Turn Digital Reputation Threats into Offense Tactics - Daniel Lemin
How Do You Go From Freelancer To Entrepreneur
1. How Do You Go From Freelancer to
Entrepreneur?

Are you a Freelancer or an Entrepreneur?
Something happened to my marketing business this month, actually a seismic
shift towards growth happened to my marketing business, let me tell you about
it…
I met with a web designer who wanted to discuss outsourcing his client’s social
media through Kennedy PR & Marketing.
Whilst in the meeting it became clear that I could help him with so much more
than the social media, and that he needed a marketeer to supply marketing
consultancy for his clients.
We met in his offices in Westerham, Kent, little over 10 minutes drive from my
home in Surrey, and, after a period of time I found myself getting talked into
freelancing for him. Working through his company, working for his clients
but under his business name, as a part time freelancer to his business. This
is known by many as white labeling.
I was uneasy with this and, although I left with the guarantee of more work, my
gut told me something was wrong. I didn’t enjoy the meeting and was not
enthusiastic about this partnership.
Why was I not happy about this marketing partnership? Because it wasn’t a
marketing partnership, I would be going back into a situation where I would be
told what to do, and not be able to let my 20 years experience help his clients,
as my hands would be tied.
Don’t get me wrong, five years ago I would have been more than happy to be a
freelancer. I often worked with other companies freelancing for them, but for
the past year and a half I have shifted from this, and felt that this meeting was
just like the old days. It brought back memories of having my copywriting
checked and ripped to pieces, purely because of a difference of opinion and not
because of fault.
2. Remember these points if you are a freelancer:
• Freelancing is a great way to earn a wage, but that is all it will ever do,
earn a wage.
• Freelancing means you are not able to unleash your entrepreneurial
spirit and let your business grow as your ideas flow.
• Freelancing means you are not able to work the hours you want to work,
as you have to answer to more than just the customer, you also have to
answer to the middle man and do as they ask.
• Freelancing means everything you do will be scrutinised, and will more
often than not knock your confidence more than empower you. I know
because that is what happened to me when I was freelance
copywriting. I let one man tell me that he didn’t like my writing and I was
devastated. I rewrote a document so many times that in the end I just
admitted defeat. This was not at all empowering! In fact, the complete
opposite.
Take Action Now – Step Up and Stand Up
Just like when you decided to freelance rather than work as an employee, I
urge you now to take the next step and become a business owner. An
entrepreneur.
Step out from behind the businesses you have been freelancing for and be
proud of what you know, and what you offer customers. Have your own name,
your own products, your own method and your own IP.
If you have confidence in yourself, your business model and provide
value, you will see customers come flooding towards you.
By the way…
I turned down the freelancing job, I have worked with web designers and SEO
people before on a white label contract and I have felt trapped and limited.
Being a freelancer limits growth.
So where does this leave Kennedy PR & Marketing? Or more to the point,
where does this leave Amanda Kennedy?
This week saw the end of my freelancing, and truly confirmed I was a Global
Small Business with clients all over the world. Something I could be very
proud of and not feel as if I had to accept every job offered to me.
I feel empowered; there is nothing as powerful as saying no to a potential client.
Follow your gut instincts, as they are there for a reason. Follow your heart, your
passions and your dreams. Anybody can be a global small business… yes that
means you too…
Are you a freelancer, or a business owner (Entrepreneur)? Do you think
there is a difference?
