2. Welcome to Cheney Court
the Linguarama Residential Training Centre
Cheney Court is a superb Jacobean mansion set in rolling countryside in the small
village of Ditteridge, just 6 miles from the historic and beautiful City of Bath, in
England’s famous West Country. Cheney Court is a key feature in the Linguarama
European network of over 20 language training centres.
Cheney Court provides the setting for the unique Linguarama ‘Residential
Concept’ where business and professional people who wish to learn English in the
minimum time and with the maximum efficiency can develop the specific
language skills they need to communicate more effectively.

4. Combining the amenities of a traditional English Country House with those of an advanced,
high technology language centre, Cheney Court creates the ideal ambience in which to absorb
not only the language but also the lifestyle and culture of the country.
Cheney Court itself – described by Nicholas Pevsner in his definitive book on Great English
Houses – is one of the foremost examples of 17th century architecture in the area. Course
participants will appreciate the care with which Linguarama have blended the special
requirements and high standards of service of a modern Training Centre, such as videoconferencing facilities, with the warm and comfortable atmosphere of a traditional English
family home.
In addition Linguarama have provided the social and sporting facilities which help make a stay
at Cheney Court so delightful. Both within Cheney Court itself and on the surrounding 11 acre
estate, the participant will find amenities such as a bar, all-weather floodlit tennis courts, sauna,
small fitness room and snooker and billiards room – and a superb 30 metre mediaeval Barn
which has been converted for use by the training centre.
In short, the participant will find at Cheney Court not only the most sophisticated languageteaching facilities, but also a complete ‘microcosm’ of English life and culture.
All participants enjoy their own en-suite bedroom with private bathroom, direct dial telephone,
radio and CD player. All bedrooms and classrooms have Internet access points so that participants
can use the Internet for learning and also for keeping in touch with home and office.
5. The Residential Concept
The Linguarama ‘Residential Concept’ has been
acknowledged as the most effective form of language
learning yet devised. If you are a busy executive, to
whom time is a scarce and valuable commodity,
Cheney Court provides the most efficient and most
powerful method of acquiring English to whatever
degree of fluency you require.
I A key ingredient of the concept is the opportunity to surround
yourself totally in the country, the culture and the atmosphere
of the language. From the moment you arrive, you are actively
involved in hearing, speaking and experiencing English during
every waking hour. In fact, many course participants report that
they even start to dream in English.
I The prime reward of the Residential Concept lies in the fact
that during your one-to-one lessons, communication activities,
mealtimes, Integrated Personal Study sessions and social events
– you have absolutely no distraction from the task of acquiring
fluency in the language.
I A second, perhaps more subtle, benefit stems from your stay in
a superb home in the heart of the English countryside – every
facet of whose daily life - design, furnishing, cuisine and
organisation - helps to bring alive not only the language but its
cultural and social setting as well.
I Thirdly, many participants stress to us the pleasure and interest
they derive from meeting and talking to their peers from other
cultures and nationalities. On any course you may encounter
senior commercial and industrial executives, administrators,
politicians, scientists and other leading figures from as many as
a dozen different countries - which will undoubtedly make your
stay even more enriching and rewarding.
6. The Cheney Court Programme
The keynote of the Linguarama Cheney Court
programme is the individualised nature of the training.
Before the course begins a detailed Training Needs
Analysis is used to establish your current level of
competence in the language and to identify your
specific objectives for the training. These will refer, for
instance, to the situations in which you will be using
English and the skills you need to acquire to work
more effectively and efficiently.
I Following this, your individual Programme is designed and a
small team of trainers led by a Senior Trainer or Programmer is
allocated to you.
I Every Cheney Court trainer is a qualified native-speaking
professional, chosen not only for their teaching skills but also
for their enthusiasm, patience and personality.
I Your formal teaching programme will also include a variety of
learning activities as recommended by your programmer and
discussed with you personally. These could involve
Communication Activities including Meetings, Presentations
Discussions and Information Exchanges, all involving several
participants with similar needs and language level. Integrated
Personal Study, using a variety of specially prepared materials
ensures that you are constantly challenged and involved.
7. However, there is never a time at Cheney Court when
you are not learning English. At mealtimes, coffee
breaks and during the relaxed social life after formal
study, you will still be speaking, thinking, listening,
discussing and enjoying the language. You will be
using English as the lingua franca for a broad
cultural and social exchange with your colleagues of
various nationalities and occupations – and
unconsciously continuing to practise and develop
8. Learning and leisure
In spite of the intensive nature of the Language
Programme at Cheney Court, participants will find
ample time to enjoy the wealth of leisure activities
which both the estate and its surroundings offer.
I In addition to relaxed socialising in the Cheney Court bar and
sitting areas, the spacious grounds offer such sports facilities as allweather floodlit tennis courts and small a pitch and putt golf
practice facility.
I Cheney Court’s location, amidst some of England’s most beautiful
countryside, provides the opportunity for charming walks and
short drives, enjoying the unspoilt landscape, or visiting the many
historic villages, stately homes and other places of interest in the
local area.
I A full programme of excursions for shopping, traditional English
pub evenings, theatres visits and social events is provided to allow
you to enjoy these amenities, and to use your growing vocabulary
in real-life situations.

10. The city of Bath
Only ten minutes’ drive from Cheney Court, the city of
Bath provides the nearest urban centre.
One of England’s oldest, most historic and most
graceful cities, Bath’s fame originates principally from
the hot medicinal springs which have drawn people to
the City since before Roman times.
Small and intimate enough to explore on foot, Bath
provides a panorama of English history, architecture
and culture – from the ruins of the old Roman baths to
the superb Nash terraces and public buildings which
have made Bath a jewel of English Georgian
architecture.
Today it is a bustling and thriving centre, with a varied
and lively social, artistic and commercial life which
delights and attracts discerning tourists from all over
the world. The new Thermae Spa centre provides a
modern, world class facility for enjoying the traditional
hot springs
