How To Make Time To Start Your Business
1. How To Make Time To Start Your Business
Before you decide to make the leap from having a job to becoming a fully-fledged entrepreneur you
need to consider many things.
One of the most important things is TIME.
Managing your time is essential so that you do not get burnt out, and also to ensure that you are
always on the ball and become the go–to person in your chosen niche.
Think of how many amazing businesses are left on the shelf because they are not pursued. Dreams
are left to die because so many believe they do not have the time to follow them, and take action.
Over the coming months, I will be giving you information on how to make the leap with a step-by-
step plan, but today I part with five ideas you can action immediately to make more time for you and
your dreams, even if you still have a full-time job:
Say Goodbye To Social Media.
What did Peter Jones or Richard Branson have for breakfast today? The chances are you will not
find the answer to these questions as neither Richard or Peter share that kind of information on the
social media platforms.
There is nothing wrong with social media, but if you are thinking of starting a business then imagine
the time you could save getting off these platforms or at least scaling down your social media use.
One thing I teach in depth is creating not consuming information, especially online. So every time
you find yourself looking at other people’s escapades, think about how you can take a minute to
STOP looking, and start creating your dream business. Less time consuming and more time creating
will ensure you realise your dream.
Turn Off The TV
I have never watched Game Of Thrones, Downton Abbey, or The Walking Dead. Why? Because I
don’t need an escape from my current life. I spend my time more productively by working on my
2. business and building memories (TV is not memories) with the family. This is about creating a dream
life.
If you turned off the TV and spent that time planning and creating your dream business, you wouldn’t
need to escape your current life, as you would have the life of your dreams. Cut back on TV and
watch how much extra time you have to develop your business idea and turn it into a reality.
The employed watch an average of 6 hours TV a day. As a high achiever and someone who works
long hours, you may watch less than average. But think how much time you do waste watching the
square box in the corner of the room. Can you cut down your hours or eliminate TV completely?
Wake Up Earlier
How do you get more time? Spend more time awake is the simplest answer. Does your alarm go off
at 6:30 am and you press the snooze button so that you can have just 15 more minutes’ sleep? Do
you keep doing this until the last possible moment before you have to rush and get up and get ready
for work? Are you one of those who put their make-up on whilst on the train into the City as you slept
in longer?
Imagine if you stopped pressing snooze, set your alarm for 6 am and jumped out of bed and worked
on your business idea? You would be able to spend the equivalent of a full day a week working on
your business if you did this.
The worst thing you can do here is making excuses. Imagine if you said, “I’ll start my business when
I have more free time” every day to yourself for six months. You would waste 180 hours that could
have been dedicated to your business.
Use Your Downtime Wisely
I have a large following on LinkedIn and Twitter, and many new clients ask me how I managed to
achieve this. My answer is quite simply I use my downtime wisely. Whether I am travelling into
London for meetings, or waiting for the children on the school run, I am answering emails on the go,
and following and talking to people on social media. I do not just sit and stare out of the train
window, or catch up on sleep because I stayed up late watching rubbish TV.
And here is another tip - rather than leaving the office to grab lunch, pack a lunch and eat it at your
desk while you work on your business. Even just an extra 30 to 45 minutes per day is valuable time
3. invested in your business dream. Run through your typical day in your head and find downtime that
you can convert into a more productive and beneficial block of time.
Create A Time Map
If you don’t plan your day you will literally spend your life chasing your tail and feeling busy, yet
achieving very little. Creating a Timemap will enable you to plan your day, and achieve all you need
to achieve in half the time. I will talk you through creating a Time map in another video, but quite
simply it is a spreadsheet with all your activities mapped out for the week. It includes eating,
shopping, working and exercise. You can add hobbies and interests and family time. But most
importantly it will keep you on track and stop you from wasting your time.
As you can see it is very simple to create an extra 2 – 4 hours a day. If you are organized and cut
out time wasters, you are well on your way to making your business a reality.
