1. Daniel’s Prophecies - the 70 weeks Laindon Bible Class 27 th August 2008, SJIF

8. The prophecy itself “ Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. The ‘air of expectation’ in Jesus’ day “ Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled , and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” Mark 1 v 14-15 “ And as the people were in expectation , and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not ;” Luke 3 v 15 “ Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly .” John 10 v 24 “ And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ … And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ , nor Elias, neither that prophet?” John 1 v 20,25 They knew the signs but were still not ready , are we?

16. Relating these six matters to Christ Covering for iniquity provided “ reconciliation” = Heb. kaphar = to cover (as Noah’s ark) “… reconciled to God by the death of his Son…by whom we have now received the atonement.” Romans 5 v 10-11 “ to make reconciliation for iniquity” End to sin offerings under law “ sins” = also translated “sin offering” “ But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” Hebrews 10 v 12 (also Hebrews 9 v 26 ) “ to make an end of sins” Conclusion of Judah’s transgression “ finish” = Heb. kala = to restrict, hold back, prohibit “ Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.” Matthew 23 v 32 “ to finish the transgression”

17. Relating these six matters to Christ Anointing with Holy Spirit & receipt of Spirit nature “ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor…” Luke 4 v 18 (also Acts 2 v 33 ) “ to anoint the most Holy ” Law and prophets fulfilled “ seal up” = Heb. chatham = make an end (parallels 2 nd matter) “ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” Matthew 5 v 17 “ to seal up the vision and prophecy” God’s righteousness declared, justification available “ Whom God hath set forth… to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past… that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” Romans 3 v 25-26 “ to bring in everlasting righteousness”
