2. Playing Fantasy Premier League (FPL)
Fantasy football is a virtual game in which participants set up an
imaginary team of real life footballers and score points based on those
players' actual statistical performance or their proven contribution on
the field of play.
3. The game asks participants to select 15 players
within a price budget. There is usually a
restriction on the number of players per club; a
typical selection would be to select 1
goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 4 or 3 midfielders and
2 or 3 forwards. Some games are squad-based,
where participants choose not just a first eleven
but also a set of 4 substitutes.
4. As well as the above, points can be deducted for some or all of the following - missing a
penalty kick, conceding a goal (goalkeepers, and defenders only), receiving a yellow or
red card, getting substituted before a certain time, scoring an own goal.
Points are then gained or deducted depending on players' performances. Points systems
vary between games but typically, points are awarded for some or all of the following
achievements such as playing in a match (or part of a match e.g. at least 60 minutes),
creating an assist, keeping a clean sheet (goalkeepers, midfielders and defenders only),
scoring a goal, saving a penalty, goalkeeper saving 3 shots or more.
5. I started playing FPL in 2012, and overtime, I have developed a deep interest for the
game for several reasons.
• It connects me with various FPL players around the world (there are
approximately 4.3 million players worldwide).
• I have learnt to always think strategically and have contingency plans.
6. • The game has a weekly show in which a panel of experts render tips, opinions,
extended detailed analysis, fresh team news and advice concerning different
players to assist fantasy managers in setting up their teams weekly.
• Most players even start to feel like pundits because of the deep involvement in
every match statistic and outcome.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT ??
8. DUE DILIGENCE & ADEQUATE RESEARCH
• With respect to investing, it helps you learn to do you homework
diligently if you want to win. You have to take a closer look at
players and match stats, analyze each club’s atmosphere and its
subsequent impact on its players for every match.
• Historic data most times tend to help make decisions concerning
certain games and indicates players’ confidence levels for certain
games such as derbies. (Akin to analyzing past company
performances in order to predict a performance for next quarter
or full year)
9. BUDGETING
• It has taught me how to use a limited budget to set an optimal
team that can win games week in and week out, which can be
related to setting optimal portfolios in portfolio management.
• It also taught me how to make strategic and well calculated
risks.
10. PATIENCE AND STRATEGIC THINKING
• It has taught me to be patient with people. At times in the
game, the best players can disappoint for several weeks due to
several reasons (low morale, poor form, team instability, etc.),
sometimes being patient can make you reap profits or gains
where impatient managers missed out due to impatience.
• I have also learnt how to make strategic plans with certain look
ahead biases.
• I have also learnt to use different methods to solve different
problems, and that every move made should have a good
balance of short term and long term benefits.
11. PEOPLE SKILLS
• I have learnt to interact with people from different cultures,
exchange information, see their point of view regarding certain
decisions they make which has enabled me to see some things
that were hidden in blind spots of my thoughts.
13. FUN, FUN AND BANTER
• Let’s not forget that it’s a game, so of course it’s a lot of fun
competing with friends and colleagues within and outside the
country.
• There are also prizes weekly, monthly and at the end of the
whole competition in different categories.
• It’s a great way to unwind with friends over the weekend and
catch a good laugh.
