Lara Berndes has chosen a theme for her magazine photoshoots that incorporates women's rights and independence. She will portray this theme through photos of her subject India Jane Gill wearing unique, eye-catching costumes in a plain urban background setting. Lara believes female artists now include more masculine traits in their work to move away from past sexualization and prove their strength. She aims to show India looking determined and independent through R&B-inspired photos that feature costumes like fishnet tights representing femininity and rebellion and fur coats suggesting a fighting spirit.
2. Magazine Themes
• Due to myself being inspired by music videos/VIBE magazine covers/photoshoots of R&B artists like
Beyoncé and Rihanna I have chosen my theme to incorporate the rise of womens rights. I am a true
believer men and women are entitled to equal rights in every way and I feel as though Beyoncé really
showcases this in her work. For example in her music video Flawless, where Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (a
strong fighter for womens rights and feminism) defines feminism and its meaning at the beginning of the
video.

• I believe that nowadays many female artists have started to include more masculine type traits into their
music videos, in terms of costume and setting.
• This could be due to the lack of respect women have been
given in the past and how in a lot of cases (especially artists and
actress) women have been sexualised and they want to move away
from this label and prove that they are strong and independent
• My music genre is R&B and I feel this particularly shows off
this idea of women showing their independence and freedom, therefore I will be trying to focus my subject
looking determined,independent and ready.
3. My subject
• Name- India Jane Gill
• Age- 17
• Height-5’7
India has a very unique fashion sense
which links nicely to my theme. She is
mixed race which reinforces this idea of
women struggling for independence and
freedom. She was eager to be involved
once I had explained my R&B genre and
women fighting for equal rights theme
4. Settings
• My initial thoughts on a choice of setting was a urban
styled background (for example in Camden with the grafted
walls)
• However after analysing professional R&B music magazine
covers I noticed there backgrounds were no so ‘in your
face’ and a lot of the time plained coloured with the main
attention being focused on the subject who will therefore
be either wearing unique/extravargant clothing/makeup
• I personally choose to use a rather less ‘in your face’ back
setting but to use a plainer background but behind my
subject wearing unique fashionable clothing which is linked
to my theme and genre
5. A few photos of
my chosen
settings. As
said in the slide
before I wanted
a slightly urban
background but
not too
‘urbanised’, for
example like in
Camden
6. Costume
• Due to myself choosing a rather plain background I have decided to use multiple
unique and eye catching costumes. I want my costume selection to show off my
theme and genre in a unique and professional way.
• After researching I have found that the use of fishnet tights represent women as
they are a feminine type of clothing yet they also represent rebellious type
behaviour due to the torn/hole look. Therefore I think these will link to my theme
well and I tried hard to include them
• Also the use of fur coats give an
almost ‘animal’ look which can represent
a fighting attitude which also links well
with my theme
