Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
(…) My head is bloody, but unbowed.
(…) the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
(…) I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

13. Interview: François Pienaar on
Nelson Mandela
Every time I meet Madiba, his humility is just so striking, he’s got such
a common touch with people. He makes you feel at ease, he makes
you feel important. And he takes time, and that is such a wonderful
virtue. Every time I leave Madiba’s presence, it stands out to my mind
that he is such a humble person.
We adopted a motto “One team, one country », because we realized
that this competition was for everyone in South Africa, and to do well,
we needed to make everyone in South Africa proud. We
underestimated how proud it would make South Africa. And during
the rugby world cup, my phone would ring, and it would be Madiba,
wanting to check, to find out what’s happening, is the team focused,
are they ok, are the guys cool, and that to me is just amazing. He had
the time and the presence of mind to phone. And that meant so much,
it’s a small thing but it meant a lot.
