I-General information about Bus duct Trunking System:
1- Bus duct trunking system
Simply understanding, Bus duct trunking system is used to replace traditional Power Cable in many kind of
projects thanks to its advantage. Bus duct are produced with stuff cover (housing), with conductors covered by
electrical insulated material ( Polyester, Mylar, Epoxy, Mica). The maximum length of single bus duct is 3m
long, and connected by joints, Plugging or tap-off boxes can be fixed at bus duct for power distribution at any
storeys.
There are many kind of bus run, however, there are only three main kinds:
-From Transformer to LV Panel - ( Horizontal run)
-From Generator to LV Panel - ( Horizontal run)
-From LV Panel to storeys ( for power distribution) - (Vertical Run)

2-Bus duct Manufacturers and Bus duct sold in Vietnam
Bus duct trunking system have been using popularly in USA, Japan, Europe, Korea from early of 1980’s.
There are hundreds of Bus Duct Manufacturers in the world, however, there are only some below brand
names having big share and products sold worldwide:
Leading is Schneider with 18% of world market, followed by Siemens with 15%, emerging in recent years is
LS Cable with 12% of world market, GE with 11%, Cutler Hammer ( Eaton) with below 10%.
Products from Siemens, GE promoted in Vietnam are quite different from products sold in USA:
-Siemens, GE made in USA use EPOXY for Insulation
-Schneider, Siemens, GE made in Vietnam, China use MYLAR for Insulation
(In the 4 leading producers in USA, only Schneider offer both Epoxy and Mylar Insulation)

In Vietnam market, there are 8 brand names with market share accordingly as follow:

Schneider – Made in China - 23% Vietnamese market share in 2008
This top 3 accounted for 75% of Vietnam market in 2008.
Followed are 5 brand names GE (made in China), HENIKWON, TRANSLITE, MEGADUCT with the rest
25% of market share. The last 4 brand names come from Malaysia.

The biggest discrepancy between Global Manufacturers ( Schneider, Siemens, LS Cable, GE) and other
Manufacturers are:
-Global brand name use all Aluminium Housing (except Schneider with Steel + Aluminium housing) / 3 of 4
brand name comes from Malaysia use Steel Housing ( and in most case, called Metal Housing, not mentioned
steel housing in quotation sent to customers).
-Global players have short-circuit withstand type test 1s (second) and 3s (second) / But 2 of Malaysia have
only 3 cycles = 0.05s, 6 cycles = 0.1 type test only. The rest players with 1s test but with small value
compared with global players.
As mentioned above, by using Mylar for insulation ( one kind of film developed by DuPont , winding around
conductor by hand) for product promoted in Vietnam, Schneider (made in China), Siemens ( made in
Vietnam), and GE ( made in China) have the value for short – circuit type test is much lower than products
made in USA ( using EPOXY). ( Reader can refer the catalogue of product made in USA and China /
Vietnam)
For example, GE, SIEMENS, Cutler Hammer made in USA together with LS Cable made in Korea can reach
200kA for 4000A, but when producing in China & Vietnam for GE, Siemens , this value drop to 150A only.
Therefore, we can come to the conclusion as follow:

II-Feature of Bus duct sold in Vietnam produced by 8 brand names:
1-Housing ( outside cover):
+Extruded 2-piece Aluminium Housing : LS Cable (made in Korea)
+4-piece Aluminium Housing : Siemens (VN), PPB, GE (China)
+2-piece steel + 2 piece Aluminium : Schneider (China)
+Steel Housing : Translite, Megaduct, Henikwon
(Remark: Henikwon mentions both Aluminium & Steel Housing in catalogue, but no any Aluminium housing
reported by market for the time being)
Extruded 2-piece aluminium housing 4 piece housing
Generally, when using extruded 2 piece Aluminium housing like LS Cable and GE ( made in USA, not
China), the capacity of Short Circuit withstand will be very strong, and this is why, LS Cable and GE ( made
in USA) can have higher value than even Schneider & Siemens made in USA. Besides, by using extruded 2
piece Aluminium housing, endurance of system against mechanical impact will be much more than using 4
piece housing. Finally by using 2 Extruded Aluminium housing, the capacity to protect system against
ingression of humidity / water / dust / strange material to the system is higher.
The Advantage of Aluminium Housing compared with Steel housing as follow:
-Aluminium is lighter than Steel, therefore, It is easy for handling, moving and installing when
using Aluminium Housing. When staying at the position, Aluminium Housing bus duct system will be
safer for hanging system ( support).
-Conductivity of Aluminium is better than Steel, therefore, when using Aluminium Housing,
Earthing ( Housing) will be more than 100%E compared with Steel housing with only 50%E
-The surface temperature of Aluminium Housing is lower than Steel Housing, therefore, when
using Aluminium housing, the system will be better, with lower loss and possibility of maintaining
the operating current is better than Steel Housing.

By above advantage, global manufacturers use Aluminium Housing from 5-6 years ago, instead of
using Steel Housing.
2-Electrical Conductors:
In Principle, only AL(Aluminium) or CU (Copper) used for Electrical Conductor in Power
Distribution with the purity up to 99,99%.
With CU, Electrical Conductivity is more than 90% compared with Aluminium with 63%, therefore,
when using at the same operating current, Aluminium Conductor will have larger cross section
than Copper conductor. It leads to the size of Bus duct using Al conductor bigger than Bus duct using
CU Conductor. However, with Aluminium Conductor, the Bus duct System will be lighter and
cheaper than Bus duct system using Copper Conductor. The discrepancy in size of these two kinds of
bus duct is not considerable when using in commercial building, therefore, using of Aluminium
Conductor is strongly recommended by nearly all producers to save cost for customers. In Europe,
Japan, Korea, most of bus duct demand for commercial building is Aluminium conductor Bus duct.
Copper conductor bus duct are recommended to use in Projects like Data Centre, Hospital, Study and
Research Institute,….where, high sensitive equipments & devices used.
Besides, some brand names have only Aluminium Bus duct up to 4000A or below, in this case, some
customers are suggested to use all Copper Bus duct to avoid the competition from brand name that
have Aluminium Bus Duct. Customer certainly will not have any benefit from this kind of
recommendation, but have to pay heavily for Copper bus duct unnecessarily.
3-Electrical Insulation Material:
This is a controversial and funny topic, because, when promoting to customers some salesman from
various brand name affirm that Epoxy insulation is better when their product using Epoxy Insulation,
and vice versa, confirming that Mylar is better when product using Mylar. However, with experience
in Bus duct and actual information from various manufacturers as well as the true specification of
insulation material, we can list the insulation Material used by the development of Bus duct as
follow:
-Busbar Trunking Systems are designed to IEC439-1 & IEC 439-2 which limits the operating
temperature to a maximum of 95 deg C, and all of Insulations like Polyester, Mylar, Epoxy reach
130 degree C and a little bit higher, than much more than standard ( in case more than 130 degree C
is unnecessary, because, this is normal use, cannot be used for Fire Resistant Bus duct like Mica
Insulation).
-Firstly, Polyester Film used ( wrapping around conductor by hand)
-Secondly, DuPont developed Mylar, a kind of film more than 40 years ago ( winding around
Conductor by hand)
(Siemens VN, Schneider China, Schneider USA, GE China use Mylar)
-Finally, Epoxy used for Bus duct Insulation in recent years.
(Siemens USA, Schneider USA, GE USA, LS Cable, PPB, Henikwon, Megaduct use Epoxy)
-Mica insulation used for fire resistant Bus duct ( 1200 degree C)

+Producing Bus duct with Epoxy Insulation needs assembly line and many kind of test, more
complicated, more expensive than producing Bus duct by using Mylar (winding by hand), then why
producers have to develop EPOXY to replace Mylar and Polyester recently?
+Then, why producers in USA and LS Cable made in Korea have to use Epoxy and do not use Mylar
to promote in US Market? ( except Square D still use both 2 kind of insulation in USA)
+When produced in VN, China, why all global players like Siemens, GE, and Schneider uses Mylar?
Is this true if Mylar is better than Epoxy?
In case saying that Mylar is better than Epoxy, then, US standard is lower than in China and Vietnam?
Because in US, EPOXY is used for Bus duct by all Producers.
(Schneider (Square D) uses both Epoxy and Mylar in the US market. Schneider is the only major producer that
continues to offer the Mylar insulation, primarily because it is a lower-cost option for the customers.)
With our experience, using Epoxy or Mylar, certainly producer study carefully and, even Mylar, with lower
value in insulation compared with Epoxy, but exceeding the minimum standard Insulation for Cable ( 0.5
MΩ - Japan, Korea, and many other countries).
Below is actual specification of EPOXY compared with Mylar:
+EPOXY bus duct have insulation up to 20-50 MΩ after installation, meanwhile, Using Mylar
Insulation, the insulation value is around 5-15 MΩ (in case reader can give evidence that Mylar
can have more insulation value after system installed , we and producer can revise this point).
+With EPOXY, the lifetime of bus duct system is confirmed at 50-70 years, meanwhile, many people
are still in doubt about lifetime of Mylar insulation. However, with more than 40 years used in Bus
duct, Mylar proves the long lifetime, if not, noone dares to use.
+Using Epoxy, the capacity to avoid humidity is better, because, Fluidized Epoxy will be sticked
tightly to the surface of conductor. However, using Mylar in countries with low humidity still proves
good quality.
How about Malaysia, it rains a lot in Malaysia in rainy season, and easily to realize that why most of
Malaysian Producers choose Epoxy instead of Mylar though with the cheap labour cost, producing
Mylar bus duct quite cheaper.
+However, using Epoxy does not mean that, it can have high short circuit withstand, because, this
specification depends on the structure of housing. With actual type test, proving that only GE made in
USA and LS Cable made in Korea as well as Cutler Hammer made in US can have the highest Short
Circuit Withstand in the world thanks to the Extruded 2 piece Aluminium Housing ( other use 4 piece
housing). It also prove that, even using Epoxy, but Short Circuit Withstand of most product from
Malaysia stay at low value ( or even not have 1s, 3s test).
Therefore, according to all above true information we can summarise as below:

Remark: Epoxy is traditional insulation Material used for Electrical Insulation for more than 100 year.

Then, we can come to conclusion that Epoxy is modern technology in Busduct, and certainly it have
some advantages compared with Mylar. However, using Epoxy is more expensive than Mylar in
production.
4-Shape of Bus duct:
The standard shape of Bus duct in the world now is Sandwich Type, with 4 wings ( for cooling). Most
of brand name produces this kind of bus duct, except Translite, Megaduct with square section without
wings.
5-Accessories of Bus duct:
Most of brand name have the same Accessories called with the names slightly difference, but
everybody can understand. However, only LS Cable bus duct, the accessory called Extension ( used
by most of producers in case long bus run) to absorb or compensate the length of Bus duct is
unnecessary any more due to the special Bolted Joint ( reader can refer the catalogue).
MCCB equipped in Plugging boxes, Siemens and LS Cable offer for Vietnamese customers MCCB
with Icu minimum from 40/50kA up to 70-80kA, with Ics=100% Icu, meanwhile other producers
offer from 25kA, and using some kind of MCCB with Ics=50% Icu only.
6-Specification for design Bus duct trunking System:
The world and Vietnamese standard in design ( still not compulsory) now:

-3P+100%N+100%E =housing ( can be 200%N, more option internal 50%E, 100%E)
-Aluminium Housing
-CU or AL conductor
-IP 54
-IEC 60439-1/2
-Short Circuit test 1s/3s certified by ASTA and/or KEMA and/or TTA
IP 42 is nearly removed by most of countries because it still permits the ingress of dust with diameter
1mm. By the way, water resistant cannot be compared with IP 54 which is much better.
IP 65 is rarely to be used. IP 68 ( Cast Resin Bus duct) can be used in deep water or underground
available by nearly all producers in request. Besides, for some Brand name like LS Cable, Fire
Resistant Bus duct ( 1200 Degree C) is available with MICA insulation.
7-Cost Price and Selling Price in Vietnam market:
Basing on above information, it is easy to realize that with modern technology and Origin from Korea
( GDP per capita 22,000 USD/year, 1 of top 12 developed countries in the world), LS Cable Bus duct
promoted in Vietnam cannot have Cost Price lower than product made in Vietnam, China, Malaysia
( labour cost only 150-500 USD/month). However, with proper margin from producer, and importer,
we can confirm that the selling Price Policy of LS Cable is at the most competitive level thanks to the
big capacity of factory and global policy of LS Cable ( aiming to satisfaction of customers worldwide
both in Highest Quality and competitive Price level).

8-Service & Warranty:
Most of brand name has below service & Warranty:
-Isomatrical drawing
-Shop Drawing ( Production drawing)
-Consulting for installation
-Warranty from 12-24 Months, especially LS Cable with 60 months from commissioning date
9-Cost using of Bus duct trunking system compared with Cable:
According to global construction companies like Kumho, Hyundai, GS, operating current from 630A,
using Bus duct is more economical than using of Cable. However, in VN, the labour cost is cheap,
leading to cheap cable installation, therefore, according to our calculation, from 1000A using
Aluminium Bus duct is cheaper than Cable, and from 1250A or 1600A using Copper bus duct is
cheaper than Cable.
However, due to space saving and harmonized view of Bus duct system, many investor agree to use
from 800A
10-Breakdown of Bus duct Trunking System
Globally, breakdown happens with most brand names, and they come to the conclusion that the main
reasons are as below:
-Production: very rarely, because 100% of products should be test before leaving the factories ( zero
defect). Before installing, 100% items should be check again.
-Untightenning at bolted Joint: lead to electric spark. Famous brand name use double bolted joint to
ensure that the tightening force should be from 800-1000kgN/cm2, when the upper bolt broke off.
-Water contamination: therefore, bus duct system should be protected against water. With IP 54,
water resist is much better than IP 42.
-Simultaneously heavy loads: Very rarely,
-Short circuit by strange conducting material at Joint : very rarely
-Damage of support system: very rarely, and when using Aluminium housing Bus duct, the weight
of system will be lighter and therefore safer for support system.
Then, most of reasons which can lead to damage of Bus duct Trunking system come from the
preservation and installing process.
Therefore, in case, bus duct system damaged at time of energizing for the first time, who will be
responsible for this??? To avoid the debate between supplier, buyer and installer, LS Cable
and/or authorised importer of LS Cable have installing and testing procedure for bus duct
trunking system, and warranty time counted from the date of successful energizing for the first
time. This is also the unique service in Vietnam market.

11-Ranking by appearance, structure of housing, short circuit withstanding and servicing:
-Appearance: with sandwich type and electrostatic painted, extruded 2-piece Aluminium housing, LS
Cable have the best appearance compared with other bus duct sold in Vietnam ( reader can check the
sample of all brand name)
-Size: LS Cable also has the smallest square section (reader can refer dimension in catalogue of all
other bus duct)
-Short Circuit withstand 1s (Asta, Kema, TTA): With 200kA from 4000A for both Al & Cu bus
duct, LS Cable also have the highest value in Short Circuit Withstand (1s) compared with others.
-Servicing: With 5 years warranty from the commissioning date, we can also confirm that this is the
longest warranty time in the market.
-Original: Product made in Korea, a developed country of the world with GDP up to 22,000
USD/capita, compared with from China, Vietnam, and Malaysia of all other brand name.
Note: Frankly, when working with LS Cable in 2008 about formal deployment of LS Cable bus duct
to VN, we did not expect that LS Cable had such success in the world ( top 3) and do not think that
LS Cable can have same specification with GE made in US and even higher than specification of
Schneider / Siemens made in USA and much higher than Schneider / Siemens / GE made in China /
Vietnam. Therefore, though we respect the reputation of above brand name but we still decide to
supply Vietnam market the true information to customers who are the uppermost decision maker.
However, we do not mean that their products promoted in Vietnam market are not good, but with
many years experienced in Bus duct business, we can confirm that above brand name’s products are
produced with high quality, and simply, LS Cable in case would like to conquer the confidence of
customer worldwide, they should produce product with higher specification and sold at more
competitive price level. That is the formal explanation we received from LS Cable.
12-Vietnam market 2008 & 2009:
From 2006 backward, Busway mainly used for foreign invested projects like Saigon Centre ( Siemens
USA), Caravelle Hotel ( LS Cable), Daewoo Hotel ( LS Cable ) Park Hyatt Hotel ( Siemens Europe),
…and some factories.
From 2007, with the trend of high-rise building construction, Bus duct becomes the demand of
Vietnam market. With the launching of Siemens factory in VN, Bus duct are more familiar with
customers. At that time, market was mainly in hand of Schneider (China) & Siemens (VN). Also
from that time GE (China), and various brand name from Malaysia started promoting in VN market
with PPB, Translite, Megaduct, Henikwon. With the advantage compared with two other players from
Malaysia, PPB (Aluminium housing, Epoxy), Henikwon ( Steel housing, Epoxy), PPB and Henikwon
seems more successful. However, most of projects and market are still in hand of Schneider &
Siemens.
The results of Siemens & Schneider reflect the image of brand name and the good quality as well as
service of these two brand names. Also in this time, GE, and Malaysian’s brand names got the very
modest result.
Since 2008, after having the big result in Singapore ( no.1) and Philippines ( no.1), as well as at Middle East
( No.3), America, China….LS Cable comes to VN with the record Bus duct contract value ( up to nearly 1 Mil
USD FOB) for Samsung factory in Bacninh Province, also for Kumho with nearly 1 Mil USD FOB ( delivery

in 2008 600,000 USD), and Lotte Mart ( 50,000 USD). With these only 3 projects, LS Cable promptly became
the leading of Vietnam market in 2008. Siemens got the very best result with projects from 50,000 USD
-500,000 USD and stayed in the second position with around 1,4 Mil USD sold in 2008, followed by
Schneider with the turn-over slightly lower. Meanwhile the rest five brand names with some small & medium
projects accounted for around 25% of Vietnam market only. It proves that, though using Epoxy (new
technology), except Translite ( Polyester, Mylar), but we do not know why most of brand name from Malaysia
do not have good appearance with big square section and using Steel housing, especially, 2 of above brand
name do not have Type test 1s/3s for Short Circuit Withstand. Except PPB (using Aluminium housing,
Epoxy), but Type test 1s/3s with very low value ( up to 50KA only), but with competitive price policy,
Malaysia’s brand name meet the cost cutting from Vietnamese customers and have some results.
(Note: Singapore is traditional market of Malaysian brand name, LS Cable started promoting strongly to
Singapore from 2006 and 2008 got the leading position of market with 40% market share. Huge Projects like
Changi Airport, The Sail twin building, and many others served by LS Cable. Singapore is also the country
applies the high standard for Electrical system in building, for example, MCB 10kA, MCCB from 40kA, with
Ics=100% Icu).
In 2009, with the other record for Hanoi Plaza projects ( up to nearly 1 Mil FOB), and delivery for the last
phase of Kumho, LS Cable, again, being the leading of Vietnam market in first 6 months. Siemens and
Schneider also have very good results with some big projects. Also, from March 2009, LS Cable assigned the
importer for South (Thaisonnam) & North (Thaisonbac) of Vietnam to serve Vietnamese customer with best
service and warranty time (5 years). Estimated in the last six months, fierce competition of above top 3 will be
happened and it is still very soon to say who is No.1 of market this year, but we can say that, the leader of
2009 can be 1 of 3 above brand name only. Also from 2009, nearly all famous brand name find the way to
decrease the selling price to customers, especially, with launching of LS Cable, advantage in selling price
from Malaysian brand name does not exist anymore.
We estimated that, in 2010, with some huge projects, situation is more complicated, but the price war can be
happened within the leading brand names and it will be the good sign for Vietnam market, because customer
can have cheaper product and at that time, we can also foresee that, Price level of top 3 LS Cable, Siemens,
Schneider in the world (and also the top three of Vietnam) will be nearly at the same selling price with
Malaysia’s brand names. GE is also strongly promoting to some big projects and, from 2010, there will be
main 4 players in VN market. At that time, without advantage in low price anymore, Malaysia’s brand name
can meet difficulty with strong brand names and at very competitive price. Besides, with Asian Tax level from
Siemens product produced in VN and LS Cable from Korea (same tax level with Asian), we think that these
two brand names will strongly promote back to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand.
Finally, we estimated that from 2011, main players in VN will be main players in the world ( Schneider,
Siemens, LS Cable and GE). Siemens with the advantage of factory in Vietnam and the best quality of LS
Cable, we strongly believe that LS Cable and Siemens can maintain the leading position of Vietnam market.
IV-Short information about LS Cable and authorised importers
1/ LS Group & LS Cable:
LS Cable belongs to LS Group (splitted from LG group in 2003) , specializing in producing power &
communication cable, Chiller, …with background from 1960. LS Cable also the top 3 of the world in power
cable & top 3 of the world in bus duct supplying ( especially, Siemens also a big bus duct customer of LS
Cable for offices, factories in Asia, Middle East, America and in oil & gas factories worldwide. Reader can
refer the project list).

LS Cable have cable factory in North & South of VN, and also is leading player of Cable market in VN with
30% market share ( but Bus duct business controlled by LS Cable Korea and through authorised Importers)

2/Authorised importer of LS Cable Bus duct business:
Thaisonnam in the south & Thaisonbac in the north were assigned as Authorised Importer of LS Cable Bus
duct from March 2009 to serve VN market.
Thaisonnam & Thaisonbac are authorised Importer of LSIS for Low-voltage product / Medium Voltage and
Transformer.
With the effort in more than 10 years, LS Low-voltage product now are accounting for 34% of Vietnam
market share and therefore, also leading companies in VN for LV product ( VN Low-voltage market share
followed by Schneider with 20%, ABB with 12-14%, Mitsubishi with 10%, Siemens 5%).
The remarkable of LV made by LSIS : from 2006 formally became the global player with launching
MCCB /ACB SUSOL series ( Icu from 50KA up to150KA, and Ics=100% Icu) in 2006. From that time, there
is no any gap between product produced & used in Europe by famous brand name and LS LV product. Also
from that time, LS low-voltage develop very fast and being the leading of Vietnam Market with the gap with
the second player more & more wide. Especially, with the favour of Japanese Projects in VN like Nidec,
Canon, Sanyo, Panasonic, Toshiba, and many more Japanese factories in North & South of VN, and series of
huge buildings, LS LV product made in Korea, proves the good & stable quality with the multi-original
Product of other brand names. The warranty scale of LS Low-voltage stay at 1/10,000 only in 2008, at lowest
level of Vietnam market.
Thaisonnam and Thaisonbac are run by key staffs with many years experience in sales & marketing and
market research position from some foreign companies / Law & consulting companies.
Finally, Thaisonnam & Thaisonbac are having Football teams, and especially, Thaisonnam is the champion
of Vietnam National Futsal league in 2008 & 2009.
