Hi, my name is Laura and I work in Qualitative Marketing Research, QMR.
I am also GenY
We love to try on many different hats.
One of the ones I wore before was being engaged in Conflict Management
What you learn is : at the heart – a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation
Useful lense: private life, working with youngsters in the caucasus OR trying to analyse relationship GenY QMR
BECAUSE as a conflict manager: enabler
So let‘s mythbust some preconceptions
And see how the WHY GENERATION and the WHY INDUSTRY can be a perfect match

Starting a relationship – you first need to have some basic communication skills in order to attract partners.
I wanted to show the world that I was an Emo now.
Beginning of many self-curated personas.
Embracing chameleon culture GenY lives in
Self marketing and self – representation is the lense through which we view the world
QMR can seem underwhelming through the lense of self-marketing
Best Of Anti Marketing QMR Websites of some colleagues who are doing a really bad job --> but no colleague bashing ----> a more harmless example
QMR sounds not relevant - You don‘t hear anything about qmr only how it differs from qant
In turn, qmr might wonder where are all those highly qualified ppl that fit the high standards of our industry
Storytelling – QMR is great at that – that‘s why I love working in the industry. A great story lives from its protagonists – so put people at the centre.
VISUAL language: visual is important, particularly to a Gen that grew up where a photo was at least worth as much as a good text and where verbal communication is replaced through visual – embrace it for the sake of our short attention span
VISIBILITY : not enough to speak a language – if you don‘t have any listeners.
Think about your website and online presence like a GenYer thinks about their social profile. Key Question: is this shareable?
Taking C21QMR to the 21st century – competitive advantage of those, who go onto this journey and are willing to revolutionise the industry
But how do you know which one is the right one for you? Understanding the CV of a GenYer
My CV is not an exception – ist GenY norm
2 Points:
Demistify the new internationalism
Explain what all the job hopping is about
Gen of world travellers
Cheap
Digital natives
Not necessarily cultural experts – maybe just very flexible: also good for QMR
Next point: Job hopping
We don‘t have to subscribe to one role model
I can choose what I want to do
and dont have to choose what I want to be
- I can be a singer – and a scientist and go back to being a singer
I dont have to take on one role and subordinate my other facettes and become a singing scientist
BUT
Doesnt mean that a GenY CV is totally random – you don‘t even have to read between the lines
You have to do what a Quali is good at – cluster and find a pattern
When you look at mine, you can see that I am fascinated by other cultures and identities
To get into a relationship , you need to understand the other person: Decode GenY behaviour
Great at self-marketing
Low in intrinsic motivation
External validation = my currency
Show empathy and be the bigger person
GenY is often too afraid to ask to for the feedback they need
Whether that is a junior or someone who quickly jumped the ranks
Open feedback channels are important to minimise frustration and compensate
GenY – commitment problem – I think because of the way the view the relationship between work and life
Discussing the concept of Work Life Balance
Applicable in an age where spatial and time restrictions don‘t impact on working hours?
Can‘t seperate private and work persona – everything is mixed up and ist all me
because in order to balance something you need to separate it first and I cannot separate my private and professional life
Not a work life balance but rather a
The Work Life Stew –
With qmr it has always been mixed up Late focus groups, etc.
But – doesnt have to be a dealbreaker with GenY but can become a trademark
..but you need to give some flexibility in return
And consider the work-life relationship more holisitically
So in conflict management you are tasked with uncovering pain points in order to find entry points to help parties to improve their relationship.
With generation Y and the Y industry it is not actually that hard: the foundation is already there
And at the end of the day, both will benefit from it

So maybe this can be the generation that reminds us WHY it is that we do things the way we do
