DRIVING MISS DAISY
Driving Miss Daisy is about the relationship of an
elderly white Southern Jewish retired school teacher,
Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffeur,
Hoke Colburn, from 1948 to 1973. Over the course
of the play, we see the relationship grow from an un-
comfortable necessity to a caring and deep friendship.
In scenes both humorous and touching, we come to
know and understand these people: their hopes and
fears, their desires and disappointments. The growth
of their relationship is mirrored in the social events
of the time. Driving Miss Daisy opened in 1987 and
was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and in 1989
became an Academy Award winning film.
