There are three primary areas in the life of a freelancer that need to be addressed balanced and continually evaluated in order to thrive.
Within these areas there are specific actions that freelancers need to take.
As we go through these areas I will explain why these actions are important.
The first one, Finance for Freelancers relates to your business. This is probably the one area most presenters talk about and the one that most freelancers stress about. You are probably quite familiar with it. But lets hit the important stuff.
Local Marketing
Remote Exposure
Regular Referrals
(recurring revenue, mailbox money)
Your income and your work will be Consistent and Predictable
Builds Stronger Relationships (existing clients) - Provides for additional work and coveted referrals
(Recent Podcast question)
When to invest?
Start up investments - at the beginning
Strategically planned investments - monthly, quarterly, or annually
Recognizing opportunities
Identifying your business needs
Watching for deals
Educating yourself
Planning when to take action
Implementing (taking action on what you planned and learned)
Taking advantage of opportunities
Reinvesting income
Learning
Paying for outsourcing
Building your toolkit
Sadly… Investing in your business does not always have a positive impact on your relationships or your well being.
As freelancers we tend to over do it.
It’s easy to become a workaholic
It’s not uncommon to spend all of your time or all of your money on your business – especially when you first start out.
Remember, there is more to thriving as a freelancer than just your business - you can have a life outside of your business!
Making time to interact with the people we need to have relationships with in order to thrive as a freelancer.
Family and friends - the people we WANT to spend more time with
Clients and customers the people we HAVE to have spend time with.
Learn how to say, “No.”
Use a calendar - plan and schedule
Use your “rules”
My all work and No Play Experience
I used to work 18 hours a day, 6 days a week.
Focusing this much time on my business weakened ties with my family and friends. I had to be the one to change!
I schedule regular work days that typically begin at 8am and work through until 4 or 5pm.
Occasionally, I mix it up and schedule a breakfast or lunch with a client.
On days that get interrupted with phone calls, errands, or a doctor or dentist appointment, I schedule myself “time off” from work.
I also schedule regular days off typically weekends, holidays, and birthdays even if there is business work to be done.
The fact of the matter is that there will always be business work that needs to be done but it is NOT what matters most.
Take weekends off
Stop work on time
Eat a meal together
Schedule vacation
Attend an event
Treat everyone how you would like to be treated (not how they treat you!)
Respect others
Be consistent and dependable
Educate others
Provide clear expectations with boundaries
A great relationship benefits everyone - Communicate regularly and honestly with family, friends, clients, and customers
WRAPPING UP THE RELATIONSHIP AREA
Boundaries apply to both business and relationships.
Setting, enforcing and living by your boundaries will have a positive impact on your relationships.
Improving your relationship building will also have a positive impact on the growth of your business.
But to thrive as a freelancer, it doesn’t stop there...
The last of the 3 areas that needs to be addressed,
balanced and continually evaluated is Fitness for Freelancers.
This area is pivotal in thriving as a freelancer. It relates to our personal well being.
2 things that freelancers struggle with in the area of mental health… isolation and stress
Surround yourself with comfortable things and
Create an ideal home office.
Work Remotely
When I first began my freelance business, I scheduled one day a week that I would work remotely from a local Coffee shop.
To this day, I’m known to collect a few free rewards as a frequent buyer and still know many of the shop employees and their regulars.
Some of whom are either friends or clients!

Remember there are millions of other freelancers in the world and we ALL have felt the same way you do at some point and time. Know that you are not the only lonely isolated freelancer – you are NOT alone.
There have been many recent WordCamp presentations addressing Mental Health and getting help, it is certainly not to be ignored.

Necessity - we need to eat...
Ideally we are supposed to eat
3 to 6 “meals” a day
Appropriate calorie level
Labels are based on 2000 calories per day
Adjust for you
Weight
Height
BMI
Drink enough water
64 oz. a day
1-2 cups 4-8 times a day - Story of back and forth to the bathroom. Benefits you in more than one way.
Get the needed water
Getting out from behind the desk and moving
My Story - For years and up until May 2017:
Skipping meals during the day
Eating out all the time
Overeating - Not paying attention to how much I ate, and how often.
Making poor nutritional choices - why does all the food that’s bad for you taste the best anyway?
Well… it landed me right into the Obese category - I weighed over 200+ pounds!
Since June 2017:
Eat at least 3 times a day
Calorie conscious decisions
Choices based on Nutritional value
Drinking water regularly
Losing weight…
Here’s What worked for me - Monitored Convenience Meals
Food delivered to my door! Home Chef, Hello Fresh, Sun Basket and Blue Apron
Fresh Restaurant quality food you prepare (30-60 minutes to table)
Portion Control
Try something you would not normally eat
Learn to cook - New hobby
Graze (healthy snacks),
Nutritional “shakes” and meal replacements
Herbalife, Juice Plus, store brand
Vitamins
Minerals
Protein
Fiber
Fiber One
Starbucks - just because all coders need coffee and designers like it too!
Take a moment and think about your typical workday. How many hours are you actually just sitting? Maybe it is 5 hours, maybe 18 (been there, done that!)
Here’s my point…
The Effects of prolonged sitting include:
Altered posture and alignment
Tight muscles
Weakness
Decreased cardiovascular health
Diabetes risk
Obesity risk
increase depression, anxiety and lower mental well-being
Altered digestion
Cancer risk
Overall mortality
Let me tell you a little about me and being sedentary - we’re going back to May 2017 and before:
Sitting all day in front of the computer,
only getting up to use the bathroom (which was not very often because I did not eat or drink anything while working).
Chronic neck pain
Bouts of vertigo
Aching body
Poor sleep
Muscle weakness and loss of strength
Feeling like I was physically incapable of changing my circumstances
Attributing many of my ailments to getting older...yes I am older than you probably think - lets just go with the fact that the first of 3 my boys was born in 1988 and I have a grandson who was born in 2011!
American Heart Association’s recommendation is 10,000 steps a day
How taking 10,000 steps a day can help
Reduces the risk of the #1 killer of men and women in America - heart disease
10,000 steps a day is the rough equivalent to getting 30 minutes of activity most days of the week or walking 3-5 miles a day
Other benefits
Lower BMI
Smaller waistline
Increased energy
Fewer health risks - heart disease and diabetes
What works for me -
Planning and scheduling Activity into my Routine -
Using Technology and Automating new Habits
Back in May 2017 and before, there was NO WAY I could walk 10,000 steps…
but I knew I might be able to manage 250… so I started there.
FitBit
The little red dot
Setting for reminders 5-14 hours a day
Getting to 250 steps (walking to the bathroom, etc.)
250 to 500
500 to 1000
Interfering with productivity – needed balance
Cheating the system
Walking at 8:50 – 9:10
More uninterrupted time
Walking in in place (during meetings and webinars)
Jogging in place while waiting for the handheld immersion blender to mix up my breakfast shake
“shaking my fist”
So… is it really cheating?
It’s a reminder is to get you moving… shaking my fist, no matter how you look at it is MOVING! That’s the whole point! So, no – it’s NOT cheating!
So that is my weekday routine to get 10,000.
Weekends go something like this.
My husband and I are avid Harley Bikers. We try to ride every weekend.
Love to ride NM
Love the traveling, learning, history
stop hourly
combine the hours to allow for longer riding… Monkey butt.
Going to destinations with things to do upon our arrival.
We are also Gnarly Hikers
Huge calorie burn
Great muscle building
Cardio workout
Spiritual connection
