6. The bigger picture – moving into the future
According to a 2018 LinkedIn Workplace
Learning research report:
“Today’s talent developer is being asked to
balance competing demands from
executives, managers, and employees.
They must play a critical role in shaping
future workforce strategy, while delivering
hyper-relevant content to support
employee needs of today, and cater these
vast efforts to a multi-generational
workforce with varied learning
preferences.”

8. 21st
century education & future of work
Gen Ys’ and Zs’
• By 2020 will make up more than 50% of the
workforce
• By 2030 will be 75% of the workforce.
Gen Alphas’
• By 2030 will make up 20% of the
global workforce.
9. 21st
century education & future of work
Due to technological changes, globally by 2030:
• 1B new entrants to education.
• 1B workers will need to be retrained.
• Freelance workforce 50% of the workforce.
• More “job-hopping” and greater pursuit of learning
“new skills”.
• Concept of learning community will have greater
importance.
Currently 36% of global organizations can’t find
employees with the skills they need!
11. Mobile learning
• Slowly gaining traction.
• Mobile devices are a way of
life.
• Easy to create mobile learning
that’s accessible any time/ any
place.
• Short chunks of content,
video, quizzes and polls and
performance support tools are
effective.
14. Video-based learning
• Can now be produced easily and
inexpensively.
• Can be quickly uploaded and
shared on a YouTube channel,
intranet site or SharePoint page.
• Can be used for collaboration too.
• Can be fun! – use interesting
personalities and approaches,
music, special effects, etc.
16. Social (informal) learning
Social learning provides opportunities for learners to collaborate,
discuss, share and learn informally within an office or globally
across an organization.
17. Poll question
What trends are you or your organization currently
using in learning and development?
a) Mobile learning
b) Video-based learning
c) Social learning
d) None of the above
e) Not sure
19. Gamification
• The concept of using game design
elements, game mechanics and game
thinking in non-game contexts.
• Includes components like fixed rules,
ranking, 3D environments, rewards/
consequences, leaderboards, levels,
challenges, quests, etc.
• Uses our natural desire for social
connection, learning, mastery,
competition, achievement and status.
21. Microlearning
• “Chunks” or “nuggets” of learning
• Focuses on ONE objective.
• Low effort.
• Can solve and improve issues/situations at work.
• Can be any format.
• Not expensive.
• Instantly available.
• Should be searchable.
• Typically 3 to 7 minutes in length.
Chopping up a course into smaller bits is NOT
microlearning.
24. Personalized learning
Personalized learning technology:
• Provides a unique, highly focused
learning path for each learning.
• Tailors the learning experience
based on learners’ strengths,
weaknesses and learning pace.
• Doesn’t necessarily adapt the path
as the learner’s progress.
25. Adaptive learning
• A technology-based method that uses data and
analytics to adapt the learning path.
• Adapts and modifies learning for each learner in
response to their performance.
• Focuses specifically on what learner needs to know.
26. Poll question
What trends are you or your organization currently
using in learning and development?
a) Gamification
b) Microlearning
c) Personalized/adaptive learning
d) None of the above
e) Not sure
28. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• A category of technologies designed
to perform tasks by simulating human
intelligence.
• Can perform tasks requiring human
brainpower, but usually more quickly
and comprehensively.
• Can take over time-consuming chores
– can do the heavy lifting so we can
apply our energies to what we do
best.
29. Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality
• Uses software and hardware to create immersive
environments.
• Augmented Reality (AR) overlays virtual objects on
the real-world environment.
• Virtual Reality (VR) immerses users in a fully artificial
environment.
30. Augmented Reality (AR)
• Puts the learner is a real
environment with artificial
enhancements.
• Layers virtual information,
graphics or audio or all of the
above on top of a learner’s view
of a real world situation.
• Example: Pokemon Go
• Will become increasingly
important.
33. Virtual Reality (VR)
• VR is a computer-generated version of
our reality.
• Puts the learner in a completely
artificial environment – total
immersion.
• Can practices skills without real-world
risk.
• Uses a head mounted display (HMD)
34. Virtual Reality (VR) example
A traumatic brain injured patient walks through a virtual reality scenario
36. Mixed Reality (MR)
• Hybrid of AR and VR.
• Not only overlays but
anchors virtual objects to
the real world allowing the
user to interact with the
virtual objects.
• Needs more processing
power.
• Still in the
proof-of-concept phase;
not commercial available
yet.
38. Poll question
What trends are you or your organization currently
using in learning and development?
a) Artificial Intelligence (AI)
b) Augmented Reality (AR)
c) Virtual Reality (VR)
d) None of the above
e) Not sure
39. Food for Thought…
“Today’s learning is about “flow”, not “instruction” and helping bring
learning to people throughout their digital experience.
Its imperative that L&D focus on “experience design”, “design
thinking” “the development of employee journey maps: and much
more experimental, data driven solutions in the flow of work.
The job of L&D and HR is to understand what employee’s jobs are,
learn about the latest tools and techniques to drive learning and
performance and then apply them to work in a modern, relevant and
cost-effective way.
We’ve been doing this for decades, and now we just have to learn to
do it again – with a vastly new set of technologies and experiences.”
Josh Bersin, leading industry analyst and founder of Bersin by Deloitte.
