• Phase 1: December 2011 smart pens
• Phase 2: March 2012 smart pens and Adobe Connect

• Purchased HD webcams & LiveScribe smart pens (Connect
was already being piloted on campus)
• Short training session for the teaching team
• Adobe Connect to record & review student teacher micro-teach
(used with the webcams)
• LiveScribe smart pens for student teachers to record the
feedback they received from the group
• Policy challenges: data protection, performance rights, IPR
• Technical challenges
Evaluation (smart pens)
• Captured feedback in December 2011 & March 2012
• Smart Pens considered easy to use
• Concept of recording feedback useful
• Student teachers in 3 faculties adopted use of smart
pens in teaching practice (MaPs, PVAC & Arts)
• Some considered pens as 'gimmick'
• Ergonomic issues being reported

• Don't expect widespread implementation of smart pens (cost)
• Alternative means of capturing audio available
• Discussions led to consideration of other use of smart pens e.g.
Supervision, research
• Highlighted some policy implications - SDDU supporting the
University with resolving these

• Continuing to use smart pens in other areas of the courses

Effective solutions for recording student work and peer feedback: the use of Adobe Connect and LiveScribe smart pens

  • 6. Project aims • Establish efficient and sustainable means of capturing presentations • Provide students with recordings of their work • Improve student presentation skills • Encourage deeper reflection & improve student learning
  • 7. Implementation • Piloted with student-teachers on SDDU's accredited teacher training programmes: University of Leeds Teacher Award 1 & 2 • Phase 1: December 2011 smart pens • Phase 2: March 2012 smart pens and Adobe Connect
  • 8. Implementation • Purchased HD webcams & LiveScribe smart pens (Connect was already being piloted on campus) • Short training session for the teaching team • Adobe Connect to record & review student teacher micro-teach (used with the webcams) • LiveScribe smart pens for student teachers to record the feedback they received from the group • Policy challenges: data protection, performance rights, IPR • Technical challenges

Evaluation (smart pens) • Captured feedback in December 2011 & March 2012 • Smart Pens considered easy to use • Concept of recording feedback useful • Student teachers in 3 faculties adopted use of smart pens in teaching practice (MaPs, PVAC & Arts) • Some considered pens as 'gimmick' • Ergonomic issues being reported

Impact • Don't expect widespread implementation of smart pens (cost) • Alternative means of capturing audio available • Discussions led to consideration of other use of smart pens e.g. Supervision, research • Highlighted some policy implications - SDDU supporting the University with resolving these • Explored alternatives Adobe Connect for recording presentations • Continuing to use smart pens in other areas of the courses
