2. CHARACTERISTICS
Nine Characteristics of Suggestopedia (Villamin et
al. 1994)
1.It uses the power of suggestion to help students
eliminate the feeling that they cannot succeed.
2.There should be a relaxed, comfortable environment with
dim lights and soft music to facilitate learning.
3.Students’ imagination is used. They can assume new
names or identities and respond to the teacher
accordingly using the target language.
3. 4.Present and explain grammar and vocabulary words, but
not discuss at length or thoroughly.
5.Native language translation is used in order to get the
clear meanings of words in the target language.
6.Communication takes place in the conscious and
subconscious of the learners. Former is about the
linguistic message. It is where the students pay attention
to a dialogue that is being read, while the latter is where
the music is played as a background. Music suggests
CHARACTERISTICS
4. 7. Teaching is done by integrating music, song and drama.
8. The emphasis of teaching is more on content. Errors
made by students are tolerated at the beginning of the
lesson but in the latter part, the correct forms are used
by the teachers.
9. No formal tests are given, but the evaluation is done
during the normal in-class performance.
CHARACTERISTICS
5. PURPOSES
To learn a foreign language at an accelerated
pace for everyday communication by tapping
mental powers and overcoming psychological
barriers.
To liberate the mind of students from negative
assumptions that have been established.
6. PURPOSES
To facilitate a comfortable environment
To remember and integrate what they learn
into their personality To increase the ability to
learn To be in a state of certain relaxation
which increases receptivity
7. PURPOSES
To help students feel confident and make
them disregard barriers to learning
To accelerate memorization (up to 25 times
compared to the conventional way)
8. POSSIBLE TOPICS
Just like other approaches, any lesson
regarding second language learning can be
delivered through this. It can be used in
delivering grammar lesson or literature. For it
is basically dependent on the teacher, since
he is the one taking control over the class.
9. LESSON PLAN
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson 100% of the studentswit
of proficiency shall be able to:
• Discern what is analogy;
• Express feelings through analogy, and;
• Construct sentences consist of analogy.
11. III. Procedure
Preliminary Activities
a. Prayer
b. Checking of Attendance
Motivational Activity
While playing the song Father and Son, tell the
students to close their eyes. Let them think of
descriptive words which will suit their father. Hear
every student and make them feel that they can share
anything they want to say, no pressure.
12. Lesson Proper
Throw these questions to them:
Are you familiar with the song?
What is the title?
What does it convey regarding father and son?
How does it make you feel?
Other than the father-son relationship, what may
be the other theme of the song?
What other thing can we compare time with?
15. Application
In small groups, consist of five members each, be
able to create analogies from the pictures that will
be flashed in the screen. However, this will be
done through the game charades. The student in
front will be the one to create the analogy and will
pass it on. To make sure that students will not be
changing any word, they will first whisper the
analogy they have made to the teacher. Then,
when the teacher says “go”, that is the only time
when they will be allowed to pass it on. As soon
as the analogy has been passed to the last
16. Evaluation
In small groups with three members, think of
analogies for the following terms:
1. mother
2. friend
3. youth
4. teacher
5. school
17. Assignment
Choose a song and make (five) analogies
that talks about its message. Do this in a
one whole sheet of paper.
