1. Comenius School Project
LEGENDS OF MY TOWN
2011 - 2013
Report on meeting in Zagreb
In August 2011 our school started a new Comenius project “Legends of my town”.
The first meeting of all partners, which are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Latvia,
Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey took place in Zagreb, the capital of
Croatia. Our host was Privatna jezično-informatička gimnazija "Svijet"- the school of
the project coordinator.
We took a plane via Munich and we arrived in Zagreb on 18th October. The next day
we went to Varaždin, a little town situated in the north of Zagreb. We were really
delighted with its beautiful, baroque architecture. It was a sunny day so we were
walking along the charming streets, looking at the town hall, the castle and many
others baroque buildings. We got to know that Varaždin was the capital of Croatia in
13th century.
The second day we spent at school located in the block of flats in the very centre of
Zagreb. In the beginning the representatives of all countries presented themselves,
their schools and towns. Then we talked about future plans and cooperation.
On 21st October we went sightseeing Zagreb, its new districts and the historical part
of the city with beautiful, gothic Zagreb Cathedral and St. Mark’s Church. On the roof
of this church, tiles are laid so that they represent the coat of arms of Zagreb and
Kingdom of Croatia. We also visited very interesting Mirogoj Cemetery surrounded by
the high wall with the towers. There you can find the graves of many famous Croatian
people. In the evening we took part in the special dinner, with the presence of the
folk music group. The members of the group gave us red hearts which are the
symbols of Zagreb.
Zagreb is situated at the base of the mountain range called Medvednica. On 22 nd
October we went there by bus to see the highest peak of it – Sljeme- and a skiing
slope. To our surprise the mountain was covered with a thick layer of the snow. So in
October , in such warm country like Croatia, we could play with snow balls and make
a snowman. On the southeastern edges of the mountain there is a medieval castle
called Medvedgrad, which is the setting for one of Croatian legends.
The next day we came back home.
