7. What This Module is About
This module is about the various artworks made by ancient, classical and medieval
times, even before humans learned how to read and write, as was manifested by different
archeological discoveries from the different parts of the world. It has an instructional
information about the process of understanding the works and display of art that made in
different times as art traditions; it will provide the learner a further understanding and
recognition of the art elements and principles usage and processes made done on an artwork,
especially the differences and uniqueness of art characteristics indifferent periods. It will make
the learner realize that art played an integral part in the development of whole different eras
in accordance to its historical events, tradition and other external phenomena. It will lead to a
learnable idea to reflect on and study the mood or message given by the selected artworks.
In this way the learner will be guided and can apply his acquired knowledge from this module
in preparing or producing his own artwork in the future. Analyzing, Creating and Evaluating
will be part of the closure activity of this module.
This module is substantial for more understanding of the evolution of art.

and interactive activities in lieu to actual classroom setting. This may help you continue
studying Western Classical Art Traditions at all costs that hinders your learning. In this way, it

11. Lesson Ancient, Classical and
Medieval Art Traditions
1
Every civilization that was brought to the world made its distinct art forms
unintentionally. It produces significant relics that connects with another culture from generation
to generation.
Ancient Art (2,500,000 BCE – 400 CE) or Pre-historic Art Era is classified into three
periods: Paleolithic (Old Stone Age), Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), and Neolithic (New Stone
Age). It is the earliest art that are produced in preliterate or culture beginnings somewhere in
late geological history and mostly continuing until the culture find its way some kind of writing
system or methods of record-keeping.
Classical Art (5th
to 4th
BC) was in early civilization that developed in simultaneously
in an Era of Egyptian Era, Greek Era and Roman Era. It is an art of antiquity that covers a
wide variety of styles and mediums ranging from painting, sculpture, and architecture.
Classicism refers to generally to a high regard as a set of standards as elite.
Egyptian Art Era mainly contributed in the development of art in religion, science and
technology of the world. It is based on perfect balance because it reflects the ideal world of
gods as it provides good gifts for humanity.
Greek Art Era depicts naturalism and portrays human forms in a realistic and
automatically correct manner. It is a period of style, with careful observation in following the
mechanics of anatomy.
Roman Art Era refers to the visual art that developed in very diverse form. Embracing
and promoting art with much of innovation, to such extent sometimes it exceeds and
compromising quality but displays craftsmanship.
Medieval Art (300 AD to 1400 AD) started from the fall of Roman Empire,that evolves
as humans continue addressing the traditional and new including Biblical subjects, Christian
dogma, and Classical mythology. It introduces three periods: Byzantine Era, Romanesque
Era and Gothic Era.
Byzantine Art Era comprises the body of Christian Greek artistic products of the
Eastern Roman Empire. It was purposely made to glorify the Christian religion, filled with
spiritual symbolism, illustrates a love of splendor.
Romanesque Art Era has a vigorous style in painting and sculpture, lavishly decorated
manuscripts, and retained many basic features of Roman Architectural styles. The name
Romanesque refers to the fusion of Roman, Carolingian and Ottonian, Byzantine and local
Germanic traditions that make up the mature style. It were made in France, the style was
current in all part of Europe except those areas in Eastern Europe that preserved a full-fledged
Byzantine tradition.
Gothic Art Era developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art.it symbolizes the
transcendence of the soul, and the underlying philosophy is to create buildings of height and
light.
In this lesson, you will be taught carefully how to understand art of ancient, classical
and medieval periods by completing all the activities required.

Ancient Art (2,500,000 BCE – 400 CE) or Pre-historic Art Era is an early period
artwork made by primitive people or artist depicting their ways of life and tradition, that
somehow even made before humans learned how to read and write. It became the earliest
form of art where they initially tend to communicate to other culture and other people through
leaving remains of marks, figures and images. Mostly mediums used and they crafted their
works mainly out of stones.
Classical Art (500 to 400 BC) is generally refers to a high regard for classical
antiquity in the Western tradition, as a set of standard for taste which the classicists seek to
emulate. Artworks during this era tends to imitate human and animal forms realistically with
careful observation of mechanic anatomy. It is a period of style in basic types for the Greek
gods were devised, and these remained influential throughout antiquity.
Medieval Art (300 AD to 1400 AD) is a period of Christianity where Christian Church
influenced much of Europe and people tend to embrace religion, that started from the fall of
Roman Empire. Most of works of art are influenced in biblical or religious forms, ornamenting
churches and exuberant architectural structures.

Painting is a two-dimensional visual image created by an artist, applying colored
pigments or paints as medium using a brush; creating strokes that resulted a visual mark or a
print they established to create image. It conveys ideas of tradition and culture of the artist
that is capable of transmitting from one to another. A way of communicating with each other
and may also be for religious or ceremonial purposes.
Sculpture is a three-dimensional visual image that is made by one of four basic
processes: carving, modelling, casting and constructing or assemblage. It provides a
realistic figure made through manipulation of materials resulting in a three-dimensional object.
An idea of imitating or producing with exact three-dimensional size and form in proportion.
Architecture is an art and science of designing buildings and structures related to
environmental formation that provides shelter to live in, work in, play in and store in.

Each period or era has a distinct characteristic and differences that could tell how it
grow and evolved from one to another. A social, artistic and cultural movement that cannot be
resisted as part of life’s survival instincts. Resourcing Art as their tool in communicating and

Summary
Pre-historic Art Era are archeological discoveries through searching for clues of
understanding Stone Age Civilization and peek to the minds of primitive people finding out
their way of living.
Classical Art Era consists of three distinct art: Egyptian Art, Greek Art and Roman Art.
It has its own art distinction because it was developed in simultaneous period done through
their own civilization tradition.
Medieval Art consist of three distinct art styles: Byzantine Art, Romanesque Art and
Gothic Art. These are art styles develop through devoting and promoting Christianity as
religion. Ornamenting churches to the extent of making exuberant architectural designs.
