Here are the key insights I gathered from your audience research:
- Your target audience is people ages 16 and older interested in interior design and architecture.
- The audience is split between male and female, so you'll want to use neutral colors and include a variety of interior design topics (bedrooms, kitchens, etc.) to appeal to both genders.
- The age range of your audience is mixed between teenagers and young adults, so you'll need content that interests people across those age groups. Interactive elements like pages for writing ideas could engage younger audiences.
- Bedrooms are the most popular room type among your audience, so focusing on bedroom design for things like your scale model photos would be relevant. However,
3. Existing Products
This first product is a book which show the interior designer’s work. She made this book as a
portfolio and I found it very interesting and similar to my idea. For start, I really liked the cover, it
hints what the book is about along with the title in the side, in this book she created shapes using
images that matched with the background and the colours that she used on the rest of the page. I
intent to create a book similar to this, I might use the idea of creating a collage with the images
that I will be taking from my scale model in details. Another aspect that I liked about this book is
the layout of it, she separated each section to a different project that she worked on and in each
section she detailed shows how it was planned and each step that she made and why did she
made. In my product I want to create something similar, I could include the plant of the scale
model before building it up, it will add more information about the building and it will be
interesting to see it in the page. Rita brings her work to live by using parts of her work in the
pages as an illustration which makes the page look even more interesting. She also uses the same
colours that she used on her projects in the pages which makes the content fit perfectly with the
page and all the layout. I think that by having a different layout on each page it makes the book
even more eye catching, the colours matching with her projects and fonts. I was quite impressed
while looking the pages and seeing the details and each step that she planned was quite inspiring
to create this project. Based on the context and the colours, I believe that this existing product
might be appealing for adults that work in the area, she created this book to show her projects to
future projects and it is a way of getting in the industry of interior design. It’s a way of present her
work to the world, specially in business. Furthermore, the first thing that gets your attention to
read the book is the cover, for me, what attracts me to read most of the things are the cover and
the masthead of it. In this book each page made me want to read more and more because of the
colours and the different layout.

I found this book in the same website as the previous one, Issuu is a good website to
find work in different areas. Analysing this book I was able to find some interesting
facts about it. I found the book quite similar to an actual magazine because of the
masthead right on the top of the cover and next to the cover lines. While researching
about this magazine I found out that the book is actually connected with the
magazine Interior Design which is also part from Sandow. Sandow shows the
inspirations and ideas for interior design. I think is quite useful for researching as
they actually gives example of books, magazines, events on the area. They show that
The use of pastel colours in the front cover are also eye catching but I feel like it
could have more information in the page as it is quite simple and that’s probably why
I liked the previous front cover more than the cover of this existing product.
However, I really liked the content of this book, the way that they give details to each
part that they are talking about such as a small space. They show what they have
used and why they used that specific object. Their work are quite colourful which I
believe also catch their audience’s attention, some have pastel colours in the
furniture which matches with the space. I intent to use strong colours that will also
match with the whole content on the page including the images.
7. Existing Products
I liked the colours and the way that they made this cover, it is quite simple
but it shows exactly what the magazine is about, which is interior design,
architecture, product design and exhibition design. While researching I was
able to see that most of their cover are with shapes and using art in the
main image of the magazine. In my opinion, this is quite interesting to see a
magazine with totally different mood, looking into the cover you won’t be
able to know straight away what is the main subject of the magazine but the
audience will know that is related with art and design along with interior
design. Their products are appealing to their target audience as it being
adults on average age of 37. Another thing that I liked about this existing
product is the different fonts that they used, even though they are matching
perfectly with the whole page. I intent to use a nice font that will be eye
catching in my cover and in the headlines of the articles.

9. Existing Product
In this book the designer showed her work which is similar to the existing
projects that I have compared with my work. A thing that I liked about this
product is the way that the colours is matching in all the pages, she chose
to use a colour scheme. I really liked the idea of using the same colours that
is present on the images that she used on the pages. Furthermore, she
used each page to show the step that she made before getting in the final
part of the project. She also created a chart in the pages with the
audience’s responses about their age and their opinion about certain
things. This helps the audience to feel attached with the project as she is
using their opinion to create something that will be appealing to all of
them. In this case, the responses might be from a group of citizen that live
in the area or people that actually have some knowledge in the area. This
will influence in my product as I might create something similar but instead
of creating a portfolio I will be creating a book which will be a version of my
own work and designs.
10. Existing Product - Summary
• I looked at four different products that I found quite similar to the idea that I
want to make. This products are similar as the majority are portfolios from
interior designers that used this books as a creative way to show their work. I
decided based on this products that I will be creating a book as I think I will
have more freedom to create anything that I want. I also decided that I will try
make every page different instead of using a pattern to make it all similar. I
think it will make the book interesting to read as the audience will be
expecting to see a different content and layout on each page.
• The existing products provided me a base idea of what I want to be creating
and the purpose of it. Analysing the colours and what they have done in the
pages will help me decide the style that I want my book to have. I want my
product to be simple but sophisticated and different from my past products.
• Some of the existing products also have the same colour pattern neutral and
pastel colours. For my product I’m planning to use the same idea of using the
colours to express my feelings through the pages making all the pages
matching.

Frame Magazine. (2019). Media Kit. Available: https://www.frameweb.com/media/files/rtf/Mediakit_2019.pdf. Last accessed 6th Feb 2020.
13. Audience Research – Frame Magazine
The Frame magazine is targeting their products for female and male adults
between the age 24 to 44 years old as they have an average age of 37. It also shows
that the most popular area that the audience is constantly interested is interior
design and then architecture which works closely with interior design. However, it
shows that 54% of their audience are male but still appealing for women as it has
46% of women which is quite high comparing to magazines that have their
products target to men. This means that they are targeting both genders, although
this I can be using neutral colours pallet and content that can be enjoyed by both
genders. I will ensure that I will be targeting a good audience with this. Another
aspect that they are showing is the areas that they have more audience by having
55% EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa). This shows that most part of their
audience are from a diversity of places leaving only 20% from Asia Pacific and 20%
Americas. For my product it would be interesting to also appeal different places as I
can also make it appealing for South America, specifically Brazil creating a
Portuguese version of my work. I can also give some examples of interior designing
of different cultures which I think will be quite interesting to see in my product; a
collection of different interior designers from different places of the world.

15. Audience Research – Elle Decor
Elle Décor is a guide of decorating and design, in each issue they try to give
different and sophisticated decoration. I really liked the covers that I looked into
while researching, they use colours that matches with the main image and the
rest of the content. Some of the magazines that I have looked at they use colours
to help with the contrast but at the same time it is also matching with the
furniture and the location that the image was taken. Although, this magazine are
targeting their products for women by having the majority of their audience as
female than male. I was quite impressive about the age range of the magazine as
they have young audience than what I was expecting, the age range of this
magazine is 25 to 54 years old by having 66%. However, it also shows that most of
their audience are older than 35 and most of them are currently married. For my
product I intent to achieve an young group of audience, for this I might research
my audience trying to find out the areas in interior design that might interest
them the most. Using this information I will be able to bring young adults to be
interested in the area. In my product I will be using neutral colours so that it can
be appealing for my target audience, but I might also consider using strong
colours so that it could catch more the audience attention, specially my audience.
Another thing that I might consider is giving them step by step DIY of how to
create a nice decoration furniture for the bedroom.

The White Company, For the Love of White: The White
& Neutral Home by Chrissie Rucker & The White
Company
Rucker, C (2019). The White Company, For the Love of White: The White & Neutral Home. -: Octopus Books. 256 pages.
17. Audience Research
In this book, Chrissie gives the audience amazing guide of using white and
neutral colours. She says that 'The thing about white is that it goes with
everything, it is a canvas for life, whoever you are and whatever your tastes.
You just can't beat it.’ I think that she is completely right about that as white
will be match and appears in different places. It will be stuck in your life as it
is a colour that can make a space sophisticated as it express a such peaceful
feeling. I really liked her cover. It shows exactly what the book is about and
what should the reader be expecting to see and read in the book. I was
reading some reviews for this book and the audience is quite impressive with
the product as they are recommending for others. Looking through this I was
able to analyse that their audience is actually interested in achieve some
knowledge about interior design.
19. Audience Research – Introduction
• I have decided that my target audience for this project is anyone over the age
16 who are interested in Interior Design and Architecture. It might be a bit
trickier to make the product appealing for this specific group. However, I believe
only those that are interested in knowing a bit more about Interior Design will
be the ones that will take this product seriously.
• I created this survey to send it out for different group of audience as my main
intention was to analyse their thoughts about this project along with Interior
Design. I also decided to only use some of the questions that I asked because
are questions that are relevant and will actually help me through the process of
creating this project.
• I want my book to have a diversity of articles that will be matching with my
audiences' responses of this survey because they helped me decide important
things about this project such as the location that I will be focusing on and also
the style that will be standing out from others.
• Analysing this survey I can now focus on researching the content of my book
that will appeal all my audience.
21. Audience Research - Survey
In this survey I focused on knowing my audience's opinion for this project.
I tried to ask questions that would be relevant and at the same time it
would be also helping me decide important aspects about the project. In
this question I was able to see that my audience are divided between men
and women. To make the product appealing for both genders I decided to
not use colours that can be recognized as a specific type of gender such as
blue for male and pink for female. I intend to use neutral colours; a mix of
colours in the pages, colours that will be matching with the content of the
pages. I will also try to include different areas of interior design such as
bedrooms, gardens, kitchens, garages or bathrooms to make the content
interesting for both genders. I believe that a colourful page will make the
product eye catching for all the genders, for that I will try use colours that
will match with my plan for this project.
23. Audience Research
Through this question I was able to analyse the age range of my audience.
My audience is quite mixed between teenagers under the age 18 and
young adults over 18. In this product, I will make sure that all the content
of this product will be appealing for the audience, my main idea is to make
a diversity of context that will be interesting for the audience. I want to
create a product that will go further to collect a different group of age that
can be also interested in interior design. This helped me looking decide
carefully the aspects that will make this specific audience interested on this
product, the colours also might help during this process. I can create a page
where the audience can write on so that the audience could leave their
thoughts and own ideas. I can also use my draw skills to make illustrations
in the pages to make it even more interesting, I can also analyse tutorials to
gain more skills in the area so that I can achieve a good product that will
catch this specific audience's attention.
25. Audience Research
It says that 70% of my audience have bedroom as their favourite space, 15%
living room, 10% kitchen and 5% other. Through that I could see that the
majority of my audience prefer bedrooms so I decided to create a bedroom
in my scale model which I will be taking pictures to use in the front cover of
my book. I asked this question with the intention of knowing what they like
and also a way that would help me decide which room to use in my cover.
This was extremely helpful for me as I wasn’t sure which place would be the
best to focus on. Now I can focus on bedrooms and using that I will be
making the product appealing for this specific audience. However, I also
decided to create a mix of content, this will make the product interesting
and different. Instead of talking about just a specific space I will be giving
the audience the opportunity to see different areas of the house and
different ways of designs. To make that I will research ways of decorating
and remaking their own furniture using simple items.
27. Audience Research
In this question I decided to give my audience the option to choose the
style that they might be interested the most, through it I could see that
35% of my audience are interested in minimalist. I was quite impressed to
see the mix of choices in there. I initially thought that my audience would
be confused about that question but it ended up giving me information
that I wasn’t expecting. I will try create sections of different styles in the
book so that it could appeal for this audience and go further to appeal the
rest of the audience that are interested for example in vintage, eclectic,
coastal or cotemporary. I also intend to use vivid colours that are matching
with the style that interests my audience. I feel like this will help the page
have a good appearance and also grab my audience’s attention to read the
page instead of moving to another.
29. Audience Research
Analysing this question I realised the diversity of answers that my audience gave
to me related to what would interests them in a Interior Design book. I found the
answers quite helpful as it says different aspects that would be interesting to focus
on. In this question I asked my audience what interests them in a book and what
would be interesting to see in this product. Most of the answers are quite similar
as they said that the content is really important. From this I can infer that to make
the product appealing for this audience I will make sure that I’m including all the
aspects that they specifically answered in this question. A specific person of my
audience stated that they would like to see colour pallets based of the chosen
season; which is summer as it is the preference of my audience. I think that it will
be relevant to consider this idea to not only appeal for this audience but also to
make the page more detailed about different areas to consider while planning a
space. Another person from my audience also said that it would interests them if
the book contains simple tricks that them can recreate using without spending
money hiring a designer. I intend to give step by step of DIY furniture that would
give an idea to them that with simple things you can change and create lots of
other things.
30. Overall Summary
• I considered three important sections for this research; existing products, primary and secondary
audience research. Each of this sections that are extremely important and helpful for the progression of
this project as now is my final project as through this I was able to collect ideas and analyse in existing
products the methods that they have used. In the existing product, I collected different and new ideas
that I didn’t think of in the past products. For example the idea of creating a book that will be mixing
different content almost similar to a magazine, however, in the book I will be free to create anything
that I would like to explore. If I have enough time I can also create an issue for a magazine that is similar
to the book and both will give different areas to work on. I was also able to analyse how they layout
their products to make it so interesting and in different ways they caught my attention to read their
product.
• In the primary audience research it allowed me to analyse the existing products’ audience and the
group that their products were targeting on. Knowing this helped me to decide which group my product
would be appealing for and how would I being doing that. I could analyse a bit about each existing
product which I found quite interesting to know specially about the book’s reviews as I couldn't find any
media kit for the books that I was looking at. Another aspect that has a lot of impact in my decisions
was the survey for my secondary research, this somehow always ended up helping me decide
important things of my products. This time, it has helped me decide small little things such as the style
that I will be using on my front cover and the styles that my audience are interested the most. Through
this I can now focus on making the pages different with a content that will appeal all groups of my
audience.
• I’m now ready to move forward to the next step of my project which will be problem solving. In this
stage I will be able to analyse the potential problems that might happen during the process of making
the scale model or taking the images that I need for this project.
