For the purposes of easier calculation and comparison with
other countries, it may be maintained that the average number
of the Lithuanian population during ten years is 3.095 million.

As we can see, the migration of population in Latvia is as large-scale as
it is in Lithuania. In the last ten years, the population of Latvia has also
decreased nearly by 11% (nearly as much as in Lithuania). Thus, the
average population of Latvia during the last ten years is 2.103 million.

Over the period of ten years, the Estonian population has only
decreased by 1.5%. Thus, it may be considered that the average
population in Estonia during the period of ten years is 1.331 million.
In this regard, Estonia is quite different from Latvia and Lithuania.

A resident filing refers to an application filed in the country by its own resident;
whereas a non-resident filing refers to the one filed by a foreign applicant.
An abroad filing refers to an application filed by this country's resident at a foreign office.

Around a third of the total filings in 2016 came from the EPO member states and two-thirds from outside Europe.
The top five countries were again the
US, Japan, China, Germany, and South Korea.
Analysis based on the European patent filings (Direct European filings under the EPC and international filings under
the PCT).
Statistics are based on the first-named applicant.
Figures are based on data from the EPO and WIPO (for PCT filings) as available on 27/01/2017. The PCT filings for
2016 are therefore estimates.

system.
It will have exclusive competence in respect of

-European patents with unitary effect.
The exclusive competence is however subject to exceptions during the transitional period.
The UPC's rulings will have effect in the territory of those Contracting Member States having ratified the UPC Agreement
at the given time. (Poland, Spain)
The UPC will not have any competence with regard to national patents.
