3. Troubleshooting by means of this network should not be limited
to a single control unit. In fact it implies diagnosis on several
control units.
Each control unit can perform checks based on the
information received from the other control units;
the use of the CAN protocol enables to simplify the
electric systems of the motorcycles, making them more
reliable;
fewer sensors are needed;
optionals can be installed without changing the electric
system of the motorcycle completely.

THE CAN NETWORK: CHARACTERISTICS AND ADVANTAGES
4. The most common version features 2
twisted wires to reduce sensitivity to
electromagnetic interferences.
The two wires are called
• CAN H
• CAN L
Each node analyses the difference
between the two signals.
CAN: Physical level
0 V corresponds to logic level 1
while 2 V to logic level 0.
This ensures signal quality
and insensitivity to noise or
interference.

5. DIAGNOSIS OF A MULTIPLEXING NETWORK
Generally, a CAN network fault may be due to:
node faults;
conductor faults;
node power supply issues.
1) CAN H/CAN L interruption
2) Short-circuit to ground - CAN H/CAN L
3) Short-circuit - CAN H CAN L
4) Short-circuit to positive - CAN H/CAN L
5) Short-circuit to ground of the two conductors
6) Short-circuit to positive of the two conductors

6. As each Bus has 2 120Ω resistances, their parallel value is 60Ω.
This means that, when connecting a multimeter to the ends of the 2 wires, the rated
value read should be 60Ω (55÷65Ω).
The checks can be carried out using:
• an ohmmeter;
• a voltmeter;
• an oscilloscope.

9. Fault analysis on the road through the LOG function
It is possible to record the tests
by using directly the DDS 2.0
software while it is performing
a diagnosis on the selected
system.
The first step consists in
choosing the 8 parameters that
you wish to analyse.
The selected parameters must be calibrated according to the device to be
analysed. Once the setting is complete, press the RECORD push-button to
start recording.

10. Why should we divide the
parameters in a group to
record the data while we are
performing a reading with
the self-diagnosis?
Logical order of reading: Dividing the parameters in logical groups allows to
display simultaneously all the data referring to a component or a system to be
tested (e.g. lambda sensors)
Analysis of the data over time: Often, the instantaneous reading does not
clearly indicate the trend of a specific parameter, and above all it does not
facilitate the comparison of several parameters read simultaneously but occurring
at different times.
Storing a case: All records are stored «forever» in a DDS 2.0 personal database,
where it is possible to retrieve the history of the analyses performed on a specific
vehicle. Even more important is the fact that such analyses represent valuable
information for comparing the data with other similar vehicles.

Keep POWER pressed for more than 3 seconds to turn
on the tool
The tool automatically recognises the type of probe
connected and displays the relevant menu with the
available functions.
The current tests with the DMT should always be considered solely to analyse
the absorption of the electric system of a motorcycle with key on OFF. Maximum
current read by this tool is 10 mA.
The current test menu includes the functions:
Ammeter, instantaneous reading of the value of the
current absorbed by the motorcycle.
Check, preliminary current absorption test on a
motorcycle in key-off status.

Prior to initiating the reading, the menu will prompt operator to check whether the
motorcycle is in the key-off status. After that, a 90 second countdown will be started
in order for the control units to perform the power latch phase
At the end of countdown, the tool starts measuring the current.

TEST CHECK
The test shows "faulty"
absorptions.
It is necessary to check the
motorcycle electric system to find out
the cause for the excessive current
absorption. Try to recharge the
battery and fill in the relevant
assistance or pre-approval request on
Youtech.

What are the advantages of a standard diagnosis mode?
Repeatability (same method independently of the fault)
Fast identification of the fault
Certainty of the diagnosis (reduces the risk of useless
replacements)
The aim of this form is to encourage the organisation of a diagnostic process. The participant
has to fill in the form completely. The diagnostic path can be summarised in 7 steps:
1. collecting the information about the motorcycle and the condition of the instrument panel.
2. Scanning the motorcycle electronic system: GLOBAL SCAN
3. Specific diagnosis of the control unit showing the fault or connected to the signalled fault
4. Check DTC for any SAT bulletins or TIPS relevant to the fault under test
5. Electric diagnosis of the components
6. Electric diagnosis of the battery absorption condition in key-off status
7. Final considerations and solution

The data collected by the Global Scan, the information from the customer and the info
read on the instrument panel will give an indication on where to start the check.
The main operations to consider are:
1) self-diagnosis, using DDS2.0 for the control unit showing ATT (live) or MEM
(stored) errors
2) electric tests by checking voltage, current, resistance and continuity by means
of a multimeter
3) electric tests by checking the current absorbed by the motorcycle in key-off using
the DMT tool.

The step following Global Scan consists in selecting the control unit from which the self-
diagnosis should be started and in filling in completely the table of unit 2.
Besides the list of errors, the following fields - which are essential for a correct diagnosis - must
be present and must be completed.
• ECU info
• Engineering parameters
• Statuses
• Activations
• Settings.

Use the activation page to find out whether any of the actuators is not working
properly. Warning: in case of errors on the actuators, some of the activations may
not be available. Complete the settings field with the info on what has to be used
after fixing the fault.
After checking for faults in the control units as described above in unit 2, now check
if any SAT service bulletins and/or Tips&Tricks referring to the signalled problem or
to the diagnosed errors are available:

Relying on the information collected and the checks carried out in the units as
described above, assess whether it is necessary to perform one or more electric
tests using a multimeter:
It is a good practice to carry out general checks when examining an electric system,
such as check of fuses, power supply and ground points of control units and
actuators. Besides, check electric continuity of the affected wiring branches.
