Objectives
● define what communication is;
● explain the nature of communication; and
● describe the process of communication.
Essential Question
Why is communication an essential human need?
Warm Up
Pass the Message
Have groups of three to five members. Make the teams fall in
line, with the group leaders facing the board. At the teacher’s
signal, each leader will read a message and will need to
whisper it to their next member. Each member thereon will
whisper the message to the next person up until the last
member of their line. The last member of the group has to
run in front of the board to recite or write down the original
message.
stimulus (noun) - an idea or concept that
a sender would like to convey
A conversation starts with a stimulus.
sender (noun) - the person who
encodes the message

Communication
● the transmission of ideas and emotions between or
among persons with the use of verbal and nonverbal
cues
● comes from the Latin word communis, which means
“common”
● helps people adapt to or survive in the place they live in

The Process of Communication
stimulus - an idea or concept that the sender has and would
like to convey
sender - encodes the message by putting it into words and
then expresses the ideas in proper sequence
receiver - accepts and decodes the message; chooses
whether to respond

feedback - given by the receiver when responding to the
message
noise - causes breakdown in the communication process; any
barrier or hindrance that obstructs the understanding of the
message

Example:
At a thrift store
Erika: Hi, miss. This one has no tag. How much does this dress cost?
Cashier: Oh that would be 280 pesos.
Erika: I see. I’ll take it then.
Erika then hands over 220 pesos to the cashier.
Cashier: Ah, miss, this isn’t enough. You still need to give me 60 pesos more.
Erika: Oh! It’s 280. I thought you said the dress was 218 pesos. My bad. Here’s the
60 pesos.

Lani: Yes, I have. But she won’t allow me to go because it’s on Sunday,
and we have classes the day after that.
Claire: It’s not on Sunday, Lani. It’s going to be on Saturday.
Lani: Oh, I must have misheard you on the phone because my siblings
were talking so loudly when we were speaking about it. I’ll ask my mother
again.
Claire: Okay. I’m hoping you’ll be able to make it.

Synthesis Activity
Your teacher will be putting sticky notes on your backs. With
the help of a partner, you have to guess the word written on
your sticky note. Listen to your teacher for more detailed
instructions.
Assignment
1. Observe a conversation you engage in.
2. Afterward, write down a short script of the conversation.
3. Then, explain the process of communication using that
conversation as an example.

  • 5. Warm Up Pass the Message Have groups of three to five members. Make the teams fall in line, with the group leaders facing the board. At the teacher’s signal, each leader will read a message and will need to whisper it to their next member. Each member thereon will whisper the message to the next person up until the last member of their line. The last member of the group has to run in front of the board to recite or write down the original message.
