A story has five basic but
important elements.
These are the characters,
setting, plot, conflict and
theme.
Characters
 Characters are
most often the
people or animals.
 They move the
story’s plot
forward.
 They are the WHO
of the story.
Setting
 A story’s setting
refers not only to
the physical
location but also
the time the action
takes place.
 It is the WHERE
and WHEN of the
story.
Plot
 The plot relates to the events that
happen in a story.
 It is the WHAT of the story.
 It can be further divide into sub-
elements such as:
Introduction
Rising action
Climax
Falling action
Resolution
Conflict
 It can be
though of as a
challenge or
problem that
derives the
action of the
story.
Theme
 Refers to the
underlying insight,
the moral or idea
that the writer is
expressing
through the story.
 It is often though
of as the
‘MESSAGE’ of the
story.

Point of View
 The one who speaks in
the story.
 Students must ask
“who is telling the
story?”, “Is it a first,
second or third
person?”
Tone
It is the over all “flavour” of the
story that is created by using all
the techniques combined.
The attitude the writer displays
towards the subject.
Style
 It is the individual author’s unique
voice and it is again evidenced in
their word choices, plot patterns,
sentence structures and etc.
Mood
 This is about the effect the writer
creates in the reader and how
they evoke it through their use of
language.

 This story was written by Socorro
Villanueva.
 All the techniques being used in the
story is based on the reality.
 She wrote this story as a course
requirement which became her
winning entry in 52nd Don Carlos
Palanca Memorial Awards.
 It earned the first prize.
The characters of the story
are the mother, Katrina-
the daughter and narrator of
the story, and Squeak- her
sister

Elements of the_story

  • 2. A story has five basic but important elements. These are the characters, setting, plot, conflict and theme.
  • 3. Characters  Characters are most often the people or animals.  They move the story’s plot forward.  They are the WHO of the story.
  • 4. Setting  A story’s setting refers not only to the physical location but also the time the action takes place.  It is the WHERE and WHEN of the story.
  • 5. Plot  The plot relates to the events that happen in a story.  It is the WHAT of the story.
  • 6.  It can be further divide into sub- elements such as: Introduction Rising action Climax Falling action Resolution
  • 7. Conflict  It can be though of as a challenge or problem that derives the action of the story.
  • 8. Theme  Refers to the underlying insight, the moral or idea that the writer is expressing through the story.  It is often though of as the ‘MESSAGE’ of the story.
  • 10. Point of View  The one who speaks in the story.  Students must ask “who is telling the story?”, “Is it a first, second or third person?”
  • 11. Tone It is the over all “flavour” of the story that is created by using all the techniques combined. The attitude the writer displays towards the subject.

  • 13. Style  It is the individual author’s unique voice and it is again evidenced in their word choices, plot patterns, sentence structures and etc.
  • 14. Mood  This is about the effect the writer creates in the reader and how they evoke it through their use of language.
  • 15. WE WON’T CRY ABOUT THIS  This story was written by Socorro Villanueva.  All the techniques being used in the story is based on the reality.
  • 16.  She wrote this story as a course requirement which became her winning entry in 52nd Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards.  It earned the first prize.
