exposed : collective protective measures.
If the risk cannot be eliminated: reduce the time of exposure.
Only when all other measures are unavailable: personal protective
equipment is used. Last resort.
Very important: communicate the risks!!!
4. BEFORE, DURING AND
AFTER WORK
Employers have to organize the work in order to avoid risks, inform the
employees and take all necessary measures.
Prevention:
• Starts with good preparation in technical aspects and job
preparation.
• Task/risk analysis: list, analyze and evaluate all the risks and
discuss what measures can be taken. Expert advise if necessary.
Take into account contractors.
• Keep up-dating if the workplace is altered, the working conditions
have changed. Record all damages.
• Real time risk assessment (RTRA): operational employees at the
workplace (by a check list).
5. BEFORE, DURING AND
AFTER WORK II
Employees:
• If a risk is detected: inform the supervisor, remind safety instructions
to co-workers
Communication measures:
• To convey employees before work begins, and preferably at the
workplace. Regular short and informal meetings.
• Risk must be communicate also to contractors and visitors.
• Other communication methods: visible signs, written evacuation
procedures, safety guidelines, training work-shops (refresher
courses) or reviewers, practical demonstration.
6. BEFORE, DURING AND
AFTER WORK III
High risk activities:
• Plan and provide the correct measures. If arrangements cannot be
kept to: stop work immediately. Specific training for operational
employees. Final evaluation.
