Farms of Servers; servers are added based on need; servers jobs are changed based on change in computing needs
Cost is lower because a shared infrastructure is being used.
Subscription to software and the infrastructure instead of purchasing it.
Social acceptance is primary factor driving adoption
We are in a transition period; cloud computing is not a fad but technology change that is occuring.
One factors I’ve heard that could slower the trend (or reverse it) is if internet providers begin charging different rates for different speeds.
Its been around for a while.

in hardware virtualization, a hypervisor (a piece of software) imitates a computer hardware.
This may be more than you want or need to know. But it is a buzz word that you should have some familiarity with.
This too is probably more than you want or need to know. IT is acronym crazy.

Platform as a service — Cloud platform services, whereby the computing platform (operating system and associated services) is delivered as a service over the Internet by the provider.
"Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)", delivers computer infrastructure - typically a platform virtualization environment - as a service. Rather than purchasing servers, software, data-center space or network equipment, clients instead buy those resources as a fully outsourced service. Suppliers typically bill such services on a utility computing basis and amount of resources consumed (and therefore the cost) will typically reflect the level of activity. IaaS evolved from virtual private server offerings
A major difference between IaaS and PaaS is the amount of control over the system available to users of the services. IaaS provides total control, PaaS typically provides no control. This also means virtually zero administration costs for PaaS whereas IaaS has administration costs similar to a traditional computing infrastructure.
There are a number of PaaS providers including Google App Engine, Microsoft Azure and Salesforce.com’s Force.com.
IaaS is Amazon AWS, Rackspace Cloud Servers.

Will ultimately be this but mis-leading now. It is a virtualized environment. Pooling of resources – moving to a model of anytime, anywhere access to technology (i.e. your data, your applications, your email, etc.)
Cloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources.

Number 1-3 are the same reasons you would outsource your IT to someone like CMIT Solutions.
Great when you need a fraction of a server. Most minimal SM server is $5000 for hw-sw-setup labor. A SM server can be 10K even $15K depending on number of people and applications that are being run.
Cost of maintaining and supporting it (whether its outsourced or not). How long is going last? How long will that piece of hardware meet your needs? Rate of new OS and application needs.
