What is the internet?
The internet is a worldwide collection of networks that links million of businesses, government agencies, educational institutions and individuals. It is now a essential in everyone's lifestyle.
The internet was originated as ARPANET (Advance research projects agency) in 1969 with 2 main goals: Allow scientists to share work in different locations and to function even if the networks were destroyed by a disaster. It became publicly available in 1991
1993:World wide web - dial up internet access was limited to 56 kbps modems connecting through phone lines - approximately $22
In 2000: broadband (a faster internet connect than dial up/higher speed internet) became popular with 50% more subscriptions - approx $40 with 361 million users.
Over the years, mobile phones have changed their networks. For example In 2000 3G (384 kbps) it would take 26 hours to download a 2 hour movie. In 2010 4G (100Mbps) would take 6 minutes to download a 2 hour movie. In 2020 5G (10 gbps) would take 3.6 seconds to download a 2 hour movie. This shows that now we will have the fatest internet ever. Currently 4G offers the fastest means of downloading data
By 2024 there will be 155 million 5G subscribers
Mobile and smartphones are the most used digital devices for internet access followed by Laptops/desktops, then tablets and then other devices such as tv’s
There are numerous activities that people do on their digital devices such as watching videos, shopping, streaming TV, playing games, watching live stream of games and watching sports tournaments.
89% of consumers start researching or buying process with a search engine. This pie chart shows the most common search engines used. As you can see, Google is the most common and popular by far with over 90% usage. Why? Google has always focused on its algorithm giving a better user experience unlike other search engines.
Social media is another way consumers search for information./ Facebook, LinkedIn and twitter have become the primary source of information gathering. .in 2017- 62% of adults get their information from social media.
References such as testimonials. Case studies and reviews online are another way consumers gain information about a business.
57% of people prefer to shop online than in store this is because you don’t have to leave your bed, you can opt in for next day delivery, you can have more product information and is less time consuming than going out. On the other hand, individuals do not like shopping online due to high shipping costs, order taking a long time to ship and having to enter a lot of details (such as address, card information).
The top 5 products bought online are clothes, entertainment, shoes, electronics such as smartphones and TV’s and food and drink. 43% of individuals research products online via social networks before completing their order.
Online videos have become increasingly popular with consumers over the years. Before Youtube, viral videos through emails were a thing. In 2005 when Youtube was introduced - videos have become increasingly popular.
On average, people spend 3.7 hours a day on their mobiles with the majority being videos. Consumers can watch product reviews on video rather than comments
500 million hours of videos are watched on YouTube every day
Social Media: TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat are all seen as video entertainment
49% of people watch more than 5 videos a day online
Videos are the most effective way of marketing
Video consumption / remote working has increased in the last few months
By 2022: online videos will make up 82%+ of all consumer internet traffic
Augmented Reality has enhanced the consumer online shopping experience. Online shopping is already extremely popular with as discussed previously saving time and effort. However, many people dislike online shopping due to the fact you cannot try on the clothes, see how to cupboard would fit in your bedroom or any other furniture. Therefore AR has helped customers visualise how this will fit into their lives such as true to scale 3D models of a sofa.
Voice search has increased due to more people buying Amazon Alexa’s, Google assistants and even using voice search on phones such as SIri. More people are making purchases this way and ways to improve this.
Artificial Intelligence have helped shops learn about the consumer. For example, having AI to help with their social media, websites, in store ‘’help’’, and more.
Mobile shopping is already very popular and it will improve. For example, a smoother experience when checking out and viewing the item or the ability to use offline
