The Galileo mission sent an orbiter to study Jupiter and its moons beginning in 1995. It carried several scientific instruments including an imaging system, spectrometers to analyze composition, and instruments to measure particles and magnetic fields. Over its 8 year mission, Galileo provided new insights into Jupiter's atmosphere and magnetosphere as well as the potentially habitable moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
