Arts education in the Integrated Curriculum for Secondary Schools
(KBSM) is the name for a subject which means visual arts education.
What is visual art?. by Herbert Read, art is a form of production that
gave rise to the appearance of happiness, enjoyment and aesthetic
pleasure. Aesthetic pleasure is pleasure and delight to the recipient
receives the message and the message will be getting together to
complete the messages being delivered. (Mohamad. M. 1996. Arts
Education 1: Principles of Art Education. Kuala Lumpur. Budiman
Group Sdn.)
Linderman in his book titled 'Art In The Elementary School' art
categorized into sections such as visual arts and touch, craft,
technological art, environmental art, art consumers and art concepts.
regardless of the category and the definition made about the meaning
of art, something that should be known that art has features such as a
language in its own seemingly, high aesthetic value and it is born of
perception, skill and imagination.
Based on the features that are available in the art that the
Ministry of Education has put this subject on the Integrated Secondary
School Curriculum (KBSM). The aim is to develop the student's
personal quality in terms of aesthetic, creative and perceptions of the
business of life.
However, the researchers did not want to discuss about the
importance of arts education, but researchers want to study the
development of visual art on public sculpture at Sekolah Menengah
Kangkar Pulai. From the initial survey field researchers saw the need to
investigate the possible impact arising from the existence of public
sculpture on the ability of Visual Art appreciation among students at the
school. Through literature review researchers found one of the
educational process is through experience. The existence of a public
sculpture in the school in hope to provide a visual experience to its
students. The extent to which the existence of a public sculpture in the
school to help students in visual art curriculum.

It is common practice in schools to emphasize the fun aspect of the
school. Designation of cleanliness, safety and Cheerful school (The
power 3K) is an important unit in the system of school organization
including the SMK Kangkar Pulai, which is the field of research. One of
the fun activities at the school is to produce a murals painting on the
walls of facing a crowd and create a landscape garden. However, for
sculpture, especially public sculpture, it is still not getting the response
from the school community to produce it. This is very detrimental to
students not being able to take a closer look to understand let alone
public sculpture it self. Which is why the researchers felt the need to
create a public sculpture in the school to provide opportunities for the
school community to view and appreciate the art of the sculpture as
well as it could offset the environmental conditions in the school.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this research are:
i. To invigorate the school to create a
public sculpture
ii. To examining the ability of appreciation
of the visual arts among the students
through a public sculpture in the school
field
iii. To see whether public art sculpture in
the school curriculum to help provide
visual art experiences to students.
RESEARCH QUESTION
The research questions are:
i) How does the production of public
sculpture in SMK Kangkar Pulai
implemented?
ii) What is the reaction of students to
the existence of a public sculpture in
the school in terms of appreciation
and art criticism?
iii) Do students appreciate the
production as an element of public
sculpture that will add value to cheer
in the school environment?

Sculpture, translated from the 'sculpture', it can be defined briefly
as an artwork in the form of three- dimensional . Old Greek 'sculpere'
give meaning to carve, drill, cut. modeling a clay or wax to build a
figure or three-dimensional. (Gaunt 1966 Ockvirk 1994). Definition
sculptures change over time it is not just carving and modeling a, in
the modern era of any kind involving three-dimensional space with a
variety of techniques such as welding, grafts, sutures, knock,
adhesion and so on. Sculptural forms at the time of Michelangelo
sculptures changed Constructive, installation, 'site specific', public art,
environmental art, video art, electronic art.
Public Sculptures can also be understood as a product of art that
are placed in open space. It is a derivative work of art in a
comprehensive spatial dimensions. It is against the backdrop of the
space environment. Activities are concentrated outside the gallery

3. system, focused on the appreciation of the community in an open,
permanent and emphasizes certain requirements to ensure its
existence in accordance with the weather conditions, security and
maintenance.
Robert Atkins (1945), stated Art Public art is simple and produce for
own by community. When Meel Goding (2000) stated the Public Art is
a work for chamber-sponsored general and specifically with the
audience is crowded. He displays callenge and involves collaboration
between sculptor, architec, the bustling, shade art and need to be
sensitive about environment.
For Daniel Robins use of the term 'Public Sculpture' at first used in
1976 to refer to the development of the early history of the statue lay
in America (1893). Ramlan Abdullah stated about the statue lay in
Malaysia; Public sculptures in Malaysia are monumental and free
standing Often, most of the public sculpture were commissioned by
local municipals, art galleries or interested party in relaying their
messages to the general public.( Ramlan Abdullah :2010)
Availability of public sculpture is said to have an impact or a
memory to an audience, in other words they express a thing or event.
Emerging environment is a perfect situation to produce a work that
means it was not just about beauty but should be reflective, enlighten,
strengthen and challenge the imagination and inspire the next to
reach a high value. An important event like the August 31, 1957
should be peeled and delivered in the form of sculpture, as well as the
sad events like May 13 incident. (Syed Ahmad Jamal, 1996)
