MASTER SELF HYPNOSIS
NOW!
Defining Hypnosis
● What hypnosis is
● What hypnosis isn’t
● More education=better results!
Defining Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a heightened state of suggestibility
Defining Hypnosis
According to the U.S. Government:
“Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor
of the mind and acceptance of acceptable
selective thinking.”
Defining Hypnosis
Critical, what?!
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Do you think of...
OR
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Hypnosis≠Hollywood
● Hypnosis cannot be done against your will
● ALL hypnosis is self hypnosis
● That means YOU are in control every step of the way!
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Hypnosis≠Sleep!
● A person in hypnosis is
always alert
● “Sleep” in hypnosis is not to
be taken literally
● If you are sleeping your are
not in hypnosis
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Hypnosis≠Being Weak-Willed
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Three Keys to be Hypnotized:
● Ability to follow instructions
● An active imagination
● Average intelligence
Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Other Hypnosis Myths:
● Hypnosis has ties to the occult
● Religious people should not
practice hypnosis
● You can get “stuck” in
hypnosis

Misconceptions of Hypnosis
Model of the Mind
The model of the mind is constantly changing...
However, here are the four functions of the mind:
● Conscious Mind
● Unconscious Mind
● Subconscious Mind
● Critical Factor
Conscious Mind
● What you are focusing on right now
● Not limited to focusing on the present
○ Can focus on the past, future, imagination
● Smallest part of consciousness
○ Only holds 7±2 bits of information
Conscious Mind
Name as many automobile companies as you can...go!
Conscious Mind
How did you do?
Conscious Mind
“Going back to the well”
Conscious Mind
Features of the conscious mind:
● Analytical
● Logical
● Extremely limited in size
● Protective
● Willpower
Unconscious Mind
Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936)
● Russian physiologist
● Proved the existence of the unconscious mind
● Famous for experiment with dogs
Unconscious Mind
Unconscious Mind
Unconscious Mind
The unconscious mind is an extremely active state
of consciousness
● Controls breathing
● Autonomic Nervous System
○ Controls bodily functions
● No thinking or reasoning
Unconscious Mind
The unconscious mind controls:
● Smooth muscle responses
● The presence of feelings
● Bodily functions
● Reflexes and our immune system
Subconscious Mind
The subconscious is responsible
for you as an individual
● Beliefs
● Habits
● Moods
● ...and so much more!
Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind is a limitless powerhouse
Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind is astonishingly organized
Subconscious Mind
Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind speaks to you in intuitions,
impulses, hunches, urges, etc.
Subconscious Mind
Functions of the subconscious mind include:
● Beliefs
● Habits
● Emotions
● Imagination and creativity
● Unlimited
Critical Factor
“Hypnosis is the bypass of the critical factor of
the mind and acceptance of acceptable
selective thinking.”
Critical Factor
● Critical factor is the “guard” between your
conscious and subconscious mind
● Compares new information from conscious to
old beliefs and perceptions in subconscious
● Either accepts or rejects new information
○ If accepted, weakens or reinforces habits
or beliefs in the subconscious
○ If rejected, no changes occur and the
information is stored in the unlimited
space of memory in the subconscious
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
What does hypnosis feel like?
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
We are ALL expert hypnotists
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
“Highway Hypnosis”
● The unconscious takes the
wheel
● Example of “time distortion”
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
Other examples of time distortion...
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
“Hypnotic pain relief/control”
● Hypnosis can block out pain
● A hypnotized person can numb
any part of the body
○ Numbed part can be
transferred to relieve
discomfort
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
“Negative Hallucinations”
● “Regular hallucinations”
○ Seeing something that
doesn’t exist
● “Negative hallucinations”
○ NOT seeing something
that DOES exist
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
When intentionally producing hypnosis you may also
experience these other sensations:
● Light feeling like a floating cloud
● Heavy feeling like you are a rock
● Tingling or numbness of the fingers, toes, etc.
● Changes in body temperature
● Blocking out certain sounds, or increasing your hearing
● Eyelids flickering
● Disconnection from the body
Experiences Associated with Hypnosis
Now we are going to get better at it and reap the
benefits by doing it intentionally!
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Which can be measured with an EEG machine
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
There are four different types of brain wave patterns:
● Beta
● Alpha
● Theta
● Delta
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Beta
● Normal, wakeful state of awareness
● Critical, rational and judgemental
● Resistant to new information
● 15 to 30 cycles per second
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Alpha
● Primary hypnosis state
● Internal chatter slows down
● Images and symbols dominate
● 8 to 14 cycles per second
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Theta
● Profound hypnosis state
● State of deep meditation
● Pain defying feats can occur
● 4 to 7 cycles per second
Brain Waves and the Hypnotic State
Delta
● Essentially a comatose state
● No suggestions are received
● 4 or less cycles per second
Stanford University School of Medicine Study
● Dorsal anterior cingulate less active
○ Responsible for being aware of
external environment
● Connections became stronger or
disconnected
○ Connections that became stronger:
Mind-body connection increased
○ Disconnected connections:
People became less self-conscious
Setting the Scene
Things to Remember...
● There is no “right way to go into hypnosis”
● It is possible to immediately go into self-hypnosis
○ Anytime...anywhere!
● Interruptions will occur
○ Expect it!
● Consider turning off your cell phone
● Show disruptive pets the door!
Setting the Scene
1. Make the room adequately dark
2. Lie down on a couch, bed, or yoga mat (make sure head is propped up!)
3. Grab a blanket
4. Light some incense
5. Use headphones
My Five Keys to Setting the Scene
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Effective Suggestions Contain These Qualities:
● Simple
● Specific
● Positive
● Measurable
● Believable
● Behavioral
● Present or Always Tense
● Reward
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Simple
● Potent and to the point
● Keep your suggestions short
● Complexity=weakness
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Specific
● Subconscious mind work on path of least resistance
● Subconscious will mix up your words
○ For, example, “I want to only drink no more than one can of soda a day” can become
“No, I only want to drink more than one can of soda a day.”
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Believable
● Subconscious mind can’t tell between fact or fiction
● Be reasonable with your suggestion
● Smaller suggestions that build on your ultimate goal usually work best
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Behavioral
● Either an increase or a decrease in behavior
○ An action must be taken
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Present or Always Tense
● Never craft a suggestion in past or future tense
○ “I will exercise every day for 30 minutes”
● This suggests that it hasn’t happened yet
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Positive
● Address what you DO want, not what you DON’T want!
● Eliminate negative words “not,” “no,” and “never”
● Negative words greatly affect the potency of suggestions
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Measurable
● Measurable goals make life much easier
● Suggestions can be measured in time and even space
○ For example, “Everyday Sunday I clean my entire room.”
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Reward
● Gets us excited and motivated
● Benefits=the reward
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Specific
Contains all of the qualities covered
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Example:
“I wish I could lose some belly fat because I’m tired of being overweight.”
● Not positive
● Not in present or always tense
● Not measurable
● No reward
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Write down some benefits:
“I will be able to fit into my jeans”
or
“Losing weight will make me feel empowered.”
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Example:
“Every morning when I wake up I go for a 30 minute jog, which makes me feel
energized and healthy.”
Crafting Effective Suggestions
Exercise:
Think of an issue you would like to work on and develop at
least three suggestions that pass the criteria you just
learned.
Getting in the Proper Mindset
1. Define your purpose for a session
2. Clear your mind (get your “hypnosis face” on!)
Before Inducing Hypnosis
Getting in the Proper Mindset
● Remind yourself of your purpose
before inducing hypnosis
● Defining your goal keeps you
focused
○ Being focused can still be fun
and relaxing
Defining Your Purpose
Getting in the Proper Mindset
● Only think about your goals
● Create a pre-hypnosis
ritual
● Get into a relaxed state
Clearing Your Mind
Getting in the Proper Mindset
● Listen to pleasant music
● Take a warm bath
● Aromatherapy
● ....yawning!
Tips to Assist you in the Proper Mindset
Getting in the Proper Mindset
● Self-Hypnosis is not as fragile of a
practice as meditation
● Don’t give passing thoughts energy
Finals Thoughts
Getting in the Proper Mindset
Now Go Get Your “Hypnosis Face” On!
Inducing Hypnosis
● Purpose of an induction is to
induce the hypnotic state
● Inductions come in many forms
(relaxation, surprise, fear, etc.)
● Inductions can last for hours or
seconds
Inducing Hypnosis
● Most popular self-hypnosis induction
● Utilizes mental and physical relaxation
simultaneously
● Progressive relaxation induction
contains two things:
○ Frequent use of the word “relax”
○ Suggesting that each body part relaxes
Progressive Relaxation Induction
Inducing Hypnosis
● Start out by suggesting that each time
you think the word “relax” or say it out
loud, you begin to feel it throughout your
body
● The word “relax” is your key that will
unlock any stress or discomfort
● Use the image of a “white light” to cover
your entire body
Progressive Relaxation Induction
Inducing Hypnosis
● The oldest and most classic of the
induction methods
● Instructions:
a. Focus on an object
b. Suggest that it is your only concern
c. Suggest that your eyes are becoming heavier
and want to close
● Candles and incense sticks are great to
use for this induction
Eye Fixation Induction
Inducing Hypnosis
● Utilizes double-binds
● Instructions:
a. Suggest that one hand feels lighter than the other
b. Lift lighter hand and stare at your palm
c. Suggest that there is big magnet in the center of palm
d. Suggest that there is also a magnet in the center of
your forehead
e. Allow the hand and forehead to come together
f. Close your eyes and go into hypnosis when they touch
Magnetic Induction
Inducing Hypnosis
● Post-hypnotic suggestions give us this power
○ For example, “the next time I choose to do hypnosis I
will simply say (INSERT HYPNOTIC CUE) and go right
back into this state of hypnosis or deeper.”
○ We can use these to enter hypnosis or go to sleep
○ This saves us a ton of time
Inducing Hypnosis Through Word or Phrase
Inducing Hypnosis
● There are thousands of ways to induce hypnosis
● Don’t get overwhelmed
● Find the one(s) that suit you best
● Check out the scripts in this section
Final Thoughts
Deepening
Deepening
The Two Main Types of Deepeners:
1. Counting
2. Visualization
Deepening
Deepen with Counting
● Perform a slow count of 1-10
● Suggesting each number
brings you 10% deeper into
hypnosis
● Suggest your body is relaxing
between numbers
Deepening
Deepen with Visualization
● Spiral Staircase method most popular
● Each step takes your deeper
● Usually involves a pleasant scene
● Ascending stairs may work better for
some
Deepening
Additional Deepening Techniques
1. Fractionation
2. Pyramiding of Inductions
Deepening
Fractionation
Fractionation-slightly emerging and then quickly
going back into hypnosis, resulting in a deeper
state
● ...“on the count of three I'm going to open
my eyes, then I will immediately snap my
fingers and return to this level of hypnosis,
or deeper.”
● Extremely powerful and proven technique
Deepening
Pyramiding of Inductions
Pyramiding of Inductions-doing an induction immediately
after completion of a previous one
● There is no limit to how many you can stack
● Useful technique for beginners
● After a while, most find their perfect induction
Deepening
Closing Tip
Throughout the session, you can suggest, “I easily and
effortlessly go deeper with each passing minute.”
Techniques
Techniques
Post-Hypnotic Suggestion
● Suggestion carried out by your
subconscious mind AFTER the session
● Instantly induce hypnotic state in future
session
● Used as a deepener
Techniques
Post-Hypnotic Suggestion in the Waking State
● Suggest a physical gesture to use in waking state
● For example, rubbing fingers together when you crave a
cigarette
● Other examples include:
-putting hands through your hair
-adjusting the collar on your shirt
-clenching your fist
Techniques
Direct Drive
● Works on principle of repetition
● Repeat your suggestions at least 15
times in a row
● Your subconscious mind LOVES
repetition!
Convincers
Know that you’re hypnotized!
Convincers
Eye Lock
● Most popular convincer
● “as my eyelids are pressing
together they are becoming
tighter. As I count from one to
three they will twitch and
tighten. When I get to three, I
will try to open them, but you
will NOT be able too...”
Convincers
Arm Lock
● Arm completely locked
● Suggest that your arm
is “stiff and rigid like a
bar of steel”
Convincers
Magnetic Fingers
Instructions:
1. Clasp hands together with fingers
intertwined
2. Space fingers apart
3. Each exhale makes your fingers more
connected (as if there were magnets
on the tips of your fingers)
Convincers
Heavy Arm
Instructions:
1. Determine which arm feels
heavier
2. Suggest the heavy arm
becomes even heavier
3. If it still doesn’t feel heavier,
imagine you are trying to hold a
heavy dictionary in that hand
Convincers
Final thoughts
● Customize convincers as you see fit
● Convincers also act as deepeners
● Convincers are the final piece of preparation
Emerging
Emerging
The “Not Recommended” Way
● “The cold water approach”
Emerging by saying, “Ok, emerge!”
● Not pleasant and happens too sudden
Emerging
Typical Way To Emerge
● Count of five
● “In a moment, I'm going to count from
one to five. When I get to five, I will
open my eyes and emerge. Feeling
wide awake and refreshed.”
Emerging
Follow the three R's of emerging:
● Reiterate
● Reinforce
● Rejuvenate
Emerging
Reiterate
● Recap the suggestions given during your
session
● Example, “One, I am a non-smoker and will
continue to be a non-smoker for the rest of
my life...two….
Emerging
Reinforce
● Used after session and similar to a post-hypnotic
suggestion
● After session, object, color, or action becomes
prevalent in your life
● Example, “Every time I see the color red, it reinforces
every positive suggestion I have accepted today.”
Emerging
Rejuvenate
● Used to reduce grogginess
● For example, simply suggest that, “upon emerging, I
will be awake, alert and back to wakeful awareness”
Emerging
Final Thoughts
● At the beginning of the emerging phase I will suggest that,
“with each number I will become 20% closer to being fully
emerged.”
● You may want to fall asleep instead of emerge
○ Suggest, “at the count of five I will absorb the
suggestions accepted by my subconscious mind and
drift into a peaceful dream state.”

  • 57. Crafting Effective Suggestions Specific ● Subconscious mind work on path of least resistance ● Subconscious will mix up your words ○ For, example, “I want to only drink no more than one can of soda a day” can become “No, I only want to drink more than one can of soda a day.”
  • 58. Crafting Effective Suggestions Believable ● Subconscious mind can’t tell between fact or fiction ● Be reasonable with your suggestion ● Smaller suggestions that build on your ultimate goal usually work best
  • 59. Crafting Effective Suggestions Behavioral ● Either an increase or a decrease in behavior ○ An action must be taken
  • 60. Crafting Effective Suggestions Present or Always Tense ● Never craft a suggestion in past or future tense ○ “I will exercise every day for 30 minutes” ● This suggests that it hasn’t happened yet
  • 61. Crafting Effective Suggestions Positive ● Address what you DO want, not what you DON’T want! ● Eliminate negative words “not,” “no,” and “never” ● Negative words greatly affect the potency of suggestions

  • 74. Getting in the Proper Mindset Now Go Get Your “Hypnosis Face” On!
  • 75. Inducing Hypnosis ● Purpose of an induction is to induce the hypnotic state ● Inductions come in many forms (relaxation, surprise, fear, etc.) ● Inductions can last for hours or seconds
  • 76. Inducing Hypnosis ● Most popular self-hypnosis induction ● Utilizes mental and physical relaxation simultaneously ● Progressive relaxation induction contains two things: ○ Frequent use of the word “relax” ○ Suggesting that each body part relaxes Progressive Relaxation Induction
  • 77. Inducing Hypnosis ● Start out by suggesting that each time you think the word “relax” or say it out loud, you begin to feel it throughout your body ● The word “relax” is your key that will unlock any stress or discomfort ● Use the image of a “white light” to cover your entire body Progressive Relaxation Induction
  • 78. Inducing Hypnosis ● The oldest and most classic of the induction methods ● Instructions: a. Focus on an object b. Suggest that it is your only concern c. Suggest that your eyes are becoming heavier and want to close ● Candles and incense sticks are great to use for this induction Eye Fixation Induction
  • 79. Inducing Hypnosis ● Utilizes double-binds ● Instructions: a. Suggest that one hand feels lighter than the other b. Lift lighter hand and stare at your palm c. Suggest that there is big magnet in the center of palm d. Suggest that there is also a magnet in the center of your forehead e. Allow the hand and forehead to come together f. Close your eyes and go into hypnosis when they touch Magnetic Induction
  • 80. Inducing Hypnosis ● Post-hypnotic suggestions give us this power ○ For example, “the next time I choose to do hypnosis I will simply say (INSERT HYPNOTIC CUE) and go right back into this state of hypnosis or deeper.” ○ We can use these to enter hypnosis or go to sleep ○ This saves us a ton of time Inducing Hypnosis Through Word or Phrase
  • 81. Inducing Hypnosis ● There are thousands of ways to induce hypnosis ● Don’t get overwhelmed ● Find the one(s) that suit you best ● Check out the scripts in this section Final Thoughts
  • 83. Deepening The Two Main Types of Deepeners: 1. Counting 2. Visualization
  • 84. Deepening Deepen with Counting ● Perform a slow count of 1-10 ● Suggesting each number brings you 10% deeper into hypnosis ● Suggest your body is relaxing between numbers
  • 85. Deepening Deepen with Visualization ● Spiral Staircase method most popular ● Each step takes your deeper ● Usually involves a pleasant scene ● Ascending stairs may work better for some
  • 86. Deepening Additional Deepening Techniques 1. Fractionation 2. Pyramiding of Inductions
  • 87. Deepening Fractionation Fractionation-slightly emerging and then quickly going back into hypnosis, resulting in a deeper state ● ...“on the count of three I'm going to open my eyes, then I will immediately snap my fingers and return to this level of hypnosis, or deeper.” ● Extremely powerful and proven technique
  • 88. Deepening Pyramiding of Inductions Pyramiding of Inductions-doing an induction immediately after completion of a previous one ● There is no limit to how many you can stack ● Useful technique for beginners ● After a while, most find their perfect induction
  • 89. Deepening Closing Tip Throughout the session, you can suggest, “I easily and effortlessly go deeper with each passing minute.”
  • 91. Techniques Post-Hypnotic Suggestion ● Suggestion carried out by your subconscious mind AFTER the session ● Instantly induce hypnotic state in future session ● Used as a deepener
  • 92. Techniques Post-Hypnotic Suggestion in the Waking State ● Suggest a physical gesture to use in waking state ● For example, rubbing fingers together when you crave a cigarette ● Other examples include: -putting hands through your hair -adjusting the collar on your shirt -clenching your fist
  • 93. Techniques Direct Drive ● Works on principle of repetition ● Repeat your suggestions at least 15 times in a row ● Your subconscious mind LOVES repetition!
  • 95. Convincers Eye Lock ● Most popular convincer ● “as my eyelids are pressing together they are becoming tighter. As I count from one to three they will twitch and tighten. When I get to three, I will try to open them, but you will NOT be able too...”
  • 96. Convincers Arm Lock ● Arm completely locked ● Suggest that your arm is “stiff and rigid like a bar of steel”
  • 97. Convincers Magnetic Fingers Instructions: 1. Clasp hands together with fingers intertwined 2. Space fingers apart 3. Each exhale makes your fingers more connected (as if there were magnets on the tips of your fingers)
  • 98. Convincers Heavy Arm Instructions: 1. Determine which arm feels heavier 2. Suggest the heavy arm becomes even heavier 3. If it still doesn’t feel heavier, imagine you are trying to hold a heavy dictionary in that hand
  • 99. Convincers Final thoughts ● Customize convincers as you see fit ● Convincers also act as deepeners ● Convincers are the final piece of preparation
  • 101. Emerging The “Not Recommended” Way ● “The cold water approach” Emerging by saying, “Ok, emerge!” ● Not pleasant and happens too sudden
  • 102. Emerging Typical Way To Emerge ● Count of five ● “In a moment, I'm going to count from one to five. When I get to five, I will open my eyes and emerge. Feeling wide awake and refreshed.”
  • 103. Emerging Follow the three R's of emerging: ● Reiterate ● Reinforce ● Rejuvenate
  • 104. Emerging Reiterate ● Recap the suggestions given during your session ● Example, “One, I am a non-smoker and will continue to be a non-smoker for the rest of my life...two….
  • 105. Emerging Reinforce ● Used after session and similar to a post-hypnotic suggestion ● After session, object, color, or action becomes prevalent in your life ● Example, “Every time I see the color red, it reinforces every positive suggestion I have accepted today.”
  • 106. Emerging Rejuvenate ● Used to reduce grogginess ● For example, simply suggest that, “upon emerging, I will be awake, alert and back to wakeful awareness”
  • 107. Emerging Final Thoughts ● At the beginning of the emerging phase I will suggest that, “with each number I will become 20% closer to being fully emerged.” ● You may want to fall asleep instead of emerge ○ Suggest, “at the count of five I will absorb the suggestions accepted by my subconscious mind and drift into a peaceful dream state.”
