3. Introduction
• What is RESA?
Runway End Safety Area is defined as the area beyond the end of the runway that is prepared
or suitable for reducing damage to aircraft in the event of:
❑ Undershoot
❑ Overshoot
On July 2011, A Caribbean Airline Boeing 737-800,
from Port of Spain to Georgetown with 157 pax
and 6 crew, overran Georgetown’s runway 06,
broke through the perimeter fence, 52 people
were taken to hospitals for assessments, three of
them remained in hospital care.
4. Factual Information
Yangon International Airport is Aerodrome Reference Code 4E and operates with a single
runway with 3414 m long and 61 m width;
RWY21 is an Instrument Runway, with Precision Approach Category I, with a published
ILS/DME instrument approach procedure (IYGN ILS/DME RWY 21 – AIP);
RWY21 is used for over than 92 % of the total Aircraft movements due to predominant
winds from South sector and crosswinds occur occasionally and specially during the
monsoon season:

5. Standards
• 3.4.2 A strip shall extend before the threshold and beyond the end of the runway or stopway
for a distance of at least: 60 m where the code number is 2, 3 or 4;
• 3.5.3 A runway end safety area (RESA) shall extend from the end of a runway strip to a
distance of at least 90m where: the code number is 3 or 4;
• 3.5.4 Recommendation. — A RESA area should, as far as practicable, extend from the end of a
runway strip to a distance of at least: 240 m where the code number is 3 or 4;
• 3.5.5 The width of a RESA shall be at least twice that of the associated runway.
• 3.5.8 Recommendation.— A RESA should provide a cleared and graded area for aeroplanes
which the runway is intended to serve in the event of an aeroplane undershooting or
overrunning the runway.

6. Standards
• 3.5.9 Recommendation.—The slopes of a RESA should be such that no part of the runway end
safety area penetrates the approach or take-off climb surface.
• 3.5.10 Recommendation.—The longitudinal slopes of a RESA should not exceed a downward
slope of 5 percent. Longitudinal slope changes should be as gradual as practicable and abrupt
changes or sudden reversals of slopes avoided.
• 3.5.11 Recommendation.—The transverse slopes of a RESA should not exceed an upward or
downward slope of 5 per cent. Transitions between differing slopes should be as gradual as
practicable.
• 3.5.12 Recommendation.—A RESA should be so prepared or constructed as to reduce the risk
of damage to an aeroplane undershooting or overrunning the runway, enhance aeroplane
deceleration and facilitate the movement of rescue and fire fighting vehicles as required in
9.2.34 to 9.2.36.

For Code 3 and 4 RWYs, RWY strips must extend at least 140 m either side of the RWY centreline and
at least 60 m beyond the end of the RWY.
