2. Have you ever wondered if there was an amazing
way to deal with change in your work and in
your life? If yes, then, “WHO MOVED MY
CHEESE?” by Dr. Spencer Johnson is exactly
what you need. What attracted me to read this
book was the title and it offered food for thought
and made me curious.
3. • Change– The ever constant star in the horizon of
our lives- is inevitable. Every individual has a
different approach to deal with this change.
While some sit back, blame god and pity their
luck; some simply refuse to adapt to change. But
there are others who are always ready and are
quick on their feet to make the most of the
change.
4. INTRODUCTION
WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?
Who moved my cheese is a fable about four characters who live in
a maze and they all love cheese. When the cheese disappears,
Scurry and Sniff enthusiastically head out into the maze to find
new cheese. On the other hand Hem and Hall feel betrayed and
complain. They waste their time and energy hoping the old cheese
will return. Hall realizes the old cheese won’t return so he sets out
into the maze in search for new cheese. He writes what he learns
on the walls hoping that Hem will follow him. Eventually he
discovers new cheese and sees that Scurry and Sniff were already
there. Cheese a metaphor for what you want to have in life. It
could be a good job, loving relationship, money or health.
5. The Writings On The Wall of the maze
made by Hem makes one easily
understand how change affects one’s life.
HAVING CHEESE MAKES YOU HAPPY
IF YOU DO NOT CHANGE, YOU CAN BECOME EXTINCT
SMELL THE CHEESE OFTEN SO YOU KNOW WHEN IT’S GETTING OLD
MOVEMENT IN A NEW DIRECTION HELPS YOU FIND NEW CHEESE
THE QUICKER YOU LET GO OF THE OLD CHEESE, THE SOONER YOU
FIND NEW CHEESE
IT IS SAFER TO SEARCH IN THE MAZE THAN REMAIN IN A
CHEESELESS SITUATION
NOTICING SMALL CHANGES EARLY HELPS YOU ADAPT TO THE
BIGGER CHANGES THAT ARE TO COME
MOVE WITH THE CHEESE AND ENJOY IT
6. MONITOR CHANGE
• Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting
Old:
Monitor change! We often get comfortable in situations and
tend to avoid new ones due to fear of the unknown. We are
often ignorant to the small changes that are being made
because we are so caught up in our comfort zone. Be
careful of all that is going on rather than sitting back and
letting life pass you by.
7. FACE YOUR FEARS!
• When You Stop Being Afraid You Feel Good:
Face your fears! Our fears often make a situation
undergoing change appear to be worse than it really is.
Johnson’s book teaches you to take stock of each scenario
and helps you to put your fears aside in order to look to
the future. Conquering your fear and approaching ‘change
situations’ with the right attitude can put an entirely new
(and positive) spin on things, allowing you to navigate the
event in a logical and rational manner.
8. LOOK TO THE FUTURE!
• Imagining Yourself With New Cheese Leads You To It:
Look to the future! Sometimes we’re so focused on what
we’re leaving behind, we don’t realize that what we’re
looking for is actually just ahead of us. Let go off the past
by setting new goals and imagine yourself achieving those
goals. When you start envisioning yourself in new, positive
situations and opening yourself up to new ideas, only then
will you start heading in the right direction.
9. ADAPT TO CHANGE QUICKLY
• The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You
Can Enjoy New Cheese:
Adapt to change quickly! Despite your fears and
apprehensions, it’s important to embrace inevitable change
and acknowledge it as an opportunity for growth and
development. Dwelling in the past will only lead to misery
and frustration, so instead focus your energy on adjusting
your lifestyle and mindset to the new order of things.
10. CHANGE & ENJOY CHANGE
• Move With The Cheese And Enjoy It:
Change and enjoy change! According to dr. Johnson, “that
what you are afraid of is never as bad as you imagine. The
fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the
situation that actually exists.” So let go and give in to the
alterations taking place in your life. Focus on the good in
these new experiences instead of dwelling on what you
might be losing and you will find many new doors opening
up!
11. AND THE UNANSWERED QUESTION...
WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?
• Dr. Johnson never answers this question in the book. The point
he seems to make is, it doesn't matter who moved your cheese.
Just get up and start looking for new cheese. I would argue,
however, that in a corporate change management program,
answering this question is very important. Are we making the
change because the customer is asking for it? Is the CEO
decreeing the change? Is this based on a grass roots effort among
employees?
• Understanding who moved the cheese can greatly impact people's
emotional reaction to a change, which in turn will influence the
type of change management program you create.
12. CONCLUSION
• We must change when the change occurs.
• We must let go off the past and face the future with true
spirit.
• We must over come our fears to achieve goals.
13. You Can’t Change Your
Situation.
The Only Thing That You
Can Change Is
How You Choose To
Deal With It.
THANK YOU
….Be positive, don’t afraid of
any change, have futuristic view and
make plans accordingly.
