What is a Doula?What is a Doula?
A doula is a professional support person who assists the mother and partner in
preparing for birth and provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational
support during labor and the immediate postpartum period.
Doulas DO:
• Support ALL types of births and where
you choose to deliver
• Aim to strengthen the mother/partner
bond
• Provide suggestions for comfort measures,
pain management and progress
• Work with your doctor, nurse, and
midwife as a team
• Help the mother gather information she
needs to make her own decisions
• Reassure, encourage, and remind the
mother of her inner strength

• 28% less likely to have a cesarean section
• 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin
to speed up labor
• 9% less likely to use any pain medication

Doulas DON’T:
• Perform medical procedures, tests, or exams
• Replace your partner or your care provider
• Give medical advice or speak on your behalf
• Have an opinion on how you should birth
