Contents pages found from well established magazines in which i have annotated and evaluated to help the research aspect of my project to help make my magazine.
1. Dark Coloured
Background- connotes a
sense of death and pain
(which rock music
generally represents). It
creates a sense of
loneliness but also
curiosity as the reader
wants to find out what
they can’t see and why
they can’t.
Humorous yet slightly disturbing facial
expression. The hooked mouth connotes
that he has been caught (like a fish) which is
appealing to the audience as they wonder
why he has, the wonder what is so great
about the magazine and so read it. Also the
wide eyes suggest that he is shocked at
something, the reader becomes intrigued as
to why he is shocked.
Non-consecutive page
numbers meaning that the
reader is more likely to
read the whole magazine
as they wonder whether
all of the pages that were
skipped are to do with the
previous story as they
won’t want to miss half of
the story.
Continuous advertising of
the brand and name of
magazine (top right)
showing a link between the
cover page and the
magazine showing
continuous loyalty to the
magazine brand.
the use of the red supports this sense of danger and
warning that rock music suggests, the sense of loud,
vibrant effects that rock music has on people.
also the white suggesting a sense of purity but as it also
stands out against the black background it jumps at the
readers eye and attracts their attention.
Quote- suggesting they
have done thorough
research for the page.
School uniform like costume-
suggesting the target audience is
for younger people.
2. Non-consecutive page numbers
meaning that the reader is more
likely to read the whole magazine
as they wonder whether all of the
pages that were skipped are to do
with the previous story as they
won’t want to miss half of the story.
The use of space is appealing as
they include pictures to show
what is involved but also use
writing and words (it attracts
two audiences instead of just
one- people who enjoy finding
out new things from visual
aspects and pictures and people
who enjoy reading information).
The don't carry the brand name through
to the cover page creating a sense of
disloyalty and un-continuity between the
pages and information.
The colour yellow is often associated
with very happy atmospheres creating
an almost jolly, more pleasant/warm
feel to the page. However it has a
juxtaposed red used which is often
associated with danger and warning.
The use of the dangerous yet happy
atmosphere of the page could reflect
how rock music makes people feel as
they will often base their songs around
things or people that sometimes make
them happy, yet that happiness is
dangerous for them as it wont last/it
will be ruined.
The advantage of having the artists
on the page is useful as it not only
promotes what is to come in the
magazine, however as many of them
are very famous and respected
artists- it creates the sense that the
magazine is a genuine and respected
magazine (but it also creates a
flowing atmosphere as the pictures
show what is to come and the reader
knows what to expect just from a
quick glance at the page).
Text is in columns
3. Non-consecutive page numbers
meaning that the reader is more
likely to read the whole
magazine as they wonder
whether all of the pages that
were skipped are to do with the
previous story as they won’t
want to miss half of the story.
the use of the red supports this
sense of danger and warning
that rock music suggests, the
sense of loud, vibrant effects
that rock music has on people
The costume choice was very well
picked for this content page as it
holds the traditional leather jacket
and red hair that many rock artists
have showing a clear visual
connection between the music genre,
the artist and what the magazine is
about.
His facial expression looking off
into the distance, not making
eye contact with the camera
makes the reader want to carry
on reading as they want to feel
more accepted into the
magazine- more involved (as
looking straight into the
camera makes an audience
feel)
The use of the single male
artist is appealing to the
audience as it doesn't make
them feel too threatened
like having many new and
different faces fill a page
often does.
Almost dreamy facial expression- suggesting
that he is above the photo-shoot, this
represents the genre of rock music due to the
fact that the stereotypical view of many rock
artists act like they are above the audience
when they are performing, like they are ‘too
cool’ for it. (for example hen arctic monkeys
perform, the lead singer is aware that he is well
known and popular leading him to act in a
prestige and almost royal manner.
The light coming through the darkness in
the edge of the background- supporting
many rock themed songs as they are
usually about something dark (the pain
that someone has caused them for
example) yet have something deeper and
more happy to the lyrics (the light
coming through the dark).
