Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry
Collecting Soiled Linen
 House maid and room boy should strip linens from beds and
areas and put them on to the linen chute or on to the soiled
linen carts stored on each floor pantry.
 Staff should never use any guest linen for any cleaning purpose.
 The house boys should go for frequent rounds on each floors to
collect the soiled linen from the linen chute or on to each floor
pantry.
 Supervisors should make sure that the soiled linens doesn't
pileup on floor pantry which may cause further soil or damage
as there are chances that people may walk on them.
Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry
Transport Soiled Linen to Laundry department
 Linen will send to laundry either hand-carried or using cart
 The housemen should make sure that the laundry items are not dragged on
the floor this may further damage or soil the laundry.
 Runner who carry linen are not allowed to drag the linen on the floor because
it can cause accident
Sorting of Linen and Uniforms
 The laundry sorting area of the hotel should be large enough to buffer one day
worth of laundry and these sorting of laundry should not cause interfere with other
laundry activities.
 Sort linen and uniforms according to their stains, size, type, color etc.
 It is important to prevent damage to the linen and prolonged the life of the linen.
 Sorting by degree of soiling: lightly, moderately and heavily soilded
• Heavily soiled items required heavy-duty wash formula and need longer washing
time.
• Lightly (bed sheet) & moderated (pillow cases) soiled linen are washed with
gentler formula and in fewer washing cycle.
Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry
Sorting of Linen and Uniforms
 Benefit of sorting
- will make the cleaning process more efficient & maintain the quality of linen.
- If not linen will over processed & cause wastage of detergent, energy, water
and damaged to the linen and fabrics.
 Sorting by colour of linen
The white items must be washed separately from other items.
Coloured should not be washed with chlorine bleach.
Newly coloured linen should be washed separately.
 Sorting by linen type
Different fiber, weaves and colour required different cleaning formula and
washing methods.
It can ensure the right temperature and formula for the fabrics.
For example: wool requires mild formula and gentle agitation.
 After the linens and uniforms are sorted properly the laundry staff collects the
batches of laundry and load them to the washers.
 It is also a good process to always weigh the laundry items before loading
them to the washers, this will ensure that the washers are not overloaded and
help to run them in the optimum operation condition.
 If required the soiled linens are treated to remove stains before the washing
process.
 To reduce operational cost nowadays hotels uses chemicals ( bleaches,
detergents, softeners etc.) while washing process to remove stains instead of
treating laundry items separately before washing.
Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry
Washing and Dry cleaning
Knowledge - WATER
-water is the major chemical used in the laundry process.
-perfectly safe to drink water may not be suitable for washing items, so chemicals
can be added to water to help it clean better.
-Many OPL operators recommend testing the laundry’s water supply to identify
potential problems.
Knowledge - DETERGENTS
 These chemicals aid soil removal and act as antibacterial agents and fabric
softeners.
 Builders or alkalis are often added to synthetic detergents to soften water and
remove oils and grease.
 Built soap are generally used on heavily soiled fabrics: pure soaps are reserved
for more lightly soiled items.
Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry
Washing and Dry cleaning
Knowledge - BRIGHTENERS
 Brighteners keep fabrics looking new and colours close to their original shade.
 These chemicals are often premixed with detergents and soaps.
Hotel Laundry Operation
Drying
 After the washing cycle is completed the washed items are dried on the dryer.
 The drying times and temperature vary considerable according to the type of linen /
cloths.
 As with washers, it is important to have sufficient capacity and automatic controls.
 Do not switch on the dryer before using because it will cause hot spots and can
damage the fabric.
 Tumble dryer is the most popular. It has two drums, the first drum produces the hot
air and the second spin the linens after washing.
 There are three levels of temperature: low, medium and high.
 This dryer also has a time controller that is from 0 to 60 minutes.
 After the drying process, it must be followed by cooling process to avoid damage and
wrinkling.
 It will also help the workers to take the linens out easily because cooling process can
decrease the heat of the linens.
Hotel Laundry Operation
Folding of Linen and Uniforms
 Even though a lot of flooding of linens are now automated, the hotels still do a lot
of folding by hand.
 While folding the linens the laundry attendants should also look for any damages
occurred to them while the laundry process.
 The folded items are then stored and stacked properly according to batches.
 The finished laundry items should latest rest for 24hrs. as this will increase their
life.
Refer print out notes
STAIN REMOVAL
Alcoholic beveraged

• sponge with liquid detergent & rinse.
• Put a few drop of vinegar in rinse water.

  • 5. Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry Transport Soiled Linen to Laundry department  Linen will send to laundry either hand-carried or using cart  The housemen should make sure that the laundry items are not dragged on the floor this may further damage or soil the laundry.  Runner who carry linen are not allowed to drag the linen on the floor because it can cause accident Sorting of Linen and Uniforms  The laundry sorting area of the hotel should be large enough to buffer one day worth of laundry and these sorting of laundry should not cause interfere with other laundry activities.  Sort linen and uniforms according to their stains, size, type, color etc.  It is important to prevent damage to the linen and prolonged the life of the linen.  Sorting by degree of soiling: lightly, moderately and heavily soilded • Heavily soiled items required heavy-duty wash formula and need longer washing time. • Lightly (bed sheet) & moderated (pillow cases) soiled linen are washed with gentler formula and in fewer washing cycle.
  • 6. Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry Sorting of Linen and Uniforms  Benefit of sorting - will make the cleaning process more efficient & maintain the quality of linen. - If not linen will over processed & cause wastage of detergent, energy, water and damaged to the linen and fabrics.  Sorting by colour of linen The white items must be washed separately from other items. Coloured should not be washed with chlorine bleach. Newly coloured linen should be washed separately.  Sorting by linen type Different fiber, weaves and colour required different cleaning formula and washing methods. It can ensure the right temperature and formula for the fabrics. For example: wool requires mild formula and gentle agitation.
  • 7.  After the linens and uniforms are sorted properly the laundry staff collects the batches of laundry and load them to the washers.  It is also a good process to always weigh the laundry items before loading them to the washers, this will ensure that the washers are not overloaded and help to run them in the optimum operation condition.  If required the soiled linens are treated to remove stains before the washing process.  To reduce operational cost nowadays hotels uses chemicals ( bleaches, detergents, softeners etc.) while washing process to remove stains instead of treating laundry items separately before washing. Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry Washing and Dry cleaning Knowledge - WATER -water is the major chemical used in the laundry process. -perfectly safe to drink water may not be suitable for washing items, so chemicals can be added to water to help it clean better. -Many OPL operators recommend testing the laundry’s water supply to identify potential problems.
  • 8. Knowledge - DETERGENTS  These chemicals aid soil removal and act as antibacterial agents and fabric softeners.  Builders or alkalis are often added to synthetic detergents to soften water and remove oils and grease.  Built soap are generally used on heavily soiled fabrics: pure soaps are reserved for more lightly soiled items. Hotel Laundry Operation and Laundry Washing and Dry cleaning Knowledge - BRIGHTENERS  Brighteners keep fabrics looking new and colours close to their original shade.  These chemicals are often premixed with detergents and soaps.
  • 9. Hotel Laundry Operation Drying  After the washing cycle is completed the washed items are dried on the dryer.  The drying times and temperature vary considerable according to the type of linen / cloths.  As with washers, it is important to have sufficient capacity and automatic controls.  Do not switch on the dryer before using because it will cause hot spots and can damage the fabric.  Tumble dryer is the most popular. It has two drums, the first drum produces the hot air and the second spin the linens after washing.  There are three levels of temperature: low, medium and high.  This dryer also has a time controller that is from 0 to 60 minutes.  After the drying process, it must be followed by cooling process to avoid damage and wrinkling.  It will also help the workers to take the linens out easily because cooling process can decrease the heat of the linens.
  • 10. Hotel Laundry Operation Folding of Linen and Uniforms  Even though a lot of flooding of linens are now automated, the hotels still do a lot of folding by hand.  While folding the linens the laundry attendants should also look for any damages occurred to them while the laundry process.  The folded items are then stored and stacked properly according to batches.  The finished laundry items should latest rest for 24hrs. as this will increase their life.
