3. Layout
The layouts are completely
different, the preliminary task didn't
have an order to it and parts were
missing from it e.g. Barcode and
date/issue number. The final
cover, has everything on it and is a lot
brighter, making it more eye-catching
and therefore is more appealing. It is
very ordered and this makes it easier
to read, yet again making it more
appealing. The image is to the right of
the page, leaving text on the left hand
side, which means the left third rule
is used.
Fonts
The fonts on the final cover are a lot
bolder and bigger than the ones on the
preliminary cover, this makes it easier to
read and more appealing to the target
audience. They are clearly visible, unlike
the ‘prom hits the paper’ text on the
preliminary task, this makes the final
cover better for reading at a distance, to
catch the persons eye.
Colours
The preliminary task cover has a very
limited amount of dull colours, including a
bluey colour and a redy colour, these aren't
appealing, it also doesn’t have a
background, unlike the final cover, which
has a faded colour, from black to light
blue, this makes it stand out and then the
white text becomes really visible and it fits
in the brand identity. The preliminary cover
has images with a background and that
takes up a lot of the page, as there is two
pictures, where as the final cover has one
picture and that has had the background
cropped out, using Photoshop cs5.5, this
then takes up less of the page and stands
out more from the background.
Photography and mise-en-scene
As the theme was prom on the preliminary
task, the clothing used, was prom suits, the
setting; prom and the lighting was high
key, to make the day have a happy and nice
feeling to it. Low angle shots were used, this
is because the students were leaving
school, this means they are the top of all
students and therefore the low angle shot
makes them look powerful. The final cover
has the model/artist wearing modern
‘trendy’ clothes, that you associate with the
hip-hop genre, this makes it stereotypical
and conventional. The background was cut
out, so the setting isn’t needed.
Conventions
The clothing that the artist/model is
wearing in the final cover, is very
conventional of the hip-hop genre, as he
is wearing the exact same as what you
associate hip-hop with. He is also
black, which is also conventional of the
hip-hop genre. The preliminary task, is
semi-conventional, as it is bland, so isn’t
conventional as a magazine, but its about
school, which is dull and bland.

5. Layout
The layouts are completely different, the preliminary task had the images on the left, wit h the text on the right and it was all very close together
and looked too ordered, where as the final contents page is much more spaced out and is a lot more aesthetically pleasing an easier to
read. It uses the left third rule, to good effect and this is what you see first.
Fonts
The fonts on the final contents are different to the preliminary task, this is because the preliminary task was aimed at a different audience, there
fore was a lot blander, this makes the final contents a lot more appealing and as a result the fonts stand out a lot more and are visually
more appealing.
Colours
The preliminary task contents has no colour, apart from black and white, this isn’t appealing, unlike the final contents, which has a faded
colour, from black to light blue, this makes it stand out and then the white text becomes really visible and it fits in the brand identity. The
bright yellow box, stands out well and then people will be attracted to it and then they will be intrigued to find out more about the
subscription.
Image editing
The final contents has three pictures, two of which have had the backgrounds cut out, this is because they were plain and were taking up space.
But the other image has a background, which has been brightened up and made more vibrant, making it stand out and more appealing.
Photography and mise-en-scene
The final contents has the model/artist wearing modern ‘trendy’ clothes, that you associate with the hip-hop genre, this makes it stereotypical
and conventional. The background was cut out, so the setting isn’t needed. The others hoodies on, fitting in with the genre.
Conventions
The clothing that the artist/model is wearing in the final contents, is very conventional of the hip-hop genre, as he is wearing the exact same as
what you associate hip-hop with. He is also black, which is also conventional of the hip-hop genre. The others are wearing hoodies, this is
also conventional, but isn’t as stereotypical as ‘Riley’. The preliminary task, is semi-conventional, as it is bland, so isn’t conventional as a
magazine, but its about school, which is dull and bland.
6. How my skills have improved
Since the preliminary task, my skills have improved drastically, I have started to add
different colours, that are used to attract the audience to the magazine, it is also used to
create a brand identity for my magazine name. I have also introduced a range of
different visual layout techniques, for example I used the left third technique to get the
main information noticed. It is also a lot more conventional of the genre it is aimed
at, so this shows that my research and knowledge of the genres has grown and
improved, this is so that it is more appealing to my target audience, so they are more
likely to buy my magazine. I have thought about my use of fonts and amount of text, to
appeal to my target audience and making it more conventional of the genre the
magazine is aimed at.
Overall I think that I have improved my magazine a lot, making it more appealing to the
target audience and more conventional of the genre, this has been done through my
research and planning of my magazine and its genre.
