Leandro Silvério has a Master degree in
Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering obtained
from Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA) in
2013. Currently he is a PhD candidate in the
department of Materials, Manufacturing and
Automation at the same institute. His main research
interests are Lean Manufacturing, Lean Product
Development Process and Lean Assessment Tools.
Luís Gonzaga Trabasso, Ph.D., is a graduate
mechanical engineer from Universidade Estadual Paulista
Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Brazil (1982) and has master of
science in engineering and aerospace technology from
Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, Brazil (1985) and
Ph.D. in mechanical engineering Loughborough University,
England (1991) and pos-doctorate in Human Centered
Systems at Linköping University, Sweden (2017). He has
held various positions as a professor at the Instituto
Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, Brazil (ITA) since he entered in
1984. He is one of the founders of the Competence Center of
Manufacturing at ITA (CCM/ITA), a laboratory that hosts
strategic projects with industrial partners. Currently, he is the
Chief Researcher at Senai Innovation Institute - Joinville -
SC as well as a full professor - collaborator - at ITA, focusing
his research on integrated product development (IPD), Lean
IPD, industrial automation, and robotics.
Marcus Vinicius Pereira Pessôa, PhD PMP, is
an assistant professor at the Design, Production and
Management Department in the University of Twente,
the Nederlands. He is a retired officer from the
Brazilian Air Force, where he worked in several air
defense, and air traffic management systems
development projects. His main research focus is in
the improvement of the Product Design and
Development process, particularly by considering the
interconnection between the disciplines of Systems
Engineering and Project Management.

Today manufacturing sectors are more competitive than
before. Thus, to execute an enterprise’s transformation in a
company emerging as a lean organization it is crucial to have
assessments and performance measurements that observe
multiple variables during the lean implementation patch.

Leanness level:
- The system solution must access every development phase, allowing managers to
promptly react to changes whenever they occur;
- The development phases can be accessed by the leanness level definition;
- A leanness level is a performance measure of lean operations;
- The leanness level is a relative measure of whether a company is lean or not;
- By attacking the leanness level early in the project, companies can rapidly react to
changes with countermeasures.

Framework:
From the assessed studies, over 90 papers, articles, journals, and full thesis from
the last 23 years were screened and refined in order to compose a systematic literature
review according to the following criteria:
A) Is the model approach a qualitative or quantitative assessment?
B) Does the model have defined indicators?
C) Does the model provide the enterprise’s leanness level?
D) Does the model provide a lean roadmap after the assessment is performed?

leanness definition, associated with a roadmap to provide
insights for decision makers.

- This research compiled various performance measurement and improvement of
lean manufacturing (LM) operations in the PD industry;
- It was identified a reduced number of papers focused on lean implementation
roadmaps; and a widely range of practical studies on LM implementation practices;
- This paper will serve as insights for future researches and practitioners focused on
the new performance measures, tools and methods for the lean operations;
- This paper will serve as a screening reference method for conducting a literature
review in different industrial segments;
- This paper demonstrated a research framework to summarize the existing
evaluation standards for a literature review construction.
