My name is Steve Kaufmann. I have achieved varying degrees of fluency in 15 languages, and look forward to learning more.
Here's an answer to a question I am asked frequently, "how do you start learning a language?"

3. Adopt the attitude of success. Make
sure you want to learn the language.
Visualize yourself
talking with people
comfortably in the
new language.
4. Start reading
and listening
daily, using easy
content, on your
computer or
mobile device,
where audio
and
dictionaries
are easily
accessible.
5. Don’t worry about
speaking at first, instead
focus on understanding.
Build up your familiarity with
the sounds, words and
structure of the new language.
6. At the beginning
you will need to
listen and read
repeatedly, going
over the same
content many
times. The
language will
remain unclear.
Just keep going.
7. Gradually move to more difficult
content, while regularly reviewing the
easier lessons you have already
studied.
8. If you want to speak, look
for native speakers on the
web or in
YOUR COMMUNITY
It will be difficult at first but
you have to keep going.
9. Develop your ability to express yourself
by writing short sentences or
translating phrases from the new
language into your own, and back.
Google translate can help.
10. A question
learners
frequently ask is
where do I start?
What is step
one in learning
a language?
Use the Internet to find
language exchange partners,
grammar information, audio
and text content, and
learning platforms like
