● In a simple (closed) fracture,
a bone breaks but the skin
over it does not.
● In a compound (open)
fracture, both the bone and
skin break. An open fracture
is in danger of infection.

occurs when a bone breaks
into two or more major
fragments or as many as
hundreds of tiny pieces.
● In a grenstick fracture, the
break cuts only part way
through the bone.

A sprain is an injury to a
ligament or to the tissue that
covers a joint. Most sprains
result from a sudden wrench
that stretches or tears the
tissues of the ligaments.

Bone dislocation occurs when the
end of the bone is forced out is
normal position in a joint.
Signs of dislocations include pain
an unusual position of the joint or
bone and tenderness and swelling
around the injury. The victim is
unable to use the dislocated part.
