This is a project that was carried out to find methods and possible ways to implement a waste management system in Sri Lanka especially for urban areas.
This is the presentation and the report is in the following link
https://www.slideshare.net/Lahiru_Dilshan/waste-management-project-proposal-for-sri-lanka
3. Future waste generation in Colombo district
• The waste generation rate has been significantly increasing through
out the past years
• Meethotamulla incident taking over 30 lives and destroying over
100 houses.
4. AIM
Establish an effective solid waste management system for
Sri Lanka which suits the social and economic behaviour
of the country and implement a solid waste management
plant to contribute to the country’s economy
5. OBJECTIVES
• Initiate an efficient solid waste collecting system by evading infirmities
in the traditional system.
• Establish a waste filtering plant
• increase the contribution and involvement of the public to the system
• Seek available options to generate an income
6.
7. Structure of solid waste management system
Waste collection and transfer system
Waste storage system
Waste processing system
Selling and
disposal system
8. Waste collection and transfer system
Solid waste management deserves a bigger focus, especially as a
country which depends largely on tourism.
Ecological Feasibility
• Minimal health risks would arise with daily waste collection.
• Daily traveling waste trucks in streets
• When the collected frequency reduces, the risk of infections and skin
diseases, exists to the neighborhood.
• Waste pooling sites will carry the same risks to the area.
9. Social Feasibility
• Daily garbage collection and door to door garbage collection will
have a better public convenience
• When the collected frequency reduces, people tend to dump
garbage illegally, due to the available personal storage capacity.
• Waste pooling sites would be useful
10. Financial Feasibility
• Automated collection may not be feasible
• Door to door collection would be the most expensive method
• practically impossible to collect garbage daily
• When collecting frequency is reduced, more transportation capacity will be
essential
• Waste pooling sites would be the most economical

25. SWOT
Strengths
• Garbage is freely available, and the amount will keep on increasing.
• The government will be supportive for the initiation.
• Willingness of recycling plants to buy sorted waste as material.
Weaknesses
• Quality of the recyclable waste being up to the standard
• Level of cleanliness required
26. Opportunities
• Recycling plants are already available to buy sorted wasted
• Municipal councils are seeking solutions on dumping garbage
• Probability of expansion to cover other provinces
Threats
• Health care of the workers
• Dumping hazardous waste.
• Highly depended on selling sorted waste.
Hinweis der Redaktion
-Waste management has become a major issue in Sri Lanka. Due to
-The country is facing a crisis
-Piles of garbage becoming bigger, requiring more space day by day, causing many serious issues
-considerable percentage of waste is burnt openly or often disposed in unregulated dumps. These unethical practices result in severe health and environmental consequences. Most recent being the
-This shows that the country is in desperate need of a proper waste management system.
-What if we could find a way to mitigate these negative effects while generating an income, which contributes to the growth of the economy
this depicts, on methods for improving the sorting processes, and new beneficial steps to take for recyclable and unrecyclable waste.
-As you can see Western province accounts for almost 60% of the total waste generation in sri lanka.
So this makes it the perfect place to initiate a solution.
Mainly there 4 sections in this process as this. First one iswaste collection and transfer – which is used to transport waste from collecting points to the sorting plants and from municipal councils
Second one is
Waste storage system – that is used to separately store unsorted waste and sorted waste in the manner of reducing the environmental impact
Then
Waste processing system – which is the core of the project, that sorted out the components of the waste under proper treatments
Finally
Sorted out waste is sold and other non-recyclable waste moved onto the landfilling
-In order to protect natural beauty of water bodies and forest reserves
-Would keep on causing bad odor, every single day
-Excessive resources being used to collect small amounts of garbage, will compromise the efficiency of the system
-Improper waste disposal, leads to blocked drains, contaminated water, infections and diseases
-Since people can get rid of their garbage whenever they want
For the country at the moments due to the higher financial requirement.
We can prioritize the level of requirement and proceed as daily, thrice a week and twice a week.
.
Here is the money and material flow in the garbage collection and soring plant, then to landfilling and incineration.
Waste collectors give money to the consumers and also, ‘polluter pay method’, waste generator gives money to the collector to remove the waste.
These material moves to recycler through sorting plant and non-recyclable material send to land filling.
Also that costs because transportation and also there will be land filling taxes. This legal states will cause to reduce the direct land fillig and tends to give waste to the sorting plants.
Positive sorting – identify and remove desired fraction of waste
(Eddy current – separate ferrous material)
Positive sorting is done by machines and technology involves it a lot. But negative sorting invovlves
Negative sorting – identify and remove non-desired fraction of waste
(eliminate plastic and polyethene – without property)
This is the typical process in sorting plant.
When consider about the storage, the waste should separated as treated, temporary and unprocessed and also hazardous materials should be stored separately as e-waste.
This is the estimation for the sorting plant we taken from the Chinese manufacturer who manufacture waste processing machines.
So that the conceptual land plan is as this.
Incoming and outgoing waste are monitored and stored, processd and sell to the recyclers.
The environmental effects such as vibration and noise, odor produced from waste should maintain
Safety of the workers should be there
The disposal of the waste.
Waste is send to sellers who are registered in Central Environmental Authority.
Bilateral aggrement could gurantee the sales of product
Good Evening Everyone
I’m the finance manager of the project.
What I see in this project is simply expressed. You invest for our future and we get something in return which is very valuable. Which is “THE LIFE”.
As other managers stated, waste is a huge issue
And question arises, how we dispose waste environmentally friendly
For that, we need funds for the implementation of the systematic process
First segment of financial systematic process is the market analysis
We have conducted two public awareness programs within 3 months of time. This figure clearly indicates that 90% of public is aware about the situation and they are willing to involve in the project.
We have selected western province to establish the waste sorting plant
The success of market survey to inform the public
Public awareness about waste management has been increased significantly
The second segment: Estimated Budget
We expect a total estimated budget of 3.8 Million dollars
All the data was taken through quotations
Profit and Loss estimation has been calculated for first 10 years
It gives an average profit of 0.76 million dollars per year
Estimated net cash flow increment clearly indicates how effectively this business is profitable and sustainable in the selected market region
Estimated net present values has been estimated for first 10 years,
Positive Net Present Value at the end of 10 years with 12% discount factor
It takes 6-7 years to archive back what we invested. (calculated using discounted pay back method)
IRR rate is 21.51 which is well ahead cost of capital
Which concludes financial stability is acceptable for the business within first 10 years
-Since we are addressing a national issue
-recycling plants are seeking specific standard before buying the materials. Since we depend upon the collected waste, we might not be able to keep on providing material in the same quality.
-Since we use only water as cleaning, we might loose some of the recycling agents.
Hazardous dumping Should be well designed and closely overlooked
If the quality of the material did not reach the requirement, recycling plants might refrain from purchasing
