Today’s students live their lives through technology and are using a vast range of online tools and devices to access learning materials on the go. With this in mind, The Language Centre at Queen’s has created a number of microsites using free tools available online, to support students enrolled on IWLP Level 1 language classes.
As language learning is an accumulative process, the aim of our approach is not only to support, but also encourage interaction with our language course content in between weekly classes. Our students can now listen to audio files, watch animated videos and practice reading aloud short phrases to get more familiar with the language and to reinforce what is learned in class each week. As technology lends itself very well to personalised and independent learning outside the classroom, students now work at their own pace to revise course content, making our weekly language classes more relevant, engaging and accessible to all.
Taking advantage of a range of free online tools embedded in one site, we are now able to support language learning in a more widely accessible and user friendly way than ever before. In this parallel session, we would like to share our development experiences and demonstrate just how easy it is for others to accomplish something similar, using free tools available online to everyone.

4. Insufficient practice
at speaking the
language.
Feedback from our students:
.. especially not being able to practice
what was taught on a daily basis to
reinforce and familiarize oneself with all
the new words and associated rules
when forming sentences.
Wish there was more
opportunity to practice in
between classes. would have
liked some tasks and
language games as well.
Personally I would have
liked more oral practice.
I think you can provide
more chance to practice
what I learn in the class.
More homework assignments to
encourage learning outside of class
as opposed to simply attending and
learning whatever you retained
during the class.
More diverse range
of homework.
5. WHAT: Create a suite of online support materials to supplement
face-to-face class time, supporting language learning outside of
the classroom.
WHAT?
7. WHY: Traditional teaching + Technology . . .
WHY?
• reinforces learning outside the classroom
• caters for different learning styles and levels of ability
• makes it easy for students to practice (i.e. pronunciation, listening
etc.)
• supports students who miss a class
• reduces repetition in class
• enhances motivation
8. WHY: Traditional teaching + Technology . . .
WHY?
• bridges the gap in time between semesters
• helps students acquire IT skills (alongside literacy & numeracy)
• develops digital literacy
• uses media which students are already familiar with
• is fast, ubiquitous, efficient
9. WHY: Traditional teaching + Technology . . .
WHY?
There are no materials out there that will fit your
individual students learning goals and your teaching
needs better than your own material will!!

Hinweis der Redaktion
LNS – face to face: 40 tutors & 2000+ students
LSP – computer based: 4 tutors and 101 students enrolled last year
And more recently we have our module inserts – Swedish / Dutch / German / Mandarin Chinese
http://www.qub.ac.uk/Study/Course-Finder/UG/InternationalBusinesswithaLanguage/
We started to get more and more student feedback (from LNS courses) which called for more opportunities to practice in-between weekly classes.
There are also some Institutional Drivers at play
We need to align with our Vice Chancellors “Vision 2020” strategy which calls for Departments and Schools to embrace technologies in a way that enhances the learning experience.
also, at a departmental level, there is less money to spend on things like new course books and photocopying handouts
To work more closely with all our Language Tutors to create online materials to support our LNS students, outside the classroom!
Develop a support website containing online resources and activities to reinforce topics which students cover during their 10 week language course.
Support language learning outside of the classroom.
There are many good reasons for supplementing face-to-face class time with online teaching resources.
Traditional teaching when combined with technology . . .
Universities have a responsibility to ensue that our students are digitally literate.
With an estimated 90% of UK jobs requiring some level of IT competency, preparing students for living, learning and working in a digital society is vital to their success.
There are so many useful tools available to use online (mostly free too) –
Once we had decided on the type of activities and resources we wanted to create, to supplement each of the 10 weekly classes, we then choose a number of appropriate online tools which would best support our needs.
Flashcards are a very effective tool for learning new vocab because different parts of the brain are involved - instead of simply reading a definition in a dictionary, the student can see what the word means and hear what the word sounds like, at the same time.
* Quizlet built-in text to speech languages include 18 languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Arabic, Finnish, Swedish, Dutch, Greek, Turkish, Romanian, Polish.
No ads on your sets - Students won't see ads while studying any content you create on Quizlet.
Image Uploading - Add your own images (pictures, diagrams, maps, etc.) to your study sets.
Voice recording - Record your own audio for your students, so they can hear your voice anytime.
Quizlet Live Customisations - Create your own teams of students, encourage continuous game play and add audio to the competition.
Unlimited classes - Create classes for as many groups as you want to organise your students and content.
Class progress - Keep up to date with student activity on Quizlet and monitor their progress.
SoundCloud: By using the playlist feature of SoundCloud, we could upload and group individual lines of dialogue to form a conversation or dialogue, which could then be further enhanced by using different images for each line of dialogue.
These playlists were then embedded into out Canvas content pages.
PRO Account = Double your upload time | Additional stats including plays by country | Pin tracks and playlists to the top of your profile with Spotlight
PRO Unlimited = Upload without limits | See which cities your listeners are in | See the web pages and apps your tracks are played from
GoAnimate lets you create animated videos and add your narration to each scene.
The visual nature of animated videos makes the content much more memorable.
We used GoAnimate extensively to create mini scenarios, using native speakers to record voice overs for each character (in Audacity).

VideoScribe is another great tool that allows you to create engaging animated videos quickly and easily.
Sometimes referred to as whiteboard animation, VideoScribe lets you tell a story with pictures and audio.
We paid £299 for perpetual licence 3 years ago!

We currently using a free hosted version of Canvas VLE (which is in my option, a richer platform for language learning than other VLEs like Moodle or Blackboard), to present supplementary materials to support our students taking IWLP courses/classes.
With Canvas, we can easily embed our Quizlet flashcards, Soundcloud dialogues which we create, YouTube videos, (all free tools for creating materials).
GoAnimate and VideoScibe are the only tools that we pay a small license fee for in order to create rich engaging multimedia resources for language students.
So for very little to no cost at all (apart from development time required by staff), we can create very rich supplementary materials for our students, which any Language Centre with access to the internet can also do.
There are a number of individual topics available which relate to the materials covered in our weekly classes. In between class, students can
listen to the audio files …
watch the animated videos …
and practice reading aloud short phrases to get more familiar with the language and to reinforce what we learn in class each week.
They can also complete the quizzes and activities to test their knowledge of topics covered in class!
