Microsoft – Platform View | Michael Wignall | March 2016
1. Microsoft – Platform View
Microsoft Builds Platforms and Productivity Solutions for everyone in the world
Our Partner Ecosystem AND our customers AND citizens; configure, customise, tailor, extend our
solutions to meet the specific needs of UK Local Government – can enable new business models
Key Tech Principles to support Government as a Platform – work up the stack (plumbing)
Flexibility of Infrastructure and ability to move clouds – Compute/Storage should be
commodities – standards need to support no lock-in.
Identify/Authentication common across B2C, B2B and Internal – SAML/OpenID/LDAP
Productivity/Collaboration tools should be interoperable – Doc/voice/video/IM (XMPP)
Inherit underlying platform capabilities to build “functional” platforms with Open APIs
Microsoft are transforming as a company to embrace “Openness”, for example:
In our productivity suite – O365 supported on Windows, Mac, IOS and Android, plus increased
support for ODF document standards and Open APIs for Office
In our cloud platform – Azure supports Linux, Hadoop, Mongo DB , Docker, etc.
For our developers – we are making .Net Open Source and cross-platform
