2. ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT 1 (PROCESS ESSAY)
A sketch is defined as a rough and quick drawing to describe something
without a lot of details. Sketching skills usually useful to art student or art
profession. For a student from Foundation in Natural and Built Environment, this
is a good chance for us to explore the process of sketching throughout this
project. As a student that will be going to be a quantity surveyor, it is quite
important for me to experience how to sketch although it is not in our study field.
In my opinion, a sketch is a drawing that can record down every thought in our
mind no matter anytime or anywhere. Therefore, how to produce an attractive
sketch?
The first step of sketching is to choose an object to sketch. First and
foremost, I chose kitchen peeler as my sketching material as the theme of this
sketching task is kitchen utensils. The reason I chose peeler as my sketch object
is because it was the first object appeared in my mind when the task was given.
A peeler is used to remove the outer layer of food such as potato, apple, etc.
There are two types of peeler which is straight peeler and Y-shaped peeler.
Therefore, the peeler that I am going to sketch is straight peeler because it is the
only type of peeler in my house. Next, we should observe the object from every
angle before we start to sketch. The peeler is formed by a small rectangular
shaped cutter attached to the plastic-made holder. The peeler did not smell bad
3. as it was cleaned after used. Even the peeler have been using for years, it is still
sharp because my skin on the finger was just accidentally peeled by the peeler!
Before I start off with my sketch, I completed my tools needed such as H
and 2B pencils, eraser, sharpener, tissues, A3 drawing paper and also
conductive light source from my table lamp. I also cleaned my workspace as it
was very messy and it will disturb my work. When sketching, I abandoned the
use of mechanical pencil as it would not fulfill my desired effects compared to
pencil. In my sketch, H pencil was used to touch up the light shadow of the
peeler while 2B pencil was used for the darker ones. In sketching, tissue helped
to embellish the sketch by lengthen the shadow into a harmony tone. To
construct a shadow, I sought the help of the light from my table lamp and
adjusted it until a perfect angle obvious enough for me to examine. Other than
that, it is important to prepare ourselves mentally. I ensure myself to be in the
best peace of my mind because sketching involves focus and serenity of the
mind.
After everything was prepared, it is time to sketch. It was my fresh and
brand new experience in sketching. I have to admit that I was a complete novice
at sketching. Yet, I would like to try it out and explore the fun in it. I tried to look
for tutorial videos on how to sketch on YouTube, but my attempt was in vain.
Unfortunately, it did not help me a lot and at last I had decided to do it on my
own. I sketched several times on a draft paper and compared each result. Soon,
4. I set my eyes on the peeler. During sketching, I found that I am not good in
shading the object. It was quite hard for me as I need to decide which kind of
pencil I need to use for different levels of shadow. The most difficult part to
sketch is the cutter because I was unable to sketch it from the respective angle.
After I did my sketching, I had asked my family for their opinion. I also took a
picture of it and sent to my friends to get their comments. There were still a lot for
me to improve in sketching especially shading the object. I knew my mistakes
and I tried several times to sketch it. In the end, I succeeded to sketch the peeler
completely with shadow and three dimensions effect.
The sketch took me about two hours to complete. During this two hours, I
gave myself some break time to calm down and clear my mind as I failed many
times. I had modified the sketch several times until I did the best sketch. This
sketch project had given me an opportunity to learn new things and upgrade
myself. I also found that it was actually fun and I enjoyed the satisfaction after I
completed the sketch. I will do this again in future as it was a really fresh and
great experience for me.
