NATIONALISM IN SOUTH
AFRICA
THE UNION OF SOUTH
AFRICA
• Was established as a self-governing state in 1910
• It consisted of white men only it focused on
building relations within the white population
• The British encouraged white South Africans to
work together in the interest of economic
efficiency.
• The two Boer states of Transvaal and Free State
were consolidated with British colony

THE VOTE
• Only white men could vote and be members of
the parliament
• Small amount of black and coloured men with
property and education were allowed to vote for
white members in parliament.
• Louis Botha was the prime minister of the Union
and Jan Smuts was a prominent member
THE LAND ACT
THE 1913 LAND ACT
• The land Act was passed in 1913
• Africans were restricted to buying land in
reserved areas
• Africans had 7% of the land which was later
increased to 13%
• Most people were forced to stay in overcrowded
areas causing poverty and starvation
FORMATION OF THE SANNC
• Dr Alfred Xuma led a new chapter of the ANC
• He made it more centralised and this build many
members in 1944
• Xuma encouraged a militant approach to
resistant to the likes of Nelson Mandela, Walter
Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki and Anton
Lembede
• Clash of ideas led to a split to PAC and ANC

• 1910 S.A gain independence from Britain but
Boer leaders dominated the new government
• Botha became prime minister and Smuts his
deputy
• In1914 the Afrikaner had a voice when National
Party was formed under General J.B.M Hertzog
• 1925 Afrikaans replaced Dutch as an official
language and Bible translated into Afrikaans
RISE OF THE LANGUAGE
AFRIKANER SOCIAL AND
CULTURAL MOVEMENT
• The Afrikaner Broederbond was a secret
organisation that meant the league of Afrikaner
brothers.
• It was formed in 1918 in order to promote
Afrikaner identity and nationalism
• Its members were young professional, teachers,
and ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church
FLAG OF THE NATIONAL
PARTY
THE VOLK
• The word Volk means the “people”
• This was meant that the group was more
important than the individual
• They improved the education of all the Afrikaner
people. They were to learn in white schools
only.
• Bantu Education was introduced for white
supremacy

• Blacks were schooled to become labourers for white learner
• They tried to bridge the gap between poor and rich Afrikaners
• The Dutch Reformed Church was the only way.
• D.F Millan, leader of the National Party.
