2. • Agli inizi degli anni ’80 ho avuto il
piacere di lavorare a Mogadiscio,
perciò mi trovai nelle condizioni di
poter adottare un neonato che era
rimasto orfano.
• Quando tornai in Italia con un
pargolo dalla pelle nera la mia vita
diventò più movimentata …
“Bambini venite qui, guardate che
atto di carità questa signora, invece
di prendere un cane ha preso un
bambino …” Così fui accolta in un
bel mezzogiorno di sole in un
ristorante sul lago di Vico. C’era una
festa di comunione e una madre
voleva a suo modo dimostrarmi così
la sua simpatia …
In the early 80s I had the pleasure
of working in Mogadishu, so I
found myself in the position to
adopt a Somali baby who was
orphaned.
When I returned to Italy with a little
child who has a black skin, my life
became more hectic ... "Children
come here, look at what act of
charity this lady made, instead of
taking a dog, she took a child ..." So I
was welcomed in a nice sunny noon
in a restaurant on the lake “Vico”.
There was a communion party and a
mother wanted to show me in this
way her sympathy ...
… Prognosi del rilascio: “Sano come
un pesce”.
When my son grew able to
understand, when these episodes of
intolerance took place, my husband
and I talked quietly with him trying to
educate him to react with irony.
Now in 2017, certainly, Italian
doctors have done a lot of experience
with non-EU and when they visit an
African child they are no longer
obsessed by the search for parasites,
as they used to do with my son. We
passed an entire week closed in a
room in the department of infectious
diseases of the “Ospedale del
Bambino Gesù”, to which I had come
to have a stitch put on a little cut my
son had suffered falling ... Prognosis
of the release: "Healthy as a fish."
4. Niente in paragone della prognosi di
“parassiti nel cervello” fatta
dall’Istituto di Igiene Mentale e
scritta su una radiografia alla testa
che conservo ancora. Ero disperata
. Confesso che, dopo, per anni ho
evitato di fare visitare mio figlio da
medici.
Nothing compared with the
prognosis of "parasites in the brain"
made by the Istituto Superiore di
Igiene Mentale and written on an X-
ray done to my son’ head, that I still
have. I was desperate and I was
going to subscribe to the association
of families of disabled children,
when I had the good idea to seek
the advice of the Institute of
Tropical Diseases. "Parasites in the
brain? Never heard of it. But it was
the X-ray that was badly done. " I
confess that after that , for years I
avoided taking my son to the
doctor’s.
5. Mio figlio era nato nell’83 e in quegli
psicologa dell’asilo d’infanzia
comunale che frequentava che,
dopo avermi fatto promettere che
non avrei detto niente alla scuola,
mi avvisava che gli altri bambini si
prendevano gioco di mio figlio, lo
chiamavano “stronzino” e
“negretto” e lo maltrattavano. Mi
consigliava perciò di metterlo in una
scuola internazionale. Devo dire che
io ero già molto infastidita dalle
madri che, per dimostrarmi la loro
simpatia, lo chiamavano sempre e
solo “cioccolatino” e mi elogiavano
in continuazione per il “bell’atto di
carità” che avevo fatto.
My son was born in '83 and in those
years in Rome there were not yet
children from Africa. So one day I
was called by the lady psychologist
of the municipal childhood garden
that my son attended, who told me
( after making me promise I would
not say anything to the school),
that the other children made fun of
my son, they called him "little shit"
and " nigger "and mistreated him.
She, therefore, advised me that it
would be better for him to attend
an international school. I must say
that I was already very annoyed by
the mothers, who, in order to show
me their sympathy, called him
always just "chocolate candy" and
praised me all the time for "fine act
of charity" that I had done.
6. Perciò mio figlio ha frequentato fino a
11 anni una scuola internazionale. E’
stato un classico esempio di quando
da un male nasce un bene. A 11 anni
scuola media italiana. In quella
scuola media statale definita “scuola
polo” perché espressamente
dedicata all’insegnamento per
bambini non di madre lingua
italiana.
So my son attended, up to 11 years,
an international school. It 'was a
classic example of when a bad thing
becomes good. At age of 11 my son
came out bilingual and his fluent
English , later, allowed him to find a
good job immediately.
I say nothing about the havoc that
the arrival of an African child
caused in the Italian secondary
school . And I had many bad
experiences in that “Scuola Media”
defined "pole school", because it
was expressly dedicated to teaching
children not to speak Italian as
mother tongue.
7. Erano quasi tutti bambini nati a
Roma, ma che, per una
barbara legge, non potevano
avere la cittadinanza italiana.
Se poi i genitori perdevano il
lavoro e non avevano dunque
più il diritto di soggiorno,
questi bambini non potevano
sostenere gli esami finali di
terza media e ricevere il
diploma.
The children were almost
all born in Rome, but
for a barbarous law
they could not have
Italian citizenship. If
the parents lost their
jobs and had therefore
no longer the right of
residence, these
children could not take
the middle school final
examinations and
receive a diploma.
8. In quella scuola, detta
“internazionale” i professori
non avevano nessuna
formazione specifica e perciò
cercavano di sopperire alle
loro carenze sull’argomento
con la propria buona volontà e
con tanta immaginazione, ma
come si sa, l’immaginazione,
se non si basa su fattori
culturali si restringe ad avere
come pilastri portanti gli
stereotipi e i pregiudizi.
In that state school, called
"international" the
teachers had no special
training, and so they tried
to make up for their
deficiencies in these
subject with their own
good will and with so much
imagination … but as you
know if the imagination is
not based on cultural
factors, it risks having as
pillars stereotypes and
prejudices.
9. Ero costretta a sentire le lamentele
degli insegnanti che ci
raccontavano, spesso con amarezza,
i loro tentativi falliti di insegnare a
bambini che rifiutavano di accettare
che si parlasse in classe dei loro
paesi di origine. Perché uno degli
aspetti del razzismo che si crede
“solidarietà” è quello di ricordare
continuamente alla persona di un
altro Paese la propria origine. C’era
una bambina cilena che non aveva
voluto leggere ad alta voce un brano
di un autore cileno. Una bambina
brasiliana non aveva voluto
prendere parte alla creazione di un
costume di carnevale: “Loro il
carnevale ce l’hanno nel sangue”,
diceva la sua prof.
These good teachers, used to tell
me , often bitterly of their failed
attempts to teach children who
refused to accept to talk in their
class about their countries of
origin. Because one of the aspects
of racism that is believed
"solidarity" is to carry on
reminding people of their
origin. There was a Chilean girl who
did not want to read aloud a
passage from a Chilean author. A
Brazilian girl did not want to take
part in creating a carnival costume:
"They have carnival in their blood,"
the teachers usually said.
10. Alla fine dell’anno scolastico la
scuola organizzò un grande
spettacolo in un grande teatro di
Roma a cui era presente il
sindaco e vari personaggi della
politica e della cultura. Gli attori
erano gli alunni che
naturalmente, pur non essendo
spesso mai stati nel paese di
origine dei loro genitori, ( non
possono andarci per non
interrompere il periodo di
soggiorno in Italia), erano vestiti
con i costumi del Paese di
origine. Che bei sombreri
avevano in testa i bambini
“messicani”, non ti dico i bei
costumi dei brasiliani, o dei cinesi
…
At the end of his school year, the
school organized a great show in a
great theater of Rome, where was
present the mayor and various
personalities from politics and
culture. The actors were, of course,
the pupils. Although the most of
them had never been in the
country of origin of their parents,
( the cannot go there because they
must not to interrupt the period of
their stay in Italy), they were
dressed in the costumes of the
foreign country. What beautiful
sombreros had the "Mexicans"
children!
11. A mio figlio, a torso nudo fu messo
tamburo.
Per la cronaca quella preside fu
nominata subito dopo assessore
alla cultura del Comune di Roma.
My son, with a bare brest, had
in his hands a drum. But he
didn’t want to play it.
Among other things, in the years
when I lived in Somalia I have
never seen a Somali drumming.
For the record, after this show
the Head teacher was named
councilor for the culture for the
City of Rome.
