In the case of a school year book the following happens:
• How big will the book be, amount of pages, and book size, A4, A5 etc? Portrait or landscape?
• Dispatch check
• Packaging, Invoicing and dispatch to customer takes place
• If, in the event of a customer complaint, the fault is reported to management and the print job starts over the

P
& Die cutting etc? What kind of paper to be used is also a major consideration, affecting quality, printing, price, binding and other headaches.
• Will the book be B/W or colour, or combination. If so how many pages will be B/W & colour.
• You and your client use decide on a theme to use throughout the book, which will help you decide on fonts, what colours to use, and the graphics to be
used, to make the book interesting and colourful and to bring a cross the right message.
• It is always better to make a ruff “dummy book” of the layout of the book, to decide what comes where and how big pics must be and so on.
• Photos must be give by the client in digital or hardcopy which must be scanned in, as well as write ups and content which must be typed by use or the
client which must be supplied in a text format, ms word etc.
• Once all these considerations have been made and the copy (photos, stock images, text, report) is ready, then the DTP can start his job of designing
the book in his programme.
of
• Page layout is most important stage for a DTP. He must determine page margins for text and graphics, which is like setting rules before you play.
Page numbers must be positioned and formatted which will follow though out the book.
• Text must be typed, copy and pasted. The fonts and sizes, headings, paragraphs and imprints must beconsidered. Photos must be converted to CMYK
and edited in Photoshop to get them perfect, altering the brightness and contrast to get them looking just right. Sometimes the colour levels must be
adjusted, a image might have to much red or blue, then the cyan or magenta must be adjusted.
a
• Clipart or vector images might also be used, which must be created by tracing them on the PC from a image or use an already made clipart from a
clipart CD.
• Once the DTP process is finished a proof must be printed out. The proof is usually B/W or colour and not colour accurate to the final, printed on a
laser printer on 80g bond paper.
• The first proof must be proof read for spelling mistakes, typos, compared to the copy to see that nothing is left out, check to see if the correct images
operator
have the correct captions etc.
• Usually a second proof is then sent to the client to be checked by them, then another. There may be as many as 7 proof or more, until the job is cor-
rect then printing will commence.
